Environmental facilitators for outdoor walking and development of walking difficulty in community-dwelling older adults

2013

Older adults who report environmental barriers in their neighborhood have a higher risk for walking difficulty. However, environmental facilitators that protect against walking difficulty are not well known. The objective of this study was to identify the effect of environmental facilitators for outdoor walking on development of walking difficulty in community-dwelling older people. This was a prospective study with a 3.5-year follow-up time on 261 community-dwelling people aged 75–81 years, who at baseline were able to walk 0.5 km without difficulty. Environmental facilitators for outdoor walking were self-reported with standardized questionnaires, including having features in one’s home w…

To whose good? Directions and gaps in psychiatric research

2021

Background: Psychiatry’s evidence-, implementation-, and treatment-gaps. Aims: The aim of this study is to uncover current trends and gaps in psychiatric research. Understanding where psychiatric research is going and where there might be blind spots is important to better align it with global mental health challenges and with service users’ needs. Method: 10 top-ranking scientific journals (highest impact factors) in psychiatry were identified for 3 years (1999, 2009, 2019) using Clarivate Analytics. Metadata of all papers published by these journals in the index years were downloaded, and the relevance and relatedness of terms from all titles and abstracts were computed and visualized usi…

Needs Assessment in Care of Adults With Anorectal Malformations and Exstrophy-Epispadias Complex in Germany

2018

Introduction: Medical needs of adults with anorectal malformations (ARM) and the exstrophy-epispadias complex (EEC) are not fully understood. Therefore, the aim of the study was to evaluate how affected individuals get along with the current national medical care and what their medical or social long-term requirements are. Patients and Methods: Between 11/2014-07/2016 all adult members (≥18 years, ARM n = 113, EEC n = 126) of the German self-help organizations SoMA e.V. and Blasenekstrophie/Epispadie e.V. were contacted via email or post and asked to fill out an anonymous online questionnaire regarding medical requirements, treatment satisfaction, daily life impairment and expectations rega…

Fertility protection: complications of surgery and results of removal and transplantation of ovarian tissue

2017

Fertility-preserving measures are becoming important for patients receiving oncological treatment. One method involves cryopreservation of ovarian tissue and transplanting it when treatment is completed. We report complications resulting from surgical and fertility medicine, and the results of procedures for the removal and transplantation of ovarian tissue carried out within the FertiProtekt network. A survey using a structured questionnaire was conducted among the FertiProtekt network centres between November 2015 and June 2016. The analysis included surgical techniques used to remove and transplant ovarian tissue, surgical complications and results. Laparoscopic removal and transplantati…

Internet Addiction: Starting the Debate on Health and Well-Being of Children Overexposed to Digital Media.

2017

Previous articles published in the European Paediatric Association (EPA) pages have discussed the importance of children's well-being and its role in different areas of children's health, such as well-child care and child-friendly health care. The goal of this commentary is to raise pediatricians' awareness on the risks of children's overexposure to digital media. It is important to protect the psychological and emotional health of children from uncontrolled external influences to preserve their well-being. We also emphasize the importance of alerting parents and tutors to the risks related to the unrefrained use of the Internet.

Studies of the spontaneous motility and the effect of histamine on isolated myometrial strips of the nonpregnant human uterus: the influence of vario…

1990

We investigated the spontaneous uterine activity of isolated corpus uteri myometrial strips from 30 patients with nonpathologic myometrium, 26 patients with uterine myoma, 23 patients with uterine adenomyosis, and three patients with uterine malignancy. We also investigated the influence of these conditions on the response of the uterus to histamine. The results show the same qualitative cyclic changes of the spontaneous motility of isolated myometrial strips throughout the menstrual cycle in all the abnormalities studied. These changes are characterized by a low amplitude and high frequency of spontaneous contractions in the proliferative phase and lower frequency with higher amplitude of …

Bilateral cyclic cheek lesions related to premenstrual syndrome: a multifactorial pathogenesis?

2009

Introduction Cheek biting is a chronic, usually innocuous, self-inXicted injury that often occurs as a parafunctional habit. Case report We report an unusual case of bilateral cyclic cheek lesions in a 34-year-old woman characterized by hyperkeratinization near the biting edges of the teeth and hematic lesions accompanied by a cheek swelling sensation, without pain and burning. The lesions coincided with a premenstrual syndrome, characterized by Xuid retention Introduction Cheek biting is a chronic, usually innocuous, self-inXicted injury that often occurs as a parafunctional habit. A paradigm shift: from disease to health orientation

2006

The history of science has been described as 'paradigm shifts' of sequential overthrow, each new paradigm replacing the previous one. A paradigm is an overarching view-point which guides the articulation of theories and other activities in a particular field. In the exploration of health, two different types of approach can be identified. The pathogenic view, which has dominated the orientation of medicine over the last hundred years, focuses on disease states and underlying factors that modify the chances of entering into one of those states. The competing salutogenic view appears to be undergoing a renaissance in the new strategies of public health and health promotion, and producing theo…
