Perineal Excision of a Large Angiomyxoma in a Young Woman Following Magnetic Resonance and Angiographic Imaging

Abstract Background. Aggressive angiomyxomas are rare, arise from connective tissue of the perineum or the lower pelvis, and affect predominantly young women. Case. We describe an unusual case of aggressive angiomyxoma in which the perineal approach was possible owing to MRI scanning and selective angiography indications. Conclusion. In cases of large aggressive angiomyxomas these diagnostic procedures should make it possible to decide which operative route might be best for the patient.

Preoperative assessment of breast cancer: sonography versus MR imaging.

The purposes of our study were to compare the diagnostic value of whole-breast sonography and MR imaging as adjunctive techniques to mammography and to determine whether MR imaging should be used routinely in the preoperative assessment of patients with suspected breast cancer.. One hundred four women (age range, 34-84 years; mean age, 60 years) with findings highly suggestive of malignancy in the breast were examined with mammography, sonography, and dynamic MR imaging before undergoing surgery. The purpose of our study was to assess the prevalence, characteristics, and clinical consequence of incidentally detected enhancing lesions on MRI of the breast. SUBJECTS AND METHODS. MRI of the breast (1.0-T scanner, dynamic gadolinium-enhanced T1-weighted three-dimensional gradient-echo sequence, double breast coil) was performed on 1273 women for different indications. Enhancing incidental lesions were defined as enhancing lesions on MRIs that were not expected from findings on the previous conventional imaging. We aimed to evaluate the safety and MRI efficacy of interferon beta-1b (IFNbeta-1b) 375 microg (subcutaneously [sc] every other day [eod]) in relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS) patients with a suboptimal response to IFNbeta-1b 250 microg, i.e., with MRI activity or relapses. Basilar Artery Occlusion and the Dense Artery Sign in the Newborn

A child with basilar artery occlusion in the neonatal period is reported. The occlusion was documented by unenhanced computed tomography performed in the neonatal period demonstrating a “dense” artery at the tip of the basilar artery. The pattern of cerebral damage on MRI scan at 10 years of age confirmed the site of the vascular occlusion. The evidence suggests that embolization was the operating pathogenic mechanism of cerebral vascular occlusion.
