Surgical complications after endoscopic transsphenoidal pituitary surgery.
2009
Between January 2004 and June 2007 we conducted a retrospective analysis to assess post-operative complications related to endoscopic pituitary surgery in a series of 150 patients. Patients were treated with an endoscopic endonasal transsphenoidal approach to the sellar region for removal of pathological sellar and suprasellar lesions. We analysed the complications in groups according to the anatomical structures of the approach and the functional systems of the pituitary gland (anterior and posterior endocrine systems), and compared them to a large historical series using the traditional microsurgical transsphenoidal approach. Overall, we observed a decreased incidence of complications wit…
Alteration of Smell and Taste in Asymptomatic and Symptomatic COVID-19 Patients in Sicily, Italy
2020
Objectives: Alteration of smell and taste has been reported in patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). The incidence and clinical-symptomatic manifestation of COVID-19 is different between northern and southern Italy. This study aims to evaluate the onset of alteration of smell and taste in asymptomatic and symptomatic patients in Sicily (extreme south of Italy). Methods: This prospective cross-sectional study was performed on asymptomatic and symptomatic COVID-19 patients tested for severe acute respiratory syndrome-coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) from May 1 to May 15, 2020. A questionnaire was used for evaluating the prevalence of smell and taste disorders in COVID-19 patients befor…
Use of Bichat's buccal fat pad for the sealing of orosinusal communications. A presentation of 8 cases.
2011
Objectives: To determine the efficacy of the pediculate flap with the buccal fat pad in the sealing of orosinusal communications, describe the surgical technique used, and report the main complications. Patients and method: A retrospective study was made of 8 patients seen in the Service of Oral Surgery of the University of Barcelona Dental Clinic (Spain) for the treatment of orosinusal communications between the years 2007 and 2009. In all cases a pediculate flap with the buccal fat pad was used to solve the problem. Results: All of the orosinusal communications were successfully resolved with this technique. The immediate postoperative complications were pain (37.5%), inflammation (37.5%)…
A case of meningitis due to Achromobacter xylosoxidans denitrificans 60 years after a cranial trauma
2011
Import JabRef | WosArea Research and Experimental Medicine; International audience; Background: Achromobacter xylosoxidans (AX) is a non-fermentative aerobic Gram-negative bacillus. It is an opportunistic pathogen and the causative agent of various infections. We report an original case of late posttraumatic meningitis due to AX denitrificans. Case Report: An 83-year-old man was hospitalized for acute headache, nausea and vomiting. The emergency brain computer tomography (CT) scan did not reveal any anomaly. In his medical history, there was an auditory injury due to a cranial trauma incurred in a skiing accident 60 years earlier. Cytobiochemical analysis of the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) re…
Randomized placebo-controlled trial comparing fluticasone aqueous nasal spray in mono-therapy, fluticasone plus cetirizine, fluticasone plus monteluk…
2004
BACKGROUND: Corticosteroids are considered to be particularly effective in reducing nasal congestion and are therefore recommended as first-line treatment in allergic rhinitis patients with moderate to severe and/or persistent symptoms. OBJECTIVE: We compared the clinical efficacy of fluticasone propionate aqueous nasal spray (FPANS) 200 microg given once daily, administered in mono-therapy or combined therapy with a H1 receptor antagonist (cetirizine, CTZ) or with a leukotriene antagonist (montelukast, MSK), and the combined therapy of CTZ plus MSK in the treatment of patients affected by allergic rhinitis to Parietaria during natural pollen exposure. In addition, we examined the effect of…
Comparison of the effects of fluticasone propionate, aqueous nasal spray and levocabastine on inflammatory cells in nasal lavage and clinical activit…
1999
BACKGROUND Treatment options for allergic rhinitis include antihistamines, decongestants, anticholinergics, cromolyn sodium and corticosteroids. As the nose is a small organ, comprising less than 1% of total body mass and surface area, it seems logical to confine treatment of rhinitis to the diseased organ. OBJECTIVE To evaluate the effects of therapy with intranasal fluticasone propionate (FP), both on subjective symptoms and pathophysiological mechanisms, in rhinitis patients during pollen season when the patients were symptomatic. METHODS We used a double-blind, placebo (PLA)-controlled, randomized, double dummy, parallel group study of the effect of 6 weeks treatment. The double-blind c…
Temporobasal, Transsphenoidal Meningoencephalocele Becoming Symptomatic with Spontaneous Cerebrospinal Fluid Rhinorrhea: Diagnostic Work-up and Micro…
2012
Background We report the rare case of an adult transsphenoidal meningoencephalocele and outline the microneurosurgical strategy. Clinical history, the findings of computerized tomography (CT) scans and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), the microsurgical procedure, and histopathology are reported. Case Report A 54-year-old female patient complained about cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) rhinorrhea; a transnasal biopsy of a mass in the maxillar sinus prior to diagnostic work-up was performed elsewhere. Persisting CSF leakage prompted CT and MRI, which showed brain tissue extending from the left middle cranial fossa into the left sphenoid sinus through several bony defects. The diagnosis of a trans…
Effect of nebulized beclomethasone on airway inflammation and clinical status of children with allergic asthma and rhinitis: a randomized, double-bli…
2012
We aimed to evaluate the therapeutic effect of nebulized beclomethasone dipropionate (nBDP) on both allergic asthma and rhinitis. In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study, 40 children (mean age 10.7 ± 2.1 years) with allergic asthma and rhinitis received either nBDP (daily dose of 800 µg, administered twice daily) or placebo for 4 weeks (with a face mask), after a 2-week run-in period of clinical assessment. Nasal and oral fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO) measurements together with pulmonary function tests, nasal and oral exhaled breath condensate (EBC) collection for pH and interleukin-5 (IL-5) measurements as well as nasal and bronchial symptom scores were obtained at…
Parietal subdural empyema as complication of acute odontogenic sinusitis: a case report
2014
Introduction: To date intracranial complication caused by tooth extractions are extremely rare. In particular parietal subdural empyema of odontogenic origin has not been described. A literature review is presented here to emphasize the extreme rarity of this clinical entity. Case presentation: An 18-year-old Caucasian man with a history of dental extraction developed dysarthria, lethargy, purulent rhinorrhea, and fever. A computed tomography scan demonstrated extensive sinusitis involving maxillary sinus, anterior ethmoid and frontal sinus on the left side and a subdural fluid collection in the temporal-parietal site on the same side. He underwent vancomycin, metronidazole and meropenem th…
Spontaneous cerebrospinal fluid rhinorrhea: A clinical and anatomical study
2010
Objectives/Hypothesis: Spontaneous nasal cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) fistula represents a rare clinical entity. The possible etiology and the localization of the rhinorrhea remain an ongoing clinical challenge. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the localization of spontaneous CSF fistula and to correlate it with anatomical studies. Study Design: Retrospective clinical study, prospective anatomical study. Methods: Twenty-nine patients with spontaneous CSF rhinorrhea were retrospectively studied, 10 males and 19 females. Ages ranged from 10 to 92 years (mean, 50 years). In addition, 48 human skulls from newborns to adults were examined for the postnatal development of the anterior and m…
