In a door-to-door survey conducted in two municipalities of Sicily, we ascertained the prevalence of diabetic neuropathy. Our case-finding was restricted to subjects with somatic symptoms. During phase 1, we administered a screening instrument for peripheral neuropathy to 14,540 persons residing in Santa Teresa di Riva (Messina Province) and Terrasini (Palermo Province). During phase 2, neurologists evaluated those subjects who had screened positive. Diagnoses were based on clinical criteria only, and were reviewed by an adjudication panel. Epidemiology of retinitis pigmentosa in the valencian community (Spain)

The purposes of this study are to determine the frequencies of the different genetic forms of retinitis pigmentosa and to perform segregation analysis in the different genetic subtypes. Retinitis pigmentosa was diagnosed in 263 persons from 132 families. The frequency of the autosomal recessive type was the highest (31.8%) while the X-linked type was very rare (1.5%). The frequency of autosomal dominant type was 14.4% and the simplex cases constituted half of the total cases of RP registered in our community. Sleep disordered breathing in patients with cardiovascular comorbidities hospitalized for pulmonary disease

Sleep disordered breathing (SDB) is often overlooked in hospitalized patients. We screened consecutive patients with cardiovascular (CV) comorbidities hospitalized for respiratory problems to study SDB prevalence and type. Patients did not refer typical clinical signs of SDB. Patients (n=34, 21 M, mean age±SD 71±12 yr, BMI: 31.9±5.8 kg/m2) were studied by polygraphy (SomnoLab, Weinmann, Germany) 4.5±3.2 days after admission for COPD exacerbation (COPD-E, n=20), pleural effusion (n=2), asthma exacerbation (n=2) or other causes (n=10). Estradiol, progesterone, 17-hydroxyprogesterone, androstenedione and CA125 were assayed in 25 women (12 oophorectomized before entering the study) with ovarian carcinoma. The data from patients were ordered according to the presence or absence of the gonads. The patients with ovaries (Group A) showed significantly higher levels of estradiol (p less than 0.01), progesterone (p less than 0.01) and 17-hydroxyprogesterone (p less than 0.01) than controls. This difference was not observed between oophorectomized patients (Group B) and controls.
