Se l’enunciatore non parla. Note sulla nozione ducrotiana di punto di vista.
2018
«Voice» and «Point of view» have been two of the most debated topics in some fields of linguistics and semiotics. Generally, DUCROT (1984) is considered like one of the first essays which introduced these concepts in the theoretical framework of the analysis of enunciation. As for the first one, the Author limits himself to suggest that it is connected with the notion of «discourse». In fact, by examining some topics of SPERBER & WILSON (1978), he seems to assimilate «voice» to «discourse». Indeed, you can read «j’ai substitué l’expression “faire entendre une voix” à leur expression “mentionner un discours”». As for the second concept, He seems to assimilate «point of view» to intuitive not…
Pierre Bourdieu’s Theory of Politics: An Interpretation
2018
Bourdieu’s theory of politics can be divided into three components: a general analysis of the social aspects of the political (le politique), a more specific analysis of politics (la politique), and his political practices. The author analyzes Bourdieu’s conception of social domination through topics such as political judgment and delegation and then his theory of the political field. In Bourdieu’s structuralist framework, the struggle for domination takes place between the dominant and the dominated. The second component restricts political action to a more specific social location, the political field. For Bourdieu, the division of society into social classes forms the explanatory basis f…
PELA-USAL: A Methodological Tool for the Study of Elites
2020
This introductory chapter presents the Parliamentary Elites of Latin America (PELA-USAL) project, which has conducted interviews with Latin American legislators in the lower chambers of political representation for more than 20 years. The following emphasizes the PELA-USAL project’s methodology, as well as its most important inputs and future challenges. Based on the experience of researchers from the project, our aim here is to re-think several issues (such as data mining) that arise during the research process, taking into account the wealth of available information (after two decades of development) and the particularities that parliamentary elites present as an object of study. First we…
Electoral Rules and Proportionality in Spain: Estimating the Impact of some Swedish Rules Through the 2011 Electoral Data
2016
In democratic countries policy making is always framed by many procedures and rules. Some of these rules are particularly critical for allowing more or less proportionality in legislative chambers, though the behavior of political actors also matter. The rules used for technically converting votes into political representatives often exercise such an important role in western countries. In this chapter we provide an estimation of the impact upon proportionality between seats and votes that might have resulted in the 2011 Spanish general elections if some Swedish electoral rules had been applied, ceteris paribus. As we are aware that electoral reforms favouring proportionality may hinder the…
The Secondary Reality of the Media
2018
In this chapter, the author explores the relationship between Bourdieu’s idea on communication and his political philosophy. Bourdieu’s approach to communications was dominated by a paradox: on the one hand, he held communication to be a key social activity; on the other hand, he reach as a scientist for a level of existence where reality is not so much communicated as it is imposed on us. The author focuses on two central questions: Bourdieu’s analysis of the social activities as sign activity and his analysis of political representation and its links to civil society on the one hand and the critique of representative democracy on the other hand.
Directly Elected Mayors vs. Council Appointed Mayors – Which Effects on Local Government Systems?
2016
This chapter compares the Italian and the Spanish case discussing the influence of having elected or appointed mayors on local government systems. Five elements of the local government systems are compared: the electoral system and its influences on the political composition of the local government; the local government structure and the distribution of functions and powers between Mayor and council; the role of political parties; scrutiny of executive and accountability; citizen participation. Our comparative analysis highlights that overall directly elected mayors have ensured better efficiency in terms of quicker and faster decision making processes, even if mostly at the expenses of dem…
Improving the prediction of air pollution peak episodes generated by urban transport networks
2016
Abstract This paper illustrates the early results of ongoing research developing novel methods to analyse and simulate the relationship between trasport-related air pollutant concentrations and easily accessible explanatory variables. The final scope is to integrate the new models in traditional traffic management support systems for a sustainable mobility of road vehicles in urban areas. This first stage concerns the relationship between the hourly mean concentration of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and explanatory factors reflecting the NO2 mean level one hour back, along with traffic and weather conditions. Particular attention is given to the prediction of pollution peaks, defined as exceedanc…
A method for determination of time- and temperature-dependences of stress threshold of linear-nonlinear viscoelastic transition: Energy-Based Approach
2011
A methodology for determination of time- and temperature-dependences of stress threshold of linear–nonlinear viscoelastic transition is proposed and validated by example of uniaxial creep of epoxy resin. Energy approach is applied for characterization of the region of linear viscoelasticity (LVE) and the threshold of LVE is given in the stress–strain representation as the master curve independent of time and temperature. Time- and temperature-dependences of the stress threshold are calculated by extending LVE theory and time–temperature superposition principles (TTSP) to the energy relations. Reasonable agreement between experimental data and calculations is obtained. It is shown that numbe…
