Late Breaking Abstract - Efficacy of CSJ117 on allergen-induced asthmatic responses in mild atopic asthma patients

2020

Introduction: CSJ117 is a potent neutralizing antibody fragment against human Thymic stromal lymphopoietin (TSLP), formulated as a PulmoSol™ engineered powder in hard capsules for delivery to the lungs via dry powder inhaler. Methods: In this double-blind, placebo-controlled study, 28 mild, atopic asthmatics meeting elibility criteria were randomized to receive 4mg CSJ117 (n = 15) or placebo (n = 13) inhaled daily for 12 weeks. Allergen inhalation challenge (AIC) was conducted at screening, day 42 and day 84. The primary efficacy variable was the late asthmatic response (LAR), measured 3 to 7 hours after AIC at day 84. Other outcomes included the early asthmatic response (EAR) measured with…

Ultrasound observation of tissue fluid infiltration causing stridor in a woman undergoing shoulder arthroscopy

2012

Respiratory stridor developed rapidly during an interscalene brachial plexus block for shoulder arthroscopy in an obese woman. Extensive cervicothoracic edema due to tissue diffusion of the arthroscopic fluid was suspected. The outcome of patient after conservative management was satisfactory. We give a brief review of how this complication develops, the ultrasound findings, and briefly discuss similar cases.

Differentialdiagnose Berylliose/Sarkoidose bei einem Zahntechniker

2008

History and clinical findings Sarcoidosis was diagnosed in a dental technician when he was aged 21 years. Two years later prednisolone treatment was started and continued for 14 years because of nonproductive cough with progressive reduction in vital capacity and CO transfer capacity. Subsequently the risk of exposure to beryllium-containing dust in dental laboratories became known. In his case exposure had started before sarcoidosis had been diagnosed and had continued for 16 years. Changes typical of sarcoidosis (unproductive cough and dyspnoea; bihilar lymphadenopathy and reticulonodular marking in the chest radiogram) were now present, at the age of 40 years. Investigations Vital and di…

Infectious complications associated with short-term mechanical circulatory support in urgent heart transplant candidates

2021

[Abstract] Introduction and objectives. Short-term mechanical circulatory support is frequently used as a bridge to heart transplant in Spain. The epidemiology and prognostic impact of infectious complications in these patients are unknown. Methods. Systematic description of the epidemiology of infectious complications and analysis of their prognostic impact in a multicenter, retrospective registry of patients treated with short-term mechanical devices as a bridge to urgent heart transplant from 2010 to 2015 in 16 Spanish hospitals. Results. We studied 249 patients, of which 87 (34.9%) had a total of 102 infections. The most frequent site was the respiratory tract (n = 47; 46.1%). Microbiol…

Lung Injury Is a Predictor of Cerebral Hypoxia and Mortality in Traumatic Brain Injury

2020

Background: A major contributor to unfavorable outcome after traumatic brain injury (TBI) is secondary brain injury. Low brain tissue oxygen tension (PbtO2) has shown to be an independent predictor of unfavorable outcome. Although PbtO2 provides clinicians with an understanding of the ischemic and non-ischemic derangements of brain physiology, its value does not take into consideration systemic oxygenation that can influence patients' outcomes. This study analyses brain and systemic oxygenation and a number of related indices in TBI patients: PbtO2, partial arterial oxygenation pressure (PaO2), PbtO2/PaO2, ratio of PbtO2 to fraction of inspired oxygen (FiO2), and PaO2/FiO2. The primary aim …

What Is the Impact of Innovative Electronic Health Interventions in Improving Treatment Adherence in Asthma? The Pediatric Perspective

2019

Suboptimal adherence to treatment is a significant issue in the management of pediatric asthma and is a major cause of uncontrolled disease, life-threatening attacks, and increased utilization of healthcare resources. Electronic health (e-Health) solutions have the potential to positively impact asthma self-management in children and adolescents and their families, thereby improving treatment adherence and asthma outcomes. However, there is a lack of sufficient data to support widespread adoption of e-Health tools in pediatric asthma practice. A critical evaluation of the impact of these new interventions on treatment adherence in childhood asthma must consider unmet needs, heterogeneity of…

Der Einsatz der Tumorprothese bei sekundär-neoplastischer Destruktion des proximalen Femurendes

2008

Total hip arthroplasty was performed with PMMA-augmented tumor prostheses in 42 individuals suffering from metastatic destruction of the proximal end of the femur at the Orthopedic University Hospital Mainz from 1980 to 1992. Neoplastic lesions had been triggered by carcinomas of the breast in 25 female patients. 24 of our patients presented with pathologic fractures. In all patients capable of walking preoperatively early mobilization could be attained by total hip arthroplasty. Pain relief was achieved in each patient. Resection of the major trochanter and, partially, of the pelvitrochanteric muscle sleeve entailed luxation of the prosthesis six times in 5 individuals during the first pos…

Potential Diagnostic Properties of Chest Ultrasound in Thoracic Tuberculosis-A Systematic Review.

2018

Background: Chest ultrasound (CUS) has been shown to be a sensitive and specific imaging modality for pneumothorax, pneumonia, and pleural effusions. However, the role of chest ultrasound in the diagnosis of thoracic tuberculosis (TB) is uncertain. We performed a systematic search in the medical literature to better define the potential role and value of chest ultrasound in diagnosing thoracic tuberculosis. Aim: To describe existing literature with regard to the diagnostic value of chest ultrasound in thoracic tuberculosis. Methods: MEDLINE, EMBASE, and Scopus databases were searched for relevant articles. We included studies that used chest ultrasound for the diagnosis or management of any…

Development and Validation of Patient-Reported Outcome Measures (PROM) and Patient-Reported Experience Measures (PREM) in Home Respiratory Therapies:…

2021

Introduction: Home respiratory therapies (HRT) are treatments aimed at diseases that are generally chronic and that have a significant impact on the biopsychosocial aspects of patients’ lives. No validated patient-reported outcome measures (PROM) and patient-reported experience measures (PREM) are available to assess the impact of these treatments on quality of life (QoL) in HRT. The objective of this work was to identify and validate PROMs and PREMs in HRT. Methods: The process was divided into 5 stages: review of the literature, patient interviews, qualitative validation workshops, cognitive validation, and psychometric validation. For the identification of PROM and PREM, consensus techni…
