Indexing Multimedia Learning Materials in Ultimate Course Search

2016

International audience; Multimedia is the main support for online learning materials and the size of multimedia learning materials is growing with the popularity of online programs offered by Universities. Ultimate Course Search (UCS) is a tool that aims to provide efficient search of course materials. UCS integrates slides, lecture videos and textbook content into a single platform with search capabilities. The keywords extracted from the textbook index and the power-point slides are the basis of the indexing scheme. The slides are indexed on the keywords and the videos are indexed on the slides. The correspondence between the slides and video segments is established using the meta-data pr…

Dynamic routing-and-inventory problems: a review

1998

The paper presents a review of the available literature on a class of problems denoted as dynamic routing-and-inventory (DRAI) problems. They are characterized by the simultaneous relevance of routing and of inventory issues in a dynamic environment, within the framework of distribution logistics. A classification scheme is first proposed for these problems. Then the results obtained in this area are summarized. Finally, the papers available in the literature are clustered and discussed according to the proposed scheme.

Using knowledge of human-generated code to bias the search in program synthesis with grammatical evolution

2021

Recent studies show that program synthesis with GE produces code that has different structure compared to human-generated code, e.g., loops and conditions are hardly used. In this article, we extract knowledge from human-generated code to guide evolutionary search. We use a large code-corpus that was mined from the open software repository service GitHub and measure software metrics and properties describing the code-base. We use this knowledge to guide the search by incorporating a new selection scheme. Our new selection scheme favors programs that are structurally similar to the programs in the GitHub code-base. We find noticeable evidence that software metrics can help in guiding evoluti…

Extension and Tuning of Virtual Synchronous Machine to Avoid Oscillatory Instability in Isolated Power Networks

2020

The risk of oscillatory instability introduced by virtual synchronous machines (VSM) control in isolated power networks is investigated. The considered control is a common scheme widely studied in literature, in several configurations and for different case studies. The impact of the VSM control on the system stability is examined for the existing power network of a Mediterranean island. The VSM control is implemented within the power converters interfacing the energy storage systems (ESS) installed in the network. Simulations and analysis show the occurrence of oscillatory instability in the system, with the ESS-VSM and the synchronous machines of the network progressively swinging against…

A hybrid multi-objective optimization algorithm for content based image retrieval

2013

Abstract Relevance feedback methods in CBIR (Content Based Image Retrieval) iteratively use relevance information from the user to search the space for other relevant samples. As several regions of interest may be scattered through the space, an effective search algorithm should balance the exploration of the space to find new potential regions of interest and the exploitation of areas around samples which are known relevant. However, many algorithms concentrate the search on areas which are close to the images that the user has marked as relevant, according to a distance function in the (possibly deformed) multidimensional feature space. This maximizes the number of relevant images retriev…

A neural multi-agent based system for smart html pages retrieval

2003

A neural based multi-agent system for smart HTML page retrieval is presented. The system is based on the EalphaNet architecture, a neural network capable of learning the activation function of its hidden units and having good generalization capabilities. System goal is to retrieve documents satisfying a query and dealing with a specific topic. The system has been developed using the basic features supplied by the Jade platform for agent creation, coordination and control. The system is composed of four agents: the trainer agent, the neural classifier mobile agent, the interface agent, and the librarian agent. The sub-symbolic knowledge of the neural classifier mobile agent is automatically …

Complex dynamics of our economic life on different scales: insights from search engine query data.

2010

Search engine query data deliver insight into the behaviour of individuals who are the smallest possible scale of our economic life. Individuals are submitting several hundred million search engine queries around the world each day. We study weekly search volume data for various search terms from 2004 to 2010 that are offered by the search engine Google for scientific use, providing information about our economic life on an aggregated collective level. We ask the question whether there is a link between search volume data and financial market fluctuations on a weekly time scale. Both collective ‘swarm intelligence’ of Internet users and the group of financial market participants can be rega…

Digital recording as a teaching and learning method in the skills laboratory.

2017

Aim and objectives To obtain information on how nursing students react to, think about and learn from digital recording as a learning and teaching method over time. Background Based on the teaching and learning philosophy of the university college, we used digital recording as a tool in our daily sessions in skills laboratory. However, most of the studies referred to in the background review had a duration of from only a few hours to a number of days. We found it valuable to design a study with a duration of two academic semesters. Design A descriptive and interpretative design was used. Method First-year bachelor-level students at the department of nursing participated in the study. Data c…

Studying the feasibility of a recommender in a citizen web portal based on user modeling and clustering algorithms

2006

This paper presents a methodology to estimate the future success of a collaborative recommender in a citizen web portal. This methodology consists of four stages, three of them are developed in this study. First of all, a user model, which takes into account some usual characteristics of web data, is developed to produce artificial data sets. These data sets are used to carry out a clustering algorithm comparison in the second stage of our approach. This comparison provides information about the suitability of each algorithm in different scenarios. The benchmarked clustering algorithms are the ones that are most commonly used in the literature: c-Means, Fuzzy c-Means, a set of hierarchical …
