Elucidating the aryl hydrocarbon receptor antagonism from a chemical-structural perspective.

2020

The aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) plays an important role in several biological processes such as reproduction, immunity and homoeostasis. However, little is known on the chemical-structural and physicochemical features that influence the activity of AhR antagonistic modulators. In the present report, in vitro AhR antagonistic activity evaluations, based on a chemical-activated luciferase gene expression (AhR-CALUX) bioassay, and an extensive literature review were performed with the aim of constructing a structurally diverse database of contaminants and potentially toxic chemicals. Subsequently, QSAR models based on Linear Discriminant Analysis and Logistic Regression, as well as two tox…

Regulatory T Cells More Effectively Suppress Th1-Induced Airway Inflammation Compared with Th2

2011

Abstract Asthma is a syndrome with different inflammatory phenotypes. Animal models have shown that, after sensitization and allergen challenge, Th2 and Th1 cells contribute to the development of allergic airway disease. We have previously demonstrated that naturally occurring regulatory T cells (nTregs) can only marginally suppress Th2-induced airway inflammation and airway hyperresponsiveness. In this study, we investigated nTreg-mediated suppression of Th2-induced and Th1-induced acute allergic airway disease. We demonstrate in vivo that nTregs exert their suppressive potency via cAMP transfer on Th2- and Th1-induced airway disease. A comparison of both phenotypes revealed that, despite …

Segmentation and virtual exploration of tracheobronchial trees

2003

Abstract The tracheobronchial tree as part of the lung is part of one of the most important organs of the human body. Inhaled air is distributed to the alveolus where oxygen and carbon dioxide exchange between air and blood takes place. In this paper, we introduce the virtual endoscopy system VIVENDI to perform virtual inspections of tracheobronchial trees based on their segmentation and of the complementing blood vessels. It is based on a hybrid segmentation pipeline which enables the segmentation of vascular and tracheobronchial structures down to the seventh generation of the bronchi.

Physical Aspects of the Atmospheric Aerosol

1982

The atmospheric aerosol is a trace substance of the troposhere as well as the trace gases. Therefore a number of similiarities should be expected. As an example a common model on residence time is developed and discussed in its results. The residence time connects the content of a reservoir (size distribution for aerosols) with its source strength or removal rate. This is presented for the aerosol. In addition other physical properties of the tropospheric aerosol like optical, electrical and water uptake properties are discussed.

Strikingly High Respiratory Quotients: A Further Characteristic of the Tumor Pathophysiome

2008

Conspicuously high respiratory quotients (RQs) are found in solid tumors in vivo. RQs in the range between 1.29 and 1.95 neither reflect the degree of substrate oxidation by tumor cells nor indicate the types of fuels involved in metabolic processes. Instead, such tumor RQs most probably are caused by (a) channeling of glycolytic end-products into lipogenesis, and by (b) CO2 release from the tumor following extracellular buffering of H+ -inos by bicarbonate. H+ -inos exported from the intracellular space into the interstitial compartment titrate extracellular bicarbonate to CO2 and H2O with the aid of the ectoenzyme carbonic anhydrase IX, which is activated at low pH. Strikingly high (RQs) …

Evidence of intimal tear in type A intramural hematoma of the aorta: A case series

2017

Highlights • We report two cases of type A intramural hematoma of the aorta. • We found radiological and intraoperative evidence of an intimal tear. • This finding supports the hypotesis that IMH belong to “aortic dissection” disease.

Prostacyclin inhibits adhesion of polymorphonuclear leukocytes to human vascular endothelial cells due to adhesion molecule independent regulatory me…

2002

Prostacyclin is an important endothelial mediator involved in the interaction of neutrophils (PMN) with the vessel wall. Many studies have shown the beneficial effects of prostacyclin in ischemia and reperfusion. However, no previous study has investigated the direct effects of the prostacyclin analogs iloprost (ILO) and alprostadil (PGE(1)) on the endothelial part of the adhesion process. Human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) were grown to confluence, stimulated with 300 U/ml TNF-alpha and treated with increasing concentrations of ILO and PGE(1). The cells were washed to remove TNF and the inhibitors and adhesion of fluorescence-green labeled PMN was determined microscopically. I…
