The success of crayfish stocking in a dredged river with and without artificial shelter increase

Abstract The success of crayfish ( Astacus astacus L.) stocking in a heavily dredged river in Finland was compared between sections with and without artificial shelter. The materials used for creating shelter were a) broken rock and, b) ceramic drain pipes and perforated bricks. Group-marked crayfish (mean carapace length 42.6 mm) were released into the sections and test trappings conducted one year later. The highest crayfish densities were found in the broken rock sections. The reasons for the observed crayfish densities are discussed. No significant differences in growth between groups were detected. Migrations in the range of 2.5 km in one year were recorded.

This clinical report describes a biologically oriented preparation technique (BOPT) for teeth and an implant for the esthetic rehabilitation of the maxillary anterior sector. The technique was designed to create an anatomic crown with a prosthetic emergence profile that simulated the shape of the natural tooth.

The contribution of forest restoration to the conservation of woody endangered species in Sicily

Sicilian forest ecosystems are, in general, numerically poor in terms of their floristic composition. As many studies on Sicilian dendroflora have highlighted, such poorness is not intrinsic to forest formations, but it is due to the millenary human pressures. Repeated passage of fire, continuous wood usage and reforestations by single or few species dra- matically reduced the plant biodiversity of Sicilian forest ecosystems, often suffering of monodominance. Past and Contemporary Changes in Forest Cover and Forest Continuity in Relation to Soils (Southern Latvia)

A set of medium-scale historical maps was used to reconstruct changes in spatial patterns of forest area during the last 220 years in an agricultural matrix of northeastern Europe (Zemgale region, Latvia). Changes in total forest area by soils were determined, as well as the time period of continuous forest cover. Proportion of protected area for each soil trophic group was also calculated. Patterns of recent forest development differed between soil trophic groups. Afforestation occurred mainly on wet and poor soils in the 19th and 20th centuries, while the proportion of woodland area on fertile soils typical for nemoral forests was fairly stable. Effect of commercial mineral-based additives on composting and compost quality.

Abstract The effectiveness of two commercial additives meant to improve the composting process was studied in a laboratory-scale experiment. Improver A (sulphates and oxides of iron, magnesium, manganese, and zinc mixed with clay) and B (mixture of calcium hydroxide, peroxide, and oxide) were added to source-separated biowaste:peat mixture (1:1, v/v) in proportions recommended by the producers. A New Look at the Stochastic Linearization Technique for Hyperbolic Tangent Oscillator

Abstract Stochastic linearization technique is reconsidered for oscillator with restoring force in form of hyperbolic tangent. We show that a subtle error was made in the previously known procedure for derivation of the linearized system parameters. Two new error-free procedures, namely, those based on minimization of mean square difference between (a) restoring force or (b) potential energy of the original non-linear system and their linear counterparts, are suggested. The results of numerical analysis are shown.

Recolonization after habitat restoration leads to decreased genetic variation in populations of a terrestrial orchid.

Colonization is crucial to habitat restoration projects that rely on the spontaneous regeneration of the original vegetation. However, as a previously declining plant species spreads again, the likelihood of founder effects increases through recurrent population founding and associated serial bottlenecks.
