Rewarding ageing employees—means used in the public sector

2005

Abstract Finland along with the rest of Europe will face considerable challenges in the next five to ten years due to changing age structures. The large number of ageing and aged employees, the baby-boomers, as well as the remarkably low birth rates that have occurred ever since the beginning of the 1980s, have led to a social phenomenon never experienced before. These changes should be considered when designing and implementing human resource strategies in organisations and institutions. This study considers the rewarding of ageing employees as a function of human resource management, and moreover rewarding is considered as an important function of age management. The purpose of this study…

Implications of the Marketing Strategy for Exporting MSEs from Developing Economies

2010

The paper further explores ways in which MSEs can adjust their marketing strategies to circumvent the challenges faced. Design/methodology/approach: It reviews both theoretical and empirical perspectives in export performance globally and with a special focus on studies done in developing economies. The literature synthesis is done in order to develop a conceptual model which will be used as guidance in future research. Findings: Previous studies have shown several types of marketing challenges which are faced by MSEs from developing economies. These a…

Safety valuation methods at urban atypical intersections. Analysis of infrastructural scenarios

2007

The definition of decision support tools for identifying ex ante evaluation issues for road safety measures is a new challenge for policymakers and designers managing road networks with the intention of improving traffic safety for roads of their competence. This is consistent with explicit strategies on sustainability in the transport sector established at European level, considering road safety as an essential prerequisite to warrant a sustainable mobility. Based on these considerations, the need for evaluation instruments of safety conditions both for existing infrastructural schemes and for new road installations is recently arisen so that the identification of risks involved in a parti…

ROAD project: Robotics for assisted diving

2014

The activities associated to underwater diving are of great importance in many areas. In the second half of the last century, diving technologies have greatly progressed, but diving is still characterized by significant risks, especially for professional divers who works at high depth, and limited practicability. The use of robotic systems and automatic procedures would allow, as in other situations where safety is of concern (for example, in case of hazardous works or in relation to hostile environments), a reliable monitoring and assessment of the physiological conditions of human operators during their activities. Moving from currently available technologies in underwater robotics, the R…

Entrepreneurs’ interpersonal communication competence in networking

2020

Modern international business calls for competencies that enable entrepreneurs to be creative, innovative, effective and capable of networking. Competencies in forming and developing networks are particularly valuable for organizations and companies in countries with small economies, such as Finland, that are dependent on export and profitable international business. The aim of this research is to build understanding of what kind of interpersonal communication competence (ICC) entrepreneurs need in networking.
Since the classic work of Granovetter (1982) and others (see e.g. Håkansson, 1982; Håkansson & Snehota, 2000), network theory and network analysis have become popular when t…

Energy reserves mobilization in the yellow eel as herbicide exposure effect.

2015

Abstract Thiobencarb and propanil are two of the most extensive used herbicides worldwide in rice cultivation. Especially scanty is the available information regarding the effect of herbicides on fish energy resources. In the present study, the effect of sublethal exposure to these herbicides on the energy reserves of juvenile eel Anguilla anguilla was compared. Eels were exposed to 72 h to the herbicide thiobencarb (0.22 mg L −1 ) or Propanil (0.63 mg L −1 ), and allowed to recover in clean water (144 h). Caloric content was determined in liver and skeletal muscle. Fish exposed to thiobencarb rapidly mobilized energy. Reserves from liver were depleted (21%) compared to control values (2.50…
