Ceramiche e altri rinvenimenti dalle cisterne del Castello di Butera: spunti e riflessioni

2011

The archaeological investigations (1998-1999) conducted in the area in front of the medieval castle of Butera (CL) have returned part of the internal courtyard of the building, equipped with a system of wells and siloi for water supply and granary. The stratigraphic relationships between the structures and the analysis of the material found inside the cisterns, as well as highlighting the different building phases during which the extensive collection system for water and grain was built (12th/13th-15th century ), allow us to have interesting indicators relating to the duration of circulation of the various pottery classes identified

TRADITION AND MODERNITY OF CATALAN VAULTS: HISTORICAL AND STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS

2012

Luminal Lipid Regulates CD36 Levels and Downstream Signaling to Stimulate Chylomicron Synthesis

2011

International audience; The membrane glycoprotein CD36 binds nanomolar concentrations of long chain fatty acids (LCFA) and is highly expressed on the luminal surface of enterocytes. CD36 deficiency reduces chylomicron production through unknown mechanisms. In this report, we provide novel insights into some of the underlying mechanisms. Our in vivo data demonstrate that CD36 gene deletion in mice does not affect LCFA uptake and subsequent esterification into triglycerides by the intestinal mucosa exposed to the micellar LCFA concentrations prevailing in the intestine. In rodents, the CD36 protein disappears early from the luminal side of intestinal villi during the postprandial period, but …

Stochastic sensitivity of bull and bear states

2021

We study the price dynamics generated by a stochastic version of a Day–Huang type asset market model with heterogenous, interacting market participants. To facilitate the analysis, we introduce a methodology that allows us to assess the consequences of changes in uncertainty on the dynamics of an asset price process close to stable equilibria. In particular, we focus on noise-induced transitions between bull and bear states of the market under additive as well as parametric noise. Our results are obtained by combining the stochastic sensitivity function (SSF) approach, a mixture of analytical and numerical techniques, due to Mil’shtein and Ryashko (1995) with concepts and techniques from th…

Wages, prices, and technology in early Catalan industrialization

2015

Catalonia was the only Mediterranean region among the early followers of the British industrial revolution. The roots of this process can be traced back to the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries when the Catalan economy became integrated into international trade, and a successful printed calico industry concentrated in the city of Barcelona. Although the factory system was largely adopted by the cotton industry in the 1840s, the diffusion of the spinning jenny in Catalonia had occurred earlier, in the 1790s. In line with Allen, this article explores whether relative factor prices played a role in the widespread adoption of the spinning jenny in Catalonia. First, series of real wages in Ba…

Wages and prices in early Catalan industrialisation

2014

Catalonia was the only Mediterranean region among the early followers of the British Industrial Revolution in the second third of the nineteenth century. The roots of this industrialisation process can be traced back to the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries when the Catalan economy became successfully integrated in international trade and the region enjoyed an intensification of its agrarian and proto-industrial activities. These capitalist developments were subsequently reinforced by a successful printed calico manufacturing business concentrated in the city of Barcelona. Although the factory system was largely adopted by the cotton industry in the 1840s, the diffusion of the spinning j…

Arsenic-induced DNA hypomethylation affects chromosomal instability in mammalian cells

2004

Early genetic instability induced in dividing V79-Cl3 Chinese hamster cells by inorganic arsenic, as demonstrated in our previous investigation, was evidenced by aneuploidy and nuclear abnormalities, but not by chromosomal rearrangements. Here we report the results of cytogenetic and morphological analyses performed on the progeny of cells dividing at the end of sodium arsenite treatment after they had been expanded through 120 generations (ASO cells) and then cloned. The acquired genetic instability persisted and was increased by highly unstable chromosomal rearrangements, namely dicentric chromosomes and telomeric associations, which were not seen following acute exposure. A peculiar find…

The potential of acetaminophen as a prodrug in gene-directed enzyme prodrug therapy.

2000

Acetaminophen is oxidized by human CYP1A2 to the cytotoxic metabolite N-acetylbenzoquinoneimine (NABQI). Incubation of cells transfected with human CYP1A2 (H1A2 MZ cells) with 4-20 mM acetaminophen for 6 hours at 37 degrees C caused extensive cytotoxicity (cell viability10%). In contrast, nontransfected V79 MZ cells were unaffected (viability95%). By mixing H1A2 MZ cells with V79 MZ cells in various proportions and incubating with 4 mM acetaminophen, it was shown that the NABQI released from H1A2 MZ cells also caused cytotoxicity of bystander cells. Thus, in a mixture containing 5% H1A2 MZ cells, exposure to 4 mM acetaminophen for 6 hours resulted in complete cell killing by 24 hours. A sim…

Ultraviolet light-induced DNA damage triggers apoptosis in nucleotide excision repair-deficient cells via Bcl-2 decline and caspase-3/-8 activation.

2001

Ultraviolet (UV) light is a potent mutagenic and genotoxic agent. Whereas DNA damage induced by UV light is known to be responsible for UV-induced genotoxicity, its role in triggering apoptosis is still unclear. We addressed this issue by comparing nucleotide excision repair (NER) deficient 27-1 and 43-3B Chinese hamster (CHO) cells with the corresponding wild-type and ERCC-1 complemented cells. It is shown that NER deficient cells are dramatically hypersensitive to UV-C induced apoptosis, indicating that DNA damage is the major stimulus for the apoptotic response. Apoptosis triggered by UV-C induced DNA damage is related to caspase- and proteosome-dependent degradation of Bcl-2 protein. Th…
