Are syllables phonological units in visual word recognition?

A number of studies have shown that syllables play an important role in visual word recognition in Spanish. We report three lexical decision experiments with a masked priming technique that examined whether syllabic effects are phonological or orthographic in nature. In all cases, primes were nonwords. In Experiment 1, latencies to CV words were faster when primes and targets shared the first syllable (€ju.nas-JU.NIO) than when they shared the initial letters but not the first syllable (€jun.tu-JU.NIO). In the visual domain, Marsolek and colleagues (1999, 2008) have found support for two dissociable and parallel neural subsystems underlying object and shape recognition: an abstract-category subsystem that operates more effectively in the left cerebral hemisphere (LH), and a specific-exemplar subsystem that operates more effectively in the right cerebral hemisphere (RH). Effect of some hexahydroimidazo[1,2-c]pyrimidines in inflammatory responses involving leucocytes and macrophages.

Abstract We have studied the effects of some hexahydroimidazo[1,2-c]pyrimidine derivatives (HIPs) on leucocyte functions in-vitro and we have assayed the anti-inflammatory activity of these compounds in two models of inflammation. All HIPs inhibited the human neutrophil degranulation process and superoxide generation at concentrations in the μM range. In mouse peritoneal macrophages stimulated with lipopolysaccharide, HIP-4 and HIP-5 inhibited nitrite production without affecting prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) accumulation. Solid-phase synthesis and inhibitory effects of some pyrido[1,2-c]pyrimidine derivatives on leukocyte formations and experimental inflammation.

A number of pyrido[1,2-c]pyrimidines bearing a nitrogen, oxygen, or sulfur functionality at C-1 were synthesized on solid-phase using the iminophosphorane methodology and tested for their effects on leukocyte functions in vitro and antiinflammatory activity. Compound 5c was found to be a strong scavenger of superoxide anion and an inhibitor of chemiluminescence induced by 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol 13-acetate in human neutrophils. These pyrido[1,2-c]pyrimidines inhibited the generation of PGE(2) by COX-2 in RAW 264.7 macrophages stimulated with lipopolysaccharide. TNFα Primes Polymorphonuclear Leukocytes for an Enhanced Respiratory Burst to a Similar Extent As Bacterial Lipopolysaccharide

We examined whether preincubating polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMN) with TNF alpha would result in an enhanced respiratory burst upon subsequent stimulation by various agents. Bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS), a known primer of PMN, was used as control. We found that both LPS (0.01 to 10.0 microgram/ml) and recombinant TNF alpha (0.001 to 1.0 microgram/ml) act as direct stimulants of PMN as measured by chemiluminescence. 6-Dimethylamino 1H-pyrazolo[3,4-d]pyrimidine derivatives as new inhibitors of inflammatory mediators in intact cells.

The synthesis of 6-dimethylamino 1H-pyrazolo[3,4-d]pyrimidines substituted at positions 1 and 4, and their effects on murine macrophage and human neutrophil functions are described. Several compounds and especially 4b-6b are potent inhibitors of PGE2 generation in murine macrophages. This action is related to a direct effect on COX-2 activity without affecting the enzyme expression. Some of these compounds also inhibited COX-1 and COX-2 in human monocytes and 4b showed selectivity for COX-2 inhibition. © 2003 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

The following experiments suggest that Fo expression by peritoneal M phi may be associated with inflammation. Balb/c and CBA/J mice were given inflammatory stimuli by i.p. injection of live BCG, thioglycollate (TG), Corynebacterium parvum (CP), proteose peptone (PP), or LPS. Resistance of natural killer T cell-deficient mice to systemic Shwartzman reaction.

The generalized Shwartzman reaction in mice which had been primed and challenged with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) depends on interleukin (IL)-12-induced interferon (IFN)-gamma production at the priming stage. We examined the involvement in the priming mechanism of the unique population of Valpha14 natural killer T (NKT) cells because they promptly produce IFN-gamma after IL-12 stimulation. We report here that LPS- or IL-12-primed NKT cell genetically deficient mice were found to be resistant to LPS-elicited mortality.
