Metal specificity of the Ni(II) and Zn(II) binding sites of the N-terminal and G-domain of E. coli HypB

HypB is one of the chaperones required for proper nickel insertion into [NiFe]-hydrogenase. Escherichia coli HypB has two potential Ni(II) and Zn(II) binding sites—the N-terminal one and the so-called GTPase one. The metal-loaded HypB–SlyD metallochaperone complex activates nickel release from the N-terminal HypB site. In this work, we focus on the metal selectivity of the two HypB metal binding sites and show that (i) the N-terminal region binds Zn(II) and Ni(II) ions with higher affinity than the G-domain and (ii) the lower affinity G domain binds Zn(II) more effectively than Ni(II). Orthotrichum Norrisii (Orthotrichaceae), A New Epiphytic Californian Moss

Abstract A new Orthotrichum species, O. norrisii, is described from California. The new taxon is recognized by a unique combination of sporophytic characters: capsule narrowly cylindrical and not contracted below mouth when dry, exothecial bands narrow and formed by 2(–3) cell rows, peristome with eight pairs of exostome teeth and eight endostome segments, stomata cryptopore and located in the lower part of the urn, lid plane and rostrate and vaginula hairy. Widely distributed throughout California, the new taxon has been overlooked and confused with O. tenellum.

Members of the genus Brucella are intracellular -Proteobacteria responsible for brucellosis, a chronic disease of humans and animals. Little is known about Brucella virulence mechanisms, but the abilities of these bacteria to invade and to survive within cells are decisive factors for causing disease. Transmission electron and fluorescence microscopy of infected nonprofessional phagocytic HeLa cells revealed minor membrane changes accompanied by discrete recruitment of F-actin at the site of Brucella abortus entry. The determination of maturity stages in male elasmobranchs (Chondrichthyes) using a segmented regression of clasper length on total length

A novel statistical method for estimating the stages of maturity in male sharks and skates based on a segmented regression (SRM) is proposed. We hypothesize that this method is able to find the transition points in the three-phase relationship between total length (TL) and clasper length (CL). We applied an SRM to TL–CL data of nine species, from large pelagic sharks (e.g., Carcharhinus falciformis) to small coastal skates (e.g., Rioraja agassizi), captured in the southwestern Atlantic and northeastern Pacific. Scale-dependent plant diversity in Palaearctic grasslands: a comparative overview

Here we present an extensive overview of plant diversity values in Palaearctic grasslands for seven standard grain sizes from 0.0001 to 100 m². The data originate from 20 studies, including the Field Workshops of the Eurasian Dry Grassland Group (EDGG), ranging geographically from Spain in the west to Siberia in the east, from Sicily in the south to Estonia in the north and from the sea coast up to 3100 m a.s.l. The majority of data is from dry grasslands (Festuco-Brometea, Koelerio-Corynephoretea, Cleistogenetea squarrosae), but there are also some mesic, wet, saline, acidic, alpine and Mediterranean grasslands included. Assessing plant diversity and composition in grasslands across spatial scales: the standardised EDGG sampling methodology

This paper presents the details of the EDGG sampling methodology and its underlying rationales. The methodology has been applied during EDGG Research Expeditions and EDGG Field Workshops since 2009, and has been subsequently adopted by various other researchers. The core of the sampling are the EDGG Biodiversity Plots, which are 100‐m2 squares comprising, in two opposite corners, nested‐plot series of 0.0001, 0.001, 0.01, 0.1, 1 and 10 m2 square plots, in which all terricolous vascular plants, bryophytes and lichens are recorded using the shoot presence method.
