Recent reaserch has directed attention to the properties of the eroded material because of its influence in deposition phenomena and in carrying capacity of pollutant materials
The Utility of Ground Bryophytes in the Assessment of Soil Condition in Heavy Metal-Polluted Grasslands
2022
Bryophytes are commonly used in biomonitoring heavy metal pollution, whereas the bioindicative value of bryophyte communities is a less known issue. The aim of the present study is to recognize the utility of the bryophyte community’s structure in the assessment of soil condition in heavy metal-polluted, dry grasslands. The study plots are examined with respect to bryophytes; vascular plants; concentrations of Zn, Pb, Cd, and As in the soil; total nitrogen and organic carbon content in the soil; and soil pH. The results show that both bryophyte species richness and composition greatly depend on soil chemical characteristics, including heavy-metal pollution levels and soil pH. Three groups o…
The adaptations to tube-dwelling life of Propsilocerus akamusi (Diptera: Chironomidae) larvae and its eutrophication-tolerant mechanisms
2019
Propsilocerus akamusi (Diptera: Chironomidae) is a dominant macroinvertebrate species in many eutrophic lakes in subtropical and temperate zones. P. akamusi larvae can migrate deep into the sediment (>30 cm) during summer where is no oxygen. However, to our knowledge, the specific adaptive tactics of its tube-dwelling life (>30 cm) and underlying mechanisms why this species is favored by nutrient-rich lakes remain limited. With the understanding above-mentioned issues, we can provide important information for the development of sensitive biomonitoring. We examined monthly morphological dynamics and physiological adaptations of P. akamusi to anoxic conditions, and environmental relationships…

Organisationaalinen identiteetti ja kilpailu : tutkielma puolijohdeteollisuudesta. Tutkimuksen tehtävänä on selvittää, miten kaksi samalla puolijohdesektorilla kilpailevaa yritystä, Intel Corporation ja Advanced Micro Devices, kuvailee itseänsä ja kenttäänsä suhteessa kilpailijoihinsa ja siten rakentaa ja ylläpitää organisationaalista identiteettiään. Tutkimuksen teoreettisena näkökulmana on tarkastella markkinoita sosiaalisesti rakentuneena kenttänä jota kilpailu ylläpitää. Analyysimenetelmänä on käytetty koneoppivaa tekstin mallinnusmenetelmää nimeltä Latentti Dirichlet Allokaatio (LDA), jolla …

Seasonal variation in diversity of marine benthic invertebrates leads to a positive species-genetic diversity correlation (SGDC)
2018
Species-genetic diversity correlations (SGDCs) are useful indicators of processes that simultaneously affect diversity at multiple biological levels. We combined spatial and temporal sampling of 4 study sites in the Danish Isefjord-Roskilde Fjord Estuary at 4 time points over 1 yr to investigate the effect of seasonal variation on SGDCs. Species diversity was estimated as species richness from samples comprising 20752 individuals representing 51 benthic invertebrate taxa. Genetic diversity was estimated for a single focal taxon, the polychaete Pygospio elegans, as mean allelic richness at 7 microsatellite loci. Combining all samples, a significant positive correlation between species richne…
Weed vegetation of cereal crops in Tajikistan (Pamir Alai Mts., Middle Asia)
2013
The paper presents results of investigations of weed vegetation conducted in crop fields, in Tajikistan (Middle Asia) - one of the world cradles of the weed flora. The study has been based on 299 phytosociological relevés obtained in various geobotanical regions of the country in 2009-2012. In the examined vegetation patches 469 vascular plant species were noted. Many of the recorded species are widespread weeds. However, there were also some rare and endemics taxa (e.g. Prangos pabularia, P. saraw-schanica and Thlaspidium thlaspi) observed in the sample plots. The collected material presents probably, the majority of the variability among the weed communities of crop cultivations in the Mi…
Vascular structure of the earliest shark teeth
2018
Here we use synchrotron tomography to characterise dental vasculature in the oldest known tooth-bearing sharks, Leonodus carlsi Mader, 1986 and Celtiberina maderi Wang, 1993. Three dimensional reconstruction of the vascular system and microstructure of both taxa revealed a complex and dense network of canals, including horizontal, ascending and secondary bifurcated canals, as well as histological features consistent with an osteodont histotype. However, L. carlsi and C. maderi also exhibit significant morphological differences, showing Leonodus a typical diplodont tooth morphology with a linguo-labially elongated base, that contrast with Celtiberina’s teeth that show a single conical cusp c…
Enameloid microstructure in the oldest known chondrichthyan teeth
2009
Botella, H., Donoghue, P.C.J and Martinez-Perez, C. 2009. The enameloid microstructure of the oldest known chondrichthyan teeth. — Acta Zoologica (Stockholm) 90 (Suppl. 1): 103‐108 Previous studies on tooth enameloid microstructure in several chondrichthyan taxa spanning the phylogeny of the group provided support for the homology of chondrichthyan tooth enameloid. This hypothesis requires that a single crystallite enameloid (SCE) monolayer must be present in the teeth of the most primitive chondrichthyan. However, the dental microstructure of the earliest sharks has yet to be investigated. We have studied the tooth enameloid microstructure of the two oldest tooth-bearing shark species curr…
