Oligodendrocytes in mouse corpus callosum are coupled via gap junction channels formed by connexin47 and connexin32.

2010

According to previously published ultrastructural studies, oligodendrocytes in white matter exhibit gap junctions with astrocytes, but not among each other, while in vitro oligodendrocytes form functional gap junctions. We have studied functional coupling among oligodendrocytes in acute slices of postnatal mouse corpus callosum. By whole-cell patch clamp we dialyzed oligodendrocytes with biocytin, a gap junction-permeable tracer. On average 61 cells were positive for biocytin detected by labeling with streptavidin-Cy3. About 77% of the coupled cells stained positively for the oligodendrocyte marker protein CNPase, 9% for the astrocyte marker GFAP and 14% were negative for both CNPase and GF…

Olive mill wastewaters decontamination based on organo-nano-clay composites

2019

Abstract Green composites for environmental applications were successfully prepared by intercalation of the biosurfactant Quillaja saponin onto montmorillonite mineral clay on varying pH and surfactant/clay ratio. Equilibrium adsorption isotherms were constructed and the system was characterized by performing TGA and XRD analyses. The efficiency of the surfactant-modified clay in the removal of the organic content present in olive mill wastewaters (OMW) was evaluated by means of spectrophotometric measurements. The interest for this cogent issue comes from the consideration that, despite their high pollutant content, OMW can be considered as a potential resource of several organic compounds…

Preparation and mechanical properties of intercalated PP/OMMT nanocomposites

2007

The preparation of polymer nanocomposites by melt compounding polypropylene (PP) with organically modified montmorillonite using maleic anhydride modified PP as compatibilizer is described. Compositions with organomontmorillonite content 0, 5, 10 wt.% were prepared and tested. Data on the influence of organomontmorillonite content on the tensile stress?strain curves, elastic modulus, strength, and ultimate elongation of the nanocomposites are obtained. The concentration dependences of elastic properties of materials with differently oriented plate like nanoparticles analyses taking into account hierarchical structure features of nanocomposites is considered. Theoretical analysis results are…

Editor's Choice - Frailty and the management of patients with acute cardiovascular disease:A position paper from the Acute Cardiovascular Care Associ…

2018

Frailty is increasingly seen among patients with acute cardiovascular disease. A combination of an ageing population, improved disease survival, treatable long-term conditions as well as a greater recognition of the syndrome has accelerated the prevalence of frailty in the modern world. Yet, this has not been matched by an expansion of research. National and international bodies have identified acute cardiovascular disease in the frail as a priority area for care and an entity that requires careful clinical decisions, but there remains a paucity of guidance on treatment efficacy and safety, and how to manage this complex group. This position paper from the Acute Cardiovascular Care Associa…

Reduction of ICD Shock Burden by Eliminating Back-Up Pacing Induced Ventricular Tachyarrhythmias

2014

ICD Shock Reduction by Subthreshold Pacing Introduction Implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICD) may have the capacity to provoke or worsen ventricular tachyarrhythmias (VT). It has been reported that ICD shocks by itself can increase mortality. This study aimed to determine the role of back-up pacing-induced VT (PIT) in the overall ICD shock burden by avoiding pause-related ventricular back-up pacing. Methods and Results A population of 550 single-chamber ICD patients was studied. Of them, 17 (3%, 69 ± 16 years, 14 male) patients had documented episodes of PIT. A total of 431 VT episodes were documented including 89 (21%) due to PIT. In 3 patients, VT events were exclusively PITs. Aft…

Contribution of molecular analyses in diagnosing Marfan syndrome and type I fibrillinopathies: an international study of 1009 probands.

2008

International audience; BACKGROUND: The diagnosis of Marfan syndrome (MFS) is usually initially based on clinical criteria according to the number of major and minor systems affected following international nosology. The number of FBN1 mutation carriers, at risk of aortic complications who would not be properly diagnosed based only on clinical grounds, is of growing importance owing to the increased availability of molecular screening. The aim of the study was to identify patients who should be considered for FBN1 mutation screening. METHODS: Our international series included 1009 probands with a known FBN1 mutation. Patients were classified as either fulfilling or not fulfilling "clinical"…

Analysis of factors determining thermal changes at osteotomy site in dental implant placement - An in-vitro study

2021

Background Heat generation during osteotomy site preparation is a crucial factor that determines the success of dental implant placement. Among the factors that affect the heat generation, drilling speed, hand pressure and coolant temperature are independent variables. However, a relation between these three parameters and their optimal values required for the maximum outcome has not been studied so far. This study aims at finding out a relation between these factors in order to derive the optimum balance required, using an in vitro study. Material and methods This in vitro experiment was performed on bovine femur. A total of 72 drillings were undertaken with the aid of a physiodispenser mo…

Intraoperative cryoablation of atrial fibrillation with the old-fashioned cryode tips: a simple, effective, and inexpensive method.

2006

Nowadays atrial fibrillation is usually treated simultaneously with cardiac procedures, and new cryo-systems have been developed for performing easier and faster intraoperative ablation. However, the old cryode designs can still be useful in surgical practice and represent a more cost-effective method. In this article we present a technique using old-fashioned cryodes for intraoperative treatment of atrial fibrillation and comment on its advantages and limitations.
