Composition, industrial processing and applications of rice bran γ-oryzanol

2009

Abstract Rice bran oil (RBO) (20–25 wt% in rice bran) is a unique rich source of commercially-important bioactive phytochemicals, most of them of interest in nutrition, pharmacy and cosmetics. The unsaponifiable constituents of RBO include mainly tocols (vitamin E, 0.10–0.14%) and γ-oryzanol (esters of trans- ferulic acid with sterols and triterpenic alcohols, 0.9–2.9%). The following topics concerning γ-oryzanol are reviewed: analytical methods for characterisation and determination; influence of genetic and environmental factors on the composition of rice bran; extraction approaches, including supercritical CO 2 and subcritical water; and biomedical and industrial applications, including …

A branch-and-price framework for decomposing graphs into relaxed cliques

2021

We study the family of problems of partitioning and covering a graph into/with a minimum number of relaxed cliques. Relaxed cliques are subsets of vertices of a graph for which a clique-defining property—for example, the degree of the vertices, the distance between the vertices, the density of the edges, or the connectivity between the vertices—is relaxed. These graph partitioning and covering problems have important applications in many areas such as social network analysis, biology, and disease-spread prevention. We propose a unified framework based on branch-and-price techniques to compute optimal decompositions. For this purpose, new, effective pricing algorithms are developed, and new…

The behaviour of non consumer of organic food: suggestions on marketing strategies to attract new market segments

2013

Determination of particle number and brightness using a laser scanning confocal microscope operating in the analog mode

2008

We describe a method to obtain the brightness and number of molecules at each pixel of an image stack obtained with a laser scanning microscope. The method is based on intensity fluctuations due to the diffusion of molecules in a pixel. For a detector operating in the analog mode, the variance must be proportional to the intensity. Once this constant has been calibrated, we use the ratio between the variance and the intensity to derive the particle brightness. Then, from the ratio of the intensity to the brightness we obtain the average number of particles in the pixel. We show that the method works with molecules in solution and that the results are comparable to those obtained with fluctu…

Coverage, efficacy or dosing interval: which factor predominantly influences the impact of routine childhood vaccination for the prevention of varice…

2016

Background Varicella is a highly infectious disease with a significant public health and economic burden, which can be prevented with childhood routine varicella vaccination. Vaccination strategies differ by country. Some factors are known to play an important role (number of doses, coverage, dosing interval, efficacy and catch-up programmes), however, their relative impact on the reduction of varicella in the population remains unclear. This paper aims to help policy makers prioritise the critical factors to achieve the most successful vaccination programme with the available budget. Methods Scenarios assessed the impact of different vaccination strategies on reduction of varicella disease…

‹‹Una scherma amorosa››: Bufalino e il lettore

2011

2014

The contribution illustrates the results of the archaeological investigations carried out on the occasion of the reconstruction of the internal floor of the Church of San Francesco d'Assisi in Butera. The excavation brought to light three phases of restructuring of the monument, between the fourteenth and seventeenth centuries, legible, on the outside, in the wall stratigraphy of the western side of the nave.
