302 Hearing Abnormalities in Children with Fabry Disease: Data from FOS - the Fabry Outcome Survey

2005

Background: Fabry disease is an X-linked glycosphingolipid storage disorder due to a deficiency of the enzyme alpha-galactosidase A. Accumulation of substrate results in a progressive and life-threatening multisystemic disease. Early clinical manifestations include pain and gastrointestinal symptoms. Sensorineural hearing loss and vertigo are well-recognized features of the disorder, occurring in approximately 50% of adults with Fabry disease. We have investigated the audiological symptoms of Fabry disease in children using pure-tone and impedance audiometry. Methods: Symptom history was obtained using a standardized questionnaire from FOS − the Fabry Outcome Survey. Hearing was measured us…

Veränderungen in den Skalen Bindung und Steuerung der Achse Struktur der Operationalisierten Psychodynamischen Diagnostik im Kindes- und Jugendalter …

2019

Pharmacological Management of Cancer Pain in the Elderly

2007

Existing studies indicate a high prevalence rate and poor management of cancer pain in the elderly. Pain is often considered an expected concomitant of aging, and older patients are considered more sensitive to opioids. Despite the well known pharmacokinetic changes in the elderly, the complex network of factors involved in the opioid response make the evaluation of a single element, such as age, more difficult. Notwithstanding such difficulties, appropriate analgesic treatment is able to control cancer pain in the elderly in most cases. Skills necessary to optimise pain control in older cancer patients include the ability to objectively assess functional age (not necessarily related to chr…

Background: Central venous access devices (CVAD) provide important benefits in the management of oncological pediatric patients. However, these catheters are responsible for severe complications. Methods: In this context, we aimed to analyze all patients receiving a CVAD in the Department of Pediatric Hematology and Oncology of the University hospital of Mainz over a period of 9 years, focused on CVAD related complications. Data on demographics, as well as intraoperative and postoperative complications were extracted. Results: A total of 296 patients with a mean age 93.2 ± 62.4 months were analyzed. The majority suffered from leukemia (n = 91, 30.7%), lymphomas (n = 50, 16.9%), and brain tu…
