F75Determining fetal lung volume using three-dimensional-ultrasonography
2000
Background The aim of the study was to establish fetal lung, thoracic and heart volume nomograms using 3D-ultrasonography. Method For this purpose 115 fetuses were examined (between 18 and 33 weeks of gestation) using Voluson 530D (Kretztechnik, Austria) ultrasound device and 5 MHZ three-dimensional annular volume transducer. Lung volumes of 15 fetuses suffering from skeletal dysplasia, renal agenesis or hydrothorax and secondary pulmonary hypoplasia were compared with previously established nomograms. Results Lung volumes in the pathologic group of fetuses compared to the nomograms were below the 5% for gestational age. Conclusion The encouraging first results suggest that this method coul…

3-D ultrasound in prenatal diagnosis
1999
Abstract 2-D ultrasonography has evolved into an excellent technique in prenatal diagnosis during the past 40 years. The fact remains, however, that 2-D ultrasonography is marked by a lack of ability to provide more than a 2-D demonstration of a 3-D fetus. Although many fetal anomalies are detectable by conventional 2-D ultrasound, it is impossible to demonstrate a defect in the third dimension. 3-D sonography not only offers the third plane, but it also provides the examiner with different viewing modes: the multiplanar, the surface and the transparent demonstration of the fetus. The different viewing modes not only improve the accuracy in detecting fetal malformations, but also serve to d…
Goserelin acetate to avoid hysterectomy in pre-menopausal women with fibroids requiring surgery
1999
Objective: To obtain information on the efficacy of repeated short cycles of GNRH agonist treatment in order to avoid hysterectomy in near-menopausal women with symptomatic fibroids. Study design: 72 pre-menopausal women (mean age 50 years) with one or more uterine fibroids >10 cm in diameter, symptomatic menorrhagia lasting three months or more and haemoglobin=9 g/dl entered the study. The patients were randomized with ratio of approximately 1:4 to: (a) immediate surgery; or (b) treatment with goserelin acetate. Patients randomized to goserelin acetate received a first cycle of 3.6 mg depot once every 28 days for four months. They were followed-up for three years. If menorrhagia was observ…
The impact of chocolate on cardiovascular health
2011
Cardiovascular disease is the leading determinant of mortality and morbidity in women. Functional foods are attracting interest as potential regulators of the susceptibility to disease. Supported by epidemiological evidence, chocolate has emerged as a possible modulator of cardiovascular risk. Chocolate, or cocoa as the natural source, contains flavanols, a subclass of flavonoids. The latter years have witnessed an increasing number of experimental and clinical studies that suggest a protective effect of chocolate against atherogenesis. Oxidative stress, inflammation, and endothelial function define three biological mechanisms that have shown sensitivity to chocolate. Moreover, the consumpt…

P–410 Comparison of the incidence of miscarriage rates in frozen versus fresh embryo transfers in IVF/ICSI cycles: a meta-analysis of Randomized Cont…
2021
Abstract Study question Is the incidence of miscarriage rates increased in frozen embryo transfer (ET) compared with fresh ET? Summary answer The frozen ET is not associated with an increased risk of miscarriage in comparison with fresh ET. What is known already Nowadays, the freeze-all policy has gained great popularity because it minimizes OHSS and it seems to improve the reproductive outcomes. This increase was possible thanks to progress in vitrification procedures. Nevertheless, some recent evidence suggests more caution on the wide use of elective frozen ET in a general IVF population for its possible effect on some pregnancy-related complications. Endometrial preparation schemes for …
Endocrinology and physiology of pseudocyesis
2013
This literature review on pseudocyesis or false pregnancy aims to find epidemiological, psychiatric/psychologic, gynecological and endocrine traits associated with this condition in order to propose neuroendocrine/endocrine mechanisms leading to the emergence of pseudocyetic traits. Ten women from 5 selected studies were analyzed after applying stringent criteria to discriminate between cases of true pseudocyesis (pseudocyesis vera) versus delusional, simulated or erroneous pseudocyesis. The analysis of the reviewed studies evidenced that pseudocyesis shares many endocrine traits with both polycystic ovarian syndrome and major depressive disorder, although the endocrine traits are more akin…
Diagnostic laparoscopy in a Gartner's duct cyst
2008
Gartner's duct cysts associated with renal dysgenesis are rare malformations and represent a diagnostic challenge. We report on one such case in which final diagnosis was achieved by laparoscopy and discuss the possible role of minimally invasive surgery in the management of this condition.
