Complying With the First Law of Robotics: An Analysis of the Occupational Risks Associated With Work Directed by an Algorithm/Artificial Intelligence

2020

It is increasingly common for companies to use artificial intelligence mechanisms, which may be more or less advanced, to manage work, that is, to establish work shifts and production times, design and allocate tasks for workers, recruit workers, evaluate performance and dismiss employees. Companies rely on technology to gather all the information available, process it and make the management decisions (productivity optimisation) that will benefit them the most. This replaces human supervisors and middle managers, as well as experts in human resources, leaving the management of workers in the hands of automated processes directed by algorithms – or in its most advanced stage, to be undertak…

1996

One of the most important topics in libraries management, specially nowadays when library budgets have been blocked or shortened, is to set up a suitable acquisitions policy. This article aims, from a particular experience, to supply some information that allow to fix such an acquisitions policy. It analyses the Valencia University Serials Catalog, taking into account its growth throughout time, changes in titles distribution by the publishing country, in libraries and collections, always relating the whole collection to the current one, to conclude with a view of the collection distribution in knowledge areas, taking into account the number of students.

The Challenge of Mutual Competence Building

2015

Mutual Competence Building has emerged as a key concept when working on this book with our colleagues at the University of Agder. In this conclusion we develop and explore the concept further in relation to sustainability. Our point of departure is the definition we presented in the introduction: mutual competence building is a conversation between scholars and societal and work life partner organisations about what sustainability, and efforts to create a sustainable society, might entail for distinct sectors.

IDENTIFYING THE TRAINING NEEDS AND THE KEY TRAINING TOPICS IN THE ENTERPRISES OF LATVIA

2019

The role of a workplace in the provision of lifelong learning processes is increasingly emphasised in the academic discourse. Since the early 21st century, a new term – “workplace pedagogy” (Billet, 2000) – has appeared, which signifies the increasingly important role of the workplace in the process of adult learning. The goal of this article is to discuss the key principles in determining the training needs and the key training topics in the enterprises of Latvia. The author of the article has carried out a qualitative study using a partially structured interview method. Four heads of human resource departments have been interviewed in four enterprises of Latvia with varied capital and wit…

Fostering Positive Changes in Health and Social Relationships in Children

2017

Several studies have demonstrated that altruism and gratitude may confer beneficial effects on psychophysical wellbeing. The present chapter describes how positive changes in health and social relationships can be fostered in 6- to 9-year-old children when participating in positive interventions. The findings show that the experience of working with others to attain shared goals and focusing on gratefulness positively modulated altruism and social interactions among peers, highlighting the great behavioural plasticity of children. Moreover, interventions involving cooperative playing not only increased positive relationships but also contributed to a decrease in chronic stress levels. The p…

Electrosynthesis and electrochemistry

2015

Since the pioneering work of Kolbe, electrochemistry and electrosynthetic methods have been a part of the repertoire of the organic synthesis toolbox [1–2]. In general, only electrons are employed as reagents or the reagents are electrochemically regenerated. Consequently, waste can be avoided, and limited resources can be used in a careful and economic manner. Because alternative reaction pathways are employed by electrosynthetic methods, scarce and toxic elements can be replaced or are not required at all [3]. Moreover, in the foreseeable future regenerative sources of electricity, for example, photovoltaics and wind power, will provide a surplus of electricity as the current unsteady sup…

Engraulis encrasicolus larvae from two different environmental spawning areas of the Central Mediterranean Sea: first data on amino acid profiles and…

2020

Early life stages of marine fish populations may be strongly affected by environmental factors. Changes in the physical environment or the availability of food resources could lead to stress-related physiological responses affecting larval fitness, growth and survival. In the present study, we determined, for the first time, amino acid composition (AAC), lipid, and carbohydrate content, as well as alkaline phosphatase and peroxidase activities in larvae from the European anchovy Engraulis encrasicolus. Fishes were caught in two different spawning areas of the Strait of Sicily, characterized by different environmental conditions, including a coastal upwelling with a lower temperature (Advent…
