About adapting Conrad's prose to film

On the example of Apocalypse Now by F. F. Coppola, Heart of Darkness by N. Roeg, The Duellists by R. Scott, The Shadow Line by A. Wajda, and Secret Sharer by P. Fudakowski, I would like to show that Joseph Conrad’s prose is a cinematic trap for film directors. This being so, I attempt to answer the question as to why it is so difficult to make a film of something that is so cinematic, when it is being read, and why film adaptations that closely follow Conrad’s narratives are less Conradian than films which are “merely” inspired by Conrad’s works.

Prangos ferulacea (L.) Lindl, which belongs to the Apiaceae family, is a species that mainly grows in the eastern Mediterranean region and in western Asia. It has been largely used in traditional medicine in several countries and it has been shown to possess several interesting biological properties. With the aim to provide new insights into the phytochemistry and pharmacology of this species, the essential oils of flowers and leaves from a local accession that grows in Sicily (Italy) and has not yet been previously studied were investigated. The Greenland shark Somniosus microcephalus—Hemoglobins and ligand-binding properties

A large amount of data is currently available on the adaptive mechanisms of polar bony fish hemoglobins, but structural information on those of cartilaginous species is scarce. This study presents the first characterisation of the hemoglobin system of one of the longest-living vertebrate species (392 +/- 120 years), the Arctic shark Somniosus microcephalus. Three major hemoglobins are found in its red blood cells and are made of two copies of the same a globin combined with two copies of three very similar beta subunits. The three hemoglobins show very similar oxygenation and carbonylation properties, which are unaffected by urea, a very important compound in marine elasmobranch physiology.…
Color Sensitive Response of Graphene/Graphene Quantum Dot Phototransistors

We present the fabrication and characterization of all-carbon phototransistors made of graphene three terminal devices, coated with atomically precise graphene quantum dots (GQD). Chemically synthesized GQDs are the light absorbing materials, while the underlying chemical vapor deposition (CVD)-grown graphene layer acts as the charge transporting channel. We investigated three types of GQDs with different sizes and edge structures, having distinct and characteristic optical absorption in the UV–vis range. El presente trabajo constituye un acercamiento, desde una perspectiva histórica, al nacimiento del concepto de imputabilidad subjetiva en la doctrina penal alemana. Antes de acometer la tarea propuesta conviene realizar algunas precisiones, referentes, de una parte, a la terminología empleada y a la delimitación de la materia que va a ser objeto de estudio, y, de otra, encaminadas a establecer el ámbito temporal al que se extiende la investigación.

A partir de las circunstancias históricas de las Cortes de Cádiz y de los precedentes de la monarquía española, el artículo analiza la posición de la Jefatura del Estado monárquica en la Constitución de 1812 caracterizada como una «Monarquía moderada» basada en los principios estructurales de soberanía nacional y división de poderes que determinan la configuración del Rey como poder constituido en la nueva forma de gobierno. Two novel Fe<sup>II</sup>-Re<sup>IV</sup> compounds of general formula [Fe<sup>II</sup>(DEA)<inf>6</inf>][Re<sup>IV</sup>X<inf>6</inf>] where DEA = diethylacetamide and X = Cl (1) and Br (2) have been prepared and magnetostructurally characterised. Complexes 1 and 2 are isomorphic ionic salts that crystallise in the trigonal crystal system with space group R(-3). The rhenium(IV) ion in 1 and 2 is six-coordinate with six chloro (1) or bromo (2) ligands building a regular octahedral chromophore.
