Mathematical and Coding Lessons Based on Creative Origami Activities
2019
AbstractThis paper considers how creativity and creative activities can be encouraged in regular mathematical classes by combining different teaching approaches and academic disciplines. We combined origami and paper folding with fractals and their mathematical properties as well as with coding in Scratch in order to facilitate learning mathematics and computer science. We conducted a case study experiment in a Serbian school with 15 high school students and applied different strategies for learning profound mathematical and coding concepts such as fractals dimension and recursion. The goal of the study was to employ creative activities and examine students’ activities during this process i…
Developing Primary School Students’ Formal Geometric Definitions Knowledge by Connecting Origami and Technology
2019
In this paper, we present opportunities with the uses of origami and technology, in our case GeoGebra, in teaching formal geometric definitions for fifth-grade primary school students (11-12yrs). Applying origami in mathematical lessons is becoming to be recognized as a valuable tool for improving students’ mathematical knowledge. In previous studies, we developed origami and technology activities for high-school mathematics, but we wanted to explore if such approach would work in primary school as well. For this reason, we chose a flat origami model оf the crane and we used this model to introduce students to basic geometrical notions and definitions, such as points, lines, intersections o…
Ideas for using GeoGebra and Origami in Teaching Regular Polyhedrons Lessons
2018
The approach of combining GeoGebra and origami is well accepted among students in the school "Petro Kuzmjak" where it is used to teach geometry lessons. This article elaborates on how to introduce students (upper elementary and high school students, age 14-18) to Platonic solids and their properties through combination of GeoGebra and origami activities. Some of the important mathematical concepts related to these well-known geometrical solids can be explained to students applying hands-on activities along with educational software. peerReviewed
Conductivity measurements of DNA TX tile and origami structures
2011
Tässä tutkielmassa on tutkittu kahden erilaisen itsejärjestyvän DNA-rakenteen sähkönjohtavuutta nanomittakaavassa. Ensimmäinen rakenteista on suorakaiteenmuotoinen kaksiulotteinen DNA-levy kooltaan noin 70×100 nm2 toisen ollessa selvästi kapeampi, noin 10×60 nm2. Suurin ero rakenteiden välillä on valmistusmenetelmä: isompi rakenne on valmistettu origamitekniikalla ja pienempi niin sanottua tiilimenetelmää käyttäen. Molekyylielektroniikan kannalta DNA:n sähkönjohtavuus on oleellinen asia, sillä DNA on itsejärjestäytymisominaisuuksiensa vuoksi osoittautunut hyvin lupaavaksi molekyyliksi: yksinkertaisten nanoskaalan laitteiden valmistus käyttäen DNA-pohjaisia menetelmiä on jo mahdollista. Työs…
A spatial origin‐destination approach for the analysis of local tourism demand in Italy
2023
The article assesses the competitiveness of tourist destinations, while accounting for spatial features of tourism and information on both the origin and the destination of tourists. Using a dynamic spatial panel data model with common factors within the origin-destination framework, it explores unilateral inbound tourism flows in 110 Italian regions from 23 European origin countries over the period 2004-2017. The estimation and test results confirm the need to consider this advanced spatial econometric model. In an empirical application measuring tourism resilience of regions based on this model, the results demonstrate the importance of promoting coordinated actions between neighbouring d…

Some Comparative Reflections on the Right to Know One’s Origins
2022
The issue focuses on a family law topic, the right to know one’s origins, to examine it in some different cases, as adoption or assisted reproduction, in relation to the right to a private life, to show how “roots and space” can shape the different amplitude of individual rights in different legal systems. Despite the national and international recognition of this fundamental right, important disparities remain in the enforcement of it between international regimes and the national implementations of these regimes, as consequence of the gradual adaptation process of the right to know origins to fit the context of national legal frameworks with diverse local, political and social cultures.
Heart Rate Variability Monitoring During Strength and High-Intensity Interval Training Overload Microcycles
2019
Objective: In two independent study arms, we determine the effects of strength training (ST) and high-intensity interval training (HIIT) overload on cardiac autonomic modulation by measuring heart rate (HR) and vagal heart rate variability (HRV). Methods: In the study, 37 well-trained athletes (ST: 7 female, 12 male; HIIT: 9 female, 9 male) were subjected to orthostatic tests (HR and HRV recordings) each day during a 4-day baseline period, a 6-day overload microcycle, and a 4-day recovery period. Discipline-specific performance was assessed before and 1 and 4 days after training. Results: Following ST overload, supine HR, and vagal HRV (Ln RMSSD) were clearly increased and decreased (small …
Oxymetazoline modulates proinflammatory cytokines and the T‐cell stimulatory capacity of dendritic cells
2007
The nasal decongestant oxymetazoline (OMZ) is frequently used in the topical treatment of rhinitis/sinusitis. As proinflammatory cytokines play a critical role in the development and maintenance of local inflammation, the aim of this study was to investigate the influence of OMZ on immune cells in order to diminish the mucosal infiltration of the nose. Peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) from buffy coats of healthy volunteers were isolated and stimulated in the presence or absence of OMZ. In addition, monocyte-derived dendritic cells (DC) were generated and different concentrations of OMZ were added. DC phenotype and their T-cell stimulatory properties were analysed. The vasoactive su…
