Spaces of Dirichlet series
2019
This work is dedicated to the study of multiple Dirichlet series and it focuses on three main aspects: convergence, spaces of bounded multiple Dirichlet series and the composition operators of such spaces. In the first chapter we give the necessary preliminary results on regular convergence of double and multiple series and its equivalence with the definition of convergence in a restricted sense. We also recall sequences of bounded variation and we show how they are the multipliers of convergent series in the space of sequences, extending also this characterization to double and multiple regularly conergent series. In the second chapter we recall the fundamentals on the theory of bounded or…
Estimating rainfall erosivity by aggregated drop size distributions
2016
Rainfall erosivity is defined as the potential of the rain to cause erosion, and it can be represented by rainfall kinetic power. At first in this paper, the raindrop size distributions (DSD) measured by an optical disdrometer located at Palermo in the period June 2006–March 2014 and aggregated for intensity classes, are presented. Then an analysis of raindrop size characteristics is carried out, and the reliability of Ulbrich's distribution, using both the maximum likelihood and momentum estimate parameter methods, is tested. The raindrop size measurements are used to determine the experimental rainfall kinetic power values, which are compared with the ones calculated by a theoretically de…
UV-induced cross-linking of proteins to plasmid pBR322 containing 8-azidoadenine 2′-deoxyribonucleotides
1988
Abstract An efficient method of cross-linking DNA to protein is described. The method is based on the incorporation of photoactive 8-azidoadenine 2′-deoxyribonucleotides into DNA. We have found that 8-N 3 dATP is a substrate for E. coli DNA polymerase I and that 8-N 3 dATP can be incorporated into plasmid pBR322 by nick-translation. Subsequently we were able to cross-link a set of different proteins to 8-azido-2′-deoxyadenosine-containing pBR322 by UV irradiation (366 nm). No DNA-protein photocross-linking was observed under the same conditions when the non-photoactive plasmid pBR322 was used.
Rotationally symmetric p -harmonic maps fromD2toS2
2013
We consider rotationally symmetric p-harmonic maps from the unit disk D2⊂R2 to the unit sphere S2⊂R3, subject to Dirichlet boundary conditions and with 1<p<∞. We show that the associated energy functional admits a unique minimizer which is of class C∞ in the interior and C1 up to the boundary. We also show that there exist infinitely many global solutions to the associated Euler–Lagrange equation and we completely characterize them.

Post-transcriptional regulation of the human inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) expression by the cytosolic poly(A)-binding protein (PABP).
2012
Affinity purification using the 3'-untranslated region (3'-UTR) of the human inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) mRNA identified the cytosolic poly(A)-binding protein (PABP) as a protein interacting with the human iNOS 3'-UTR. Downregulation of PABP expression by RNA interference resulted in a marked reduction of cytokine-induced iNOS mRNA expression without changes in the expression of mRNAs coding for the major subunit of the RNA polymerase II (Pol 2A) or β2-microglobuline (β2M). Along with the mRNA also iNOS protein expression was reduced by siPABP-treatment, whereas in the same cells protein expression of STAT-1α, NF-κB p65, or GAPDH was not altered. Reporter gene analyses showed no …
The 3'-UTR of the mRNA coding for the major protein kinase C substrate MARCKS contains a novel CU-rich element interacting with the mRNA stabilizing …
2003
The expression of the major protein kinase C substrate MARCKS (myristoylated alanine-rich C kinase substrate) is controlled by the stability of its mRNA. While the MARCKS mRNA is long living in quiescent fibroblasts (t1/2 = 14 h), its half-life time is drastically reduced (t1/2 = 2 h) in cells treated with phorbol esters to activate protein kinase C (PKC) or treated with growth factors. In a first step to study the underlying mechanism we identified both a cis-element on the MARCKS mRNA and the corresponding trans-acting factors. Fusing the complete 3'-UTR or specific regions of the 3'-UTR of the MARCKS gene to a luciferase reporter gene caused a drastic decrease in luciferase expression to…
Negative feedback regulation of the yeast CTH1 and CTH2 mRNA binding proteins is required for adaptation to iron deficiency and iron supplementation.
2013
Iron (Fe) is an essential element for all eukaryotic organisms because it functions as a cofactor in a wide range of biochemical processes. Cells have developed sophisticated mechanisms to tightly control Fe utilization in response to alterations in cellular demands and bioavailability. In response to Fe deficiency, the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae activates transcription of the CTH1 and CTH2 genes, which encode proteins that bind to AU-rich elements (AREs) within the 3′ untranslated regions (3′UTRs) of many mRNAs, leading to metabolic reprogramming of Fe-dependent pathways and decreased Fe storage. The precise mechanisms underlying Cth1 and Cth2 function and regulation are incompletely u…
