The aim of this study was to explore mortality risk according to cognitive status during hospitalization and after 3 months in elderly patients. METHODS: Sixty-six internal medicine and geriatric wards in Italy participated in the "Registry Politerapie SIMI (REPOSI)" during 2010. We report the case of a 54-year-old male patient hospitalized for diarrhea and weight loss (8 kg over the previous three months). At admission, we observed pale oral and conjunctival mucosa and peripheral edema of the lower limbs. Stool frequency was 8-10 per day. Laboratory data were as follows: hemoglobin, 11 g/dL; total proteins, 4.3 g/dL; albumin, 2 g/dL; pseudocholinesterase, 1248 U/L; triglycerides, 54 mg/dL; serum cholesterol, 102 mg/dL; calcium, 7.9 mg/dL. Fecal fat was 8.2 g/24 hr. Fecal chymotrypsin (FCT) was 2.3 U/g. AbstractThe communities of metazoan endoparasites of blue whiting, Micromesistius poutassou, in waters of north-west Spain were analysed and a geographical comparison made with other localities. Four hundred blue whiting collected in July 1999 and September 2000 were examined for parasites, excluding the head and gills. Six species were found: Anisakis simplex s.l. (L3), A. physeteris (L3), Hysterothylacium aduncum (L2 and L3), Stephanostomum lophii (metacercaria), S. pristis (adult), and Prosorhynchus crucibulum (metacercaria). A new approach to modelling the shelf life of Gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata)

Summary A total of 217 Gilthead seabreams were subdivided in four groups, according to four different storage conditions. All fish were evaluated by both Quality Index Method (QIM) and microbiological analysis, sampling skin, gills and flesh, separately. A QIM score predictive system was set by modelling the growth of microflora of skin, gills and flesh and coupling these predictions to each related partial QIM score (QIMSkin, QIMGills, QIMFlesh). The expression of QIM score as a function of bacterial behaviour was carried out by the employment of two coefficients. Use of Pseudomonas sp. strain MT5 to prevent and treat Flavobacterium columnare infection was studied in 2 experiments with fingerling rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss. In the first experiment, length heterogeneity analysis of PCR-amplified DNA fragments (LH-PCR) was used to assess the effect of antagonistic baths on the microbial diversity of healthy and experimentally infected fish. In the 148 samples studied, no difference was found between bathed and unbathed fish, and 3 fragment lengths were detected most frequently: 500 (in 75.7% of the samples), 523 (62.2%) and 517 bp (40.5%). Una riflessione su alcune costanti presenti nell’opera di Giuseppe Samonà deve anticipare un approfondimento dedicato esclusivamente alle centrali termiche realizzate in Sicilia dal 1955 al 1962. Si vogliono inquadrare le ragioni di alcune scelte senza per questo avere la pretesa di raggiungere un’esaustività critica rispetto alle molte questioni offerte dall’ampia produzione teorica e progettuale di Samonà.
