Direct and indirect exogenous contamination by pesticides of rice-farming soils in a Mediterranean wetland.

It is known that the sources of soil contamination can be endogenous or exogenous and that exogenous contamination may be direct or indirect. In this work, an environmental pesticide fate study was conducted in soil profiles collected from 23 rice field sites in an important Mediterranean wetland (Albufera Natural Park, Valencia, Spain) from April 1996 to November 1997. Temporal and spatial distribution of 44 pesticide residues in an alluvial Mediterranean soil (gleyic-calcaric Fluvisol, Fluvaquent) were monitored. Abstract Among the soil conservation practices that are used, mulching has been successfully applied to reduce soil and water losses in different contexts, such as agricultural lands, fire-affected areas, rangelands and anthropic sites. Determination at low ppm levels of dithiocarbamate residues in foodstuff by vapour phase-liquid phase microextraction-infrared spectroscopy

Abstract A methodology based on the vapour phase (VP) generation of carbon disulphide from non-volatile dithiocarbamate compounds has been developed for determination of pesticide residues in foodstuff at low ppm levels. Leaching of oryzalin and diuron through undisturbed vineyard soil columns under outdoor conditions

An assessment of the leaching of two such herbicides, diuron and oryzalin, was therefore performed using lysimeters, under outdoor conditions, from May 2001 to May 2002. Fusarium graminearum is a plant pathogenic fungus, causing devastating disease “Fusarium head blight” (FHB) in cereals including wheat and maize. It also contaminates the grains with mycotoxins including deoxynivalenol (DON) which are toxic to human and animals. This disease has resulted in the serious losses in grain yield and quality.
