EUROPA 2020 IN SICILIA: SPIN-OFF DI RICERCA, DISTRETTI HIGH-TECH E STRATEGIE DI INNOVAZIONE ISTITUZIONALE
2014

Options and Accounting Information: Empirical Evidence in Stock and Derivative Markets
2014
This study investigates the informational role of options trading in the price discovery process around the dissemination of accounting information, specifically annual and quarterly earnings announcements. Firstly, we examine the effect of options markets by analyzing stock market reaction to earnings news conditional on the availability of options markets. Secondly, we examine options-trading activity around the release of earnings news. Results show that when options trading is available, the options market enhances the price efficiency of equity markets. Moreover, the dissemination of earnings news is associated with significant unusual activity in the options market due to informed tra…
The value relevance of losses revisited: the importance of earnings aggregation
2011
Accepted version of an article published in the journal: Global Business and Economics Review. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1504/GBER.2011.040728 Prior research has suggested that earnings explain a larger portion of the variation in stock returns when disaggregated into components. This study shows that the increase in explanatory power stems primarily from disaggregation of negative earnings. When accounting earnings are sufficiently disaggregated into items, there is no longer a statistical difference in the value relevance of positive and negative earnings. Thus, negative earnings are also useful to stock investors. The findings are attributed to earnings p…
On the Asymmetric Recognition of Good and Bad News in France, Germany and the United Kingdom
2001
We investigate whether accounting systems recognise bad news more promptly in earnings than good news, where news is proxied by changes in share price. The analysis is based on a sample of firm/years drawn from France, Germany, and the UK during 1990 to 1998. These three countries are the originators of three distinct legal traditions. Previous studies have argued that asymmetric recognition, one manifestation of conservative accounting, is sensitive to legal background and history. We find that in all three countries the contemporaneous association between earnings and returns is much stronger for bad news (i.e. when price changes are negative) than for good news, and although the results …
A Critical Comparison of Remote Sensing Leaf Area Index Estimates over Rice-Cultivated Areas: From Sentinel-2 and Landsat-7/8 to MODIS, GEOV1 and EUM…
2018
Leaf area index (LAI) is a key biophysical variable fundamental in natural vegetation and agricultural land monitoring and modelling studies. This paper is aimed at comparing, validating and discussing different LAI satellite products from operational services and customized solution based on innovative Earth Observation (EO) data such as Landsat-7/8 and Sentinel-2A. The comparison was performed to assess overall quality of LAI estimates for rice, as a fundamental input of different scale (regional to local) operational crop monitoring systems such as the ones developed during the "An Earth obseRvation Model based RicE information Service" (ERMES) project. We adopted a multiscale approach f…
Testing Multi-Sensors Time Series of Lai Estimates to Monitor Rice Phenology: Preliminary Results
2018
Timely and accurate information on crop growth and seasonal dynamics are increasingly needed to develop monitoring systems aimed to detect seasonal anomalies, support site specific management and estimate crop yield at the end of the season. In particular, frequent decametric information nowadays being provided exploiting the new generation of Earth Observation (EO) platforms are fundamental for farm level monitoring. This study presents an analysis aimed at fully exploiting dense time series of EO data derived from the combined use of ESA Sentinel-2A and NASA Landsat-7/8 imageries for crop phenological monitoring. Decametric Leaf Area Index (LAI) maps were generated for the year 2016 by in…
Early entry events in Echovirus 30 infection
2020
Echovirus 30 (E30), a member of the enterovirus B species, is a major cause of viral meningitis, targeting children and adults alike. While it is a frequently isolated enterovirus and the cause of several outbreaks all over the world, surprisingly little is known regarding its entry and replication strategy within cells. In this study, we used E30 strain Bastianni (E30B) generated from an infectious cDNA clone in order to study early entry events during infection in human RD cells. E30B required the newly discovered Fc echovirus receptor (FcRn) for successful infection, but not the coxsackievirus and adenovirus receptor (CAR) or decay-accelerating factor (DAF), although an interaction with …

Factor Momentum, Investor Sentiment, and Option-Implied Volatility-Scaling
2020
Factor momentum produces robust average returns that exhibit a similar economic magnitude as documented for stock price momentum. To the extent that the PEAD factor captures mispricing, winner factors profit from being long on underpriced stocks and short on overpriced stocks. Oppositely, loser factors’ negative exposure to the PEAD factor suggests that loser factors capture mispricing by being long on overpriced stocks and short on underpriced stocks. Option-implied volatility scaling increases both the economic magnitude and statistical significance of factor momentum. Factor momentum is not exposed to the same crashes as stock price momentum and could therefore serve as a hedge for stock…
