Natural induction: An objective bayesian approach

2009

The statistical analysis of a sample taken from a finite population is a classic problem for which no generally accepted objective Bayesian results seem to exist. Bayesian solutions to this problem may be very sensitive to the choice of the prior, and there is no consensus as to the appropriate prior to use.

EEG correlates of learning in classical eyeblink conditioning in humans

2010

Ihmisten välillä on suurta vaihtelua oppimissuorituksessa klassisen ehdollistumisen tehtävissä laboratoriokokeissa. Erot kognitiivisissa kyvyissä voivat selittää osan vaihtelusta, mutta luultavampaa kuitenkin on että vaihtelu ihmisen sisäisessä vireystilassa aiheuttaa hajontaa oppimiskyvyssä. Tutkimuksessamme opetimme ihmisiä silmäniskuehdollistamisessa ja mittasimme ihmisten spontaania jatkuvaa aivosähkökäyrää silmät auki/kiinni –tilanteissa opettamisjaksojen välissä. Tarkkailimme erityisesti theta- (3 – 8 Hz) ja alfa- (9 – 13 Hz) taajuuksia nähdäksemme, selittääkö toinen näistä ihmisten välisiä suorituseroja. Theta-aktiivisuus liitetään usein oppimis- ja tiedonkäsittelyprosesseihin sinäns…

Body Weight, Physical Activity, and Risk of Cancer in Lynch Syndrome

2021

Simple Summary Lifestyle modifies cancer risk in the general public. How lifestyle modifies cancer risk in individuals carrying the inherited pathogenic gene variants in DNA mismatch repair genes (Lynch syndrome) remains understudied. We conducted a retrospective study with cancer register data to investigate associations between body weight, physical activity, and cancer risk among Finnish Lynch syndrome carriers (n = 465, 54% women). The results of our study indicated that longitudinal weight gain increases cancer risk, whereas being highly physically active during adulthood could decrease cancer risk in men. Further, women were observed to be less prone to lifestyle-related risk factors …

Type II keratin cDNAs from the rainbow trout: implications for keratin evolution.

2002

From a teleost fish, the rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss, we have cloned and sequenced cDNAs encoding five different type II keratins. The corresponding protein spots, as separated by 2D-PAGE of trout cytoskeletal preparations, have been identified by peptide mass mapping using MALDI mass spectrometry. Three of the sequenced keratins are expressed in the epidermis (subtype IIe), and two in simple epithelia and mesenchymal cells (subtype IIs). The IIs keratins are both orthologs of human K8. This leaves unsequenced only the trace component S3 of the biochemically established trout keratin catalog. A phylogenetic tree has been constructed from a multiple alignment of the rod domains of the …

Item Response Trees: a recommended method for analyzing categorical data in behavioral studies

2015

Behavioral data are notable for presenting challenges to their statistical analysis, often due to the difficulties in measuring behavior on a quantitative scale. Instead, a range of qualitative alternative responses is recorded. These can often be understood as the outcome of a sequence of binary decisions. For example, faced by a predator, an individual may decide to flee or stay. If it stays, it may decide to freeze or display a threat and if it displays a threat, it may choose from several alternative forms of display. Here we argue that instead of being analyzed using traditional nonparametric statistics or a series of separate analyses split by response categories, this kind of data ca…

Tutkimus digiohjauksen pulssilla : havaintoja etävälitteisestä ryhmätyönohjauksesta

2022
