Quantification of thrombocyte growth factors in platelet concentrates produced by discontinuous cell separation.
2002
Platelet concentrates (PC) are increasingly used to increase bone regeneration in pre-prosthetic surgery. Although it is generally appreciated that certain growth factors (PDGF, TGF, EGF, and ECGF) are present in thrombocyte preparations, relatively little is known about these components in quantitative terms. The study reported here analysed the amounts of growth factors in PC produced under standard conditions from healthy volunteers. All the blood samples (237 in total) were analysed using Quantikine ELISA kits (R and D). The mean +/- SD platelet count in whole blood from these donors was 262,000+/-58,000/microl, while in PC produced by discontinuous cell separation it was 1.419,000+/-33…
A comparative study of platelet-rich plasma, hydroxyapatite, demineralized bone matrix and autologous bone to promote bone regeneration after mandibu…
2009
Objectives: 1) to compare mandibular bone regeneration by applying autologous bone, platelet-rich plasma and two biomaterials (synthetic calcium hydroxyapatite, and demineralized bone matrix), and thus establish the potential benefits of these biomaterials in the regeneration of postextraction alveolar bone, 2) to identify wich of them accelerates more bone regeneration and 3) to determine whether there are differences in the postoperative period (pain, swelling, trismus, infection) depending on the material used. Study Design: It consists in a prospective, controlled (with a split- mouth design) and double blinded study. We use as a model an easily reproducible non-critical bone defect: th…
Clinicopathologic features of nasopalatine duct cysts: A retrospective study in two Brazilian oral and maxillofacial pathology referral centers
2021
Background Nasopalatine duct cyst (NDC) is the most common non-odontogenic cyst in the oral cavity. Clinically it is not difficult to suspect these lesions based on clinical and radiographic appearance. However, the histopathological diagnosis may be difficult due to the broad morphological diversity of these lesions. The objective was to analyze the clinicopathological features of NDCs diagnosed in two oral and maxillofacial pathology services in the Brazilian northeast. Material and Methods A retrospective clinicopathologic study was performed. A total of 18,121 clinical records of oral lesions from two oral and maxillofacial pathology services in Brazil were analyzed (2000-2020). All NDC…
Magnetic resonance and ultrasound in achilles tendinopathy: Predictive role and response assessment to platelet-rich plasma and adipose-derived strom…
2017
To assess the correlation between magnetic resonance and ultrasound findings and clinical outcome after intratendinous injection of leucocyte-rich platelet-rich plasma or adipose-derived stromal vascular fraction in patients with non-insertional Achilles tendinopathy.Forty-three patients (age: 47.8±5.1, range 29-55) with unilateral or bilateral non-insertional Achilles tendinopathy (58 tendons overall) were randomly assigned to platelet-rich plasma (22 patients, 28 tendons) or adipose-derived stromal vascular fraction (21 patients, 30 tendons) injection group. All patients underwent magnetic resonance (tendon cross-sectional area, signal intensity, maximum anteroposterior thickness were mea…
Hyaluronic acid and platelet-rich plasma, a new therapeutic alternative for scleroderma patients: a prospective open-label study
2019
Abstract Background Systemic sclerosis is a systemic connective tissue disease characterized by endothelium damage, fibrosis, and subsequent atrophy of the skin. Perioral fibrosis produces a characteristic microstomia together with microcheilia, both of which cause severe difficulties and affects patients’ daily life, such as eating and oral hygiene. Since there are no effective and specific therapies, we have aimed at evaluating the response to filler injections of hyaluronic acid together with platelet-rich plasma. Methods Ten female patients aged between 18 and 70 were included in this study. Each patient was treated with three filler injections of hyaluronic acid and platelet-rich plasm…
Modulation of platelet activation and initial cytokine release by alloplastic bone substitute materials.
2010
Objectives: Platelet-derived cytokines play a crucial role in tissue regeneration. In regenerative dental medicine, bone substitute materials (BSM) are widely used. However, initial interactions of BSM and platelets are still unknown. The aim of this study was to evaluate the potential of platelet activation and subsequent initial cytokine release by different commercial alloplastic BSM. Material and methods: Eight commercial BSM of different origins and chemical compositions (tricalcium phosphate, hydroxyapatite, bioactive glass: SiO2 and mixtures) were incubated with a platelet concentrate (platelet-rich plasma, PRP) of three healthy volunteers at room temperature for 15 min. Platelet cou…
Analysis and comparison of autologous platelet-rich plasma preparation systems used in the treatment of enthesopathies: A preliminary study
2021
Background Autologous platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injection is an alternative but widely accepted method for the treatment of degenerative changes in tendon attachments known as enthesopathies. The PRP is considered a safe source for high concentrations of the growth factors involved in the healing process. Despite initial promising outcomes, many recent studies report conflicting results for this treatment. This may be due to differences in the concentrations of platelets and growth factors in PRPs obtained using different methods. Objectives The aim of this study was to compare PRP preparation systems in terms of morphotic components and selected growth factors to find the most appropriate…
Preparation and Application of an Innovative Thrombocyte/Leukocyte-Enriched Plasma to Promote Tissue Repair in Chelonians
2015
Platelet concentrates are widely used in mammalian regenerative medicine to improve tissue healing. Chelonians (Testudines) would benefit from the application of thrombocyte preparations to regenerate damaged tissues, since traumatic injuries are leading causes of morbidity and mortality for both wild-living and domesticated animals. The aim of this study was to establish a protocol that optimized the recovery of the thrombocytes from blood samples and to show the efficacy of thrombocyte-enriched plasma in chelonians. Peripheral blood samples were obtained from Testudo spp. (n = 12) and Trachemys scripta elegans (n = 10). Blood cells were fractionated by sodium diatrizoate-sodium polysucros…
The Harvest Smart PRePTMsystem versus the Friadent-Schütze platelet-rich plasma kit
2003
An important reason to improve methods for isolating platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is the potential use of autogenous platelet growth factors. In addition to the Curasan PRP kit (Curasan, Kleinostheim, Germany) and the platelet concentrated collection system (PCCSTM) system, two new methods for the preparation of PRP by the surgeon are now available. This study compared the suitability of these new methods for the preparation of PRP. Whole blood was drawn from 54 healthy donors (33 men and 21 women) aged 23-79 years (38.0 +/- 17.7 years). PRP was prepared from each donor's blood using both the Smart PRePTM system (Harvest Technologies Corporation, Munich, Germany) and the Friadent-Schutze meth…
Histomorphological study of the bone regeneration capacity of platelet-rich plasma, bone marrow and tricalcium phosphate Experimental study on pigs
2009
Introduction: Bone defects are rather common after oral surgery and may prove difficult to repair. Objective: We provide a histomorphological analysis of the bone regenerative capacity of platelet-rich plasma at different concentrations and the extraction of platelet-rich bone marrow, compared with -tricalcium phosphate. Methodology: We performed an experimental study on 8 pigs, in which we performed trepanations of the mandible in order to place the materials to be studied. Using an electron microscope, we observed the samples obtained and took a series of photographs in order to analyze the samples through a gray-scale histogram system. Results: Ossification phenomena were present in 96% …
