Technical English for agriculture

2021

As the world goes global, the agricultural business needs to move across frontiers and oceans. Food, raw and processed, is regularly transported across continents. As space is no longer a limit for food trade and human nutrition, language cannot represent a barrier to this continuous exchange. In the last 60 years, English has been taking a foothold as the primary language for world trade and the exchange of agricultural goods is no exception. Agricultural sciences embrace a large number of disciplines, from botany to environmental physiology, from soil science to meteorology, from plant propagation to cultural management, from soil management to pest control, from field crops to animal husb…

Soil inoculation with symbiotic microorganisms promotes plant growth and nutrient transporter genes expression in durum wheat

2015

In a field experiment conducted in a Mediterranean area of inner Sicily, durum wheat was inoculated with plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR), with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF), or with both to evaluate their effects on nutrient uptake, plant growth, and the expression of key transporter genes involved in nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) uptake. These biotic associations were studied under either low N availability (unfertilized plots) and supplying the soil with an easily mineralizable organic fertilizer. Regardless of N fertilization, at the tillering stage, inoculation with AMF alone or in combination with PGPR increased the aboveground biomass yield compared to the uninocula…

Magnetic susceptibility spatial distribution as an indicator of soil pollution in the area of Opole city = Rozkład przestrzenny podatności magnetyczn…

2018

Magnetometria glebowa, polegająca na pomiarze podatności magnetycznej wierzchniej warstwy gleby, jest bardzo przydatną i coraz powszechniej stosowaną techniką monitorowania stanu gleb objętych wpływem antropopresji. Jak wynika z danych literaturowych, metoda ta wymaga dalszego udoskonalania, szczególnie w zakresie technik obrazowania danych magnetometrycznych. Celem badań była ocena przekształceń magnetycznych gleb na terenie miasta Opola (woj. opolskie) z zastosowaniem magnetometrii glebowej oraz trzech technik interpolacji danych magnetometrycznych (naturalnego sąsiedztwa NN, ważonych odwrotnych odległości IDW oraz krigingu zwykłego OK). Dane zostały zgromadzone podczas pomiarów terenowyc…

Literacka próba budzenia tożsamości narodowej Białorusinów. Uładzimir Karatkievič. Życie i droga twórcza

2016

The article aims to present life and work of an outstanding Belarusian writer – Uladzimir Karatkievich (1930–1984). Although the writer is one of the most prominent creators of the Belarusian literature, he is not widely known in Poland. Moreover, only a few of his works have been translated into Polish. Uladzimir Karatkievich was one of the most talented writers in the history of his nation. First of all, he is known as an author of historical novels. He was also an excellent playwright, a literary critic, a historian, a translator and a talented poet. Due to many historical and political reasons he has become for Belarusian literature like Henryk Sienkiewicz or Ignacy Kraszewski for the P…

Mind the gap: Treefalls as drivers of parental trade-offs

2015

Abstract Tree‐fall gaps are small‐scale disturbances whose formation, colonization, and role in forest dynamics are well documented, but whose effects on animal ecology are still greatly overlooked, except for studies comparing species richness of gaps 6+ months old to that in the closed canopy. Other factors associated with the invasion of fresh tree‐fall gaps such as animal breeding adaptations have been largely neglected. I studied the immediate (within hours and days) arrival of the poison frog Dendrobates tinctorius in new tree‐fall gaps to examine the dynamics of their invasion in relation to tadpole rearing. I found that rearing sites are occupied sooner and tadpoles deposited at hig…

Apparent and quantitative loss of fatty acids and triacylglycerols at frying temperatures

2012

[EN]: Olive and sunflower oils were heated at 180 °C for 5, 10 and 15 hours with the aim of defining the changes in the contents of fatty acid methyl esters (FAME) and triacylglycerols (TAG) under frying conditions. Differences between apparent and real loss of FAME or TAG are defined for an adequate interpretation of the changes taking place at high temperature. Such differences depend on the expression of the results and frequently result in erroneous conclusions. Results showed that from the normalized composition it could be deduced that only the most unsaturated FAME (C18:2) or TAG containing it was significantly altered. However, quantitative data indicated that all the unsaturated FA…

Eläinten puolustajat : suomalaisen eläinoikeusaktivismin muuttuva poliittinen tyyli ja toiseus

2016

This study examines animal rights activism in Finland. Since 1995, when the first public acts of animal liberation in Finland took place, animal rights activists have made up one of the most debated Finnish social movements. In this research, I study animal rights activism as a phenomenon and as a form of political action. The study approaches the issue by applying the concepts of political style and cultural othering as analytical tools. The study is empirical and bases its analysis on qualitative methodology, especially content analysis. I interviewed activists in 2000-2002 and again in 2015. I have also done observation at demonstrations as well as some campaign analysis. In the five art…
