A Positive Definite Advection Scheme for Use in Long Range Transport Models: Extension to Monotonicity

1992

Numerical modeling of atmospheric transport processes requires the solution of the continuity equation for prognostic variables such as momentum, heat, water vapor, liquid water or chemical species of the atmosphere. Although in the literature many advection schemes are known to solve this problem (Lax and Wendroff 1964, Crowley 1968, Tremback et al. 1987, Bott 1989a,b), these algorithms show different disadvantages, which sometimes yield undesirably poor numerical results. For instance, the upstream method is known to produce large numerical diffusion. The higher order versions of the advection schemes of Tremback et al. (1987) are much less diffusive. Unfortunately, the schemes are not po…

A new algorithm for a robust solution of the fully dynamic Saint-Venant equations

2003

A new procedure for the numerical solution of the fully dynamic shallow water equations is presented. The procedure is a fractional step methodology where the original system is split into two sequential ones. The first system differs from the original one because of the head gradient term, that is treated as constant and equal to the value computed at the end of the previous time step. The solution of this system, called kinematic, is computed in each element using a spatial zero order approximation for both the heads and the flow rates by means of integration of single ODEs. The second system is called diffusive, contains in the momentum equations only the complementary terms and can be e…

Measurement uncertainty impact on simplified load flow analysis in MV smart grids

2018

This work is focused on the measurement uncertainty impact on load flow analysis in medium voltage (MV) distribution networks. In more detail, the paper presents the uncertainty evaluation of a simplified load flow algorithm, which is based on the load power measurements at each secondary substation and one voltage measurement at the slack bus (i.e. the voltage at the MV bus bars of the primary substation). To reduce the costs of the monitoring system, the load flow algorithm makes use of LV load power measurements for all the substations except those of MV users, where MV transducers are usually already installed. The uncertainties on the algorithm input quantities (load powers and slack b…

Paleobiology and paleobiogeography of sclerorhynchid sawfishes (Chondrichthyes, Batomorphii)

2021

Sclerorhynchid sawfishes are a monophyletic group of Cretaceous selachians. They resemble modern sawfishes in the outer morphology and by having a hypertrophic rostral cartilage armed with lateral rows of spines. Generally, sclerorhynchid sawfishes were inhabitants of warm, shallow tropical and subtropical marine environments. Teeth of the oldest sclerorhynchid sawfishes from Spain are presented. They belong to Onchopristis Stromer and come from the lower Barrernian of eastern Spain. The paleobiology and paleogeographic pattern of sclerorhynchid sawfishes is reviewed and discussed.

Savigny a Bethmann-Hollweg, 27 agosto 1817: diritto e fede nella Historische Rechtsschule

2020

An unpublished letter written by Savigny to Bethmann-Hollweg in August 1817 provides a starting point for thinking about the relationship between the religious ideology of the Christian Revival (Erweckungsbewegung) , Prussian nationalism and the concept of law within the German Historical School.

Differentiation of Trichuris species using a morphometric approach

2019

Trichuris trichiura is a nematode considered as the whipworm present in humans and primates. The systematics of the genus Trichuris is complex. Morphological studies of Trichuris isolated from primates and humans conclude that the species infecting these hosts is the same. Furthermore, numerous molecular studies have been carried out so far to discriminate parasite species from humans and Non-Human Primates using molecular techniques, but these studies were not performed in combination with a parallel morphological study. The hypothesised existence of more species of Trichuris in primates opens the possibility to revise the zoonotic potential and host specificity of T. trichiura and other p…

Two new species ofUlota(Orthotrichaceae, Bryopsida) with multicellular spores, from the Hengduan Mountains, Southwestern China

2011

Two new species, Ulota yunnanensis and Ulota gigantospora, are described from Yunnan and Sichuan Provinces, China. Both have multicellular spores, a relatively uncommon character in the genus. Differences between the species include growth form and habit, leaf areolation, capsule shape, peristome structure and ornamentation, operculum shape and colour, as well as vaginula and calyptra hairiness. These characters and those discriminating the new species from other ones with similar spore type are discussed and illustrated.

New Ulota species with multicellular spores from southern South America

2012

Abstract Two new Ulota species with multicellular spores, Ulota billbuckii and U. streptodon, are described from southern Chile. The new species are usually found growing together and sometimes forming mixed cushions or mats on different trees, with a preference for Nothofagus betuloides and N. antarctica. The new Ulotae are easily differentiated from each other as well as from other Ulota species with multicellular spores by a set of sporophytic traits including two very uncommon peristome configurations. In this paper, both species are described, and the differences between them as well as from other Ulotae with similar endosporic germination, and from superficially similar species, is di…

The map of biodiversity : from local to global scales

2018

Species richness is not homogeneous in space and it normally presents differences when comparing among different sites. These differences often respond to gradients in one or several factors which create biodiversity patterns in space and are scale-dependent. At a local scale, diversity patterns depend on the habitat size (species-area relationship), the productivity, the environmental harshness, the frequency and intensity of disturbance, or the regional species pool. Regional diversity may be influenced by environmental heterogeneity (increasing dissimilarity), although it could act also at smaller or larger spatial scales, and the connectivity among habitats. Finally, at a global scale, …
