Influence of the passive film properties and residual stresses on the micro-electrochemical behavior of duplex stainless steels

2010

In the present paper, the chemical composition of passive films formed on both phases of two types of duplex stainless steels (UNS S31803 and UNS S32304) is determined at the micro-scale using Auger electron spectroscopy (AES). Samples were either mechanically polished (down to diamond pastes) or electrochemically etched in acidic solutions. The micro-electrochemical behavior of samples was then determined in sodium chloride media by means of the electrochemical micro-cell technique (capillary diameters of 30 μm). The results obtained were analyzed considering the passive film chemical composition. Quantitative relationships between electrochemical parameters and the distribution of chromiu…

Study of the mechanical effects on passivity breakdown by local probe techniques

2006

This paper aims at demonstrating that a relationship exists between surface stress and pitting corrosion. The surface stress field generated by polishing was first calculated using a thermo-mechanical model and a finite element code. Pitting corrosion tests performed at the microscale along the austenite/ferrite interface using the electrochemical microcell technique were then analyzed considering the microstructure and the residual surface stress field. Mechano-chemical criteria are proposed leading to an enhancement of pitting corrosion of duplex steels.

Simplified technique for constitutive analysis of SFRC

2014

Steel fibre reinforced concrete (SFRC) has become widespread material in areas such as underground shotcrete structures and industrial floors. However, due to the absence of material models of SFRC reliable for numerical analysis, application fields of this material are still limited. Due to interaction of concrete with fibres, a cracked section is able to carry a significant portion of tensile stresses, called the residual stresses. In present practices, residual stresses used for strength, deflection and crack width analysis are quantified by means of standard tests. However, interpretation of these test results is based on approximation using empirically deduced relationships, adequacy o…

Measurement of Mechanical Properties of Cantilever Shaped Materials

2008

Microcantilevers were first introduced as imaging probes in Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) due to their extremely high sensitivity in measuring surface forces. The versatility of these probes, however, allows the sensing and measurement of a host of mechanical properties of various materials. Sensor parameters such as resonance frequency, quality factor, amplitude of vibration and bending due to a differential stress can all be simultaneously determined for a cantilever. When measuring the mechanical properties of materials, identifying and discerning the most influential parameters responsible for the observed changes in the cantilever response are important. We will, therefore, discuss the…

Numerical modelling of fatigue crack initiation of martensitic steel

2010

Numerical simulation of micro-crack initiation that is based on Tanaka-Mura micro-crack nucleation model is presented. Three improvements were added to this model. Firstly, multiple slip bands where micro-cracks may occur are used in each grain. Second improvement deals with micro-crack coalescence by extending existing micro-cracks along grain boundaries and connecting them into a macro-crack. The third improvement handles segmented micro-crack generation, where a micro-crack is not nucleated in one step like in Tanaka-Mura model, but is instead generated in multiple steps. Numerical simulation of crack-initiation was performed with ABAQUS, using a plug-in that was written specially for ha…

Effect of the indentation process on fatigue life of drilled specimens

2015

Design and manufacture of mechanical elements are strongly influenced by the evaluation of the residual stresses due to their effects on the material strength. This paper presents numerical and experimental results performed on AW 6082-T6 aluminum alloy drilled specimens when the hole is created after a bilateral indentation process. The plastic deformation induced by the indenters creates a compressive residual stress field around the hole, which persists after the drilling operation. Several numerical analysis have been carried out in ANSYS APDL explicit solver for different indentation depths and hole diameters in order to evaluate the compressive circumferential stresses, optimal proces…

New methods for the determination of local residual stresses

2022

Splat solidification in thermal sprayed coatings relies on phenomena of various origins, time constants, and dimensional scales which altogether lead to complex residual stress states. As a result, in-service performance may be under or overestimated. Hence, this work aims at characterizing residual stress fields using high resolution instruments: a Raman spectrometer and a tailor-made Near-Field Scanning Microwave Microscope (NFSMM). Investigation areas are of 1 µm and 0.020 µm diameter respectively, both techniques are non-destructive and rely on electromagnetic interaction with matter.A preliminary study was conducted on sintered trigonal Cr2O3 with NFSMM as the technique is used for the…

Residual Stresses Induced by Cold Expansion of Adjacent and Cut-Out Holes

2012

Fatigue life of fastener holes can be enhanced via a cold-expansion process to introduce a compressive residual stress field around the hole edge and to reduce crack growth propagation. Considering that aerospace components contain multiple rows of holes, the present investigation focuses on the evaluation of the three-dimensional residual stress distribution in adjacent cold-expanded (CE) holes. The redistribution of residual stresses caused by a cut introduced between two adjacent holes was also investigated. Finite element (FE) analysis and experimental technique were used to assess the residual stress distribution in a 6082-T6 aluminum plate with two adjacent holes expanded sequentially…

Investigation of mechanically activated field-activated pressure-assisted synthesis processing parameters for producing dense nanostructured FeAl

2003

The parameters of the mechanically activated field-activated pressure-assisted synthesis (MAFAPAS) process, which were recently developed and patented for producing dense nanostructured materials, were studied in the case of the B2-FeAl intermetallic. Based on x-ray diffraction (XRD) experiments, residual stresses XRD analysis, relative density measurement, and secondary-electron microscopic observations, the optimal synthesis conditions (time, current intensity, and pressure) were studied. Fe + Al powders were comilled in a specially designed planetary mill to obtain a mixture of reactants at the nanoscale without the formation of any product. The milled mixtures were then subjected to a h…
