Rethinking Secular Time in Victorian England
2022
This open access book draws on conceptual resources ranging from medieval scholasticism to postmodern theory to propose a new understanding of secular time and its mediation in nineteenth-century technological networks. Untethering the concept of secularity from questions of ‘religion’ and ‘belief’, it offers an innovative rethinking of the history of secularisation that will appeal to students, scholars, and everyone interested in secularity, Victorian culture, the history of technology, and the temporalities of modernity. Knowledge engineering and semantic formalism of symbolic relations. From medieval network to web 3.0
2020
A search has always been at the center of human concerns, the one of conditions and means to represent, to control well, and to communicate effectively with his environment. While technological advances and electronic gadgets such as smartphones, the Web, and online social networks currently allow addressing this concern, it has not always been the case. Our works in this thesis treat medieval documents considered as a medium of communication and as a model of the social network in the Middle Ages. These documents are called medieval illuminations. They were luxurious paintings used in that time to represent the environment and ideal world for elites such as prince, duke, etc. Those paintin…
Isolation and characterisation of autochthonous Saccharomyces cerevisiae from 'Pago' Merlot wines of Utiel-Requena (Spain) origin
2022
[EN] Background and Aims To achieve both the control of the undesirable yeasts and the improvement of the characteristics of Merlot 'Pago' wines, Saccharomyces cerevisiae yeast diversity was investigated in a spontaneous 'Pago' Merlot fermentation from the Utiel-Requena region (Spain). Isolates of S. cerevisiae were characterised by a holistic procedure using the same Merlot grape must from which they were isolated. Methods and Results Yeasts were identified by internal transcribed spacer analysis and typed by HinfI mDNA restriction analysis. Growth and metabolic characteristics of the isolates were determined by laboratory-scale (50 L) fermentations of Merlot must and the composition of th…

Predicting effective aquaculture in subtropical waters: A dynamic energy budget model for the green lipped mussel, Perna viridis
2018
Abstract The green lipped mussel, Perna viridis, is an important aquaculture species throughout the Indo-Pacific region where production is often impacted by environmental degradation. To predict the impacts and mitigate against environmental problems due to various kinds of anthropogenic pollution, such as heavy metals and eutrophication, on P. viridis aquaculture a Dynamic Energy Budget (DEB) model was constructed. By integrating species-specific parameters and regional-specific environmental data the DEB model determined how the life history traits of P. viridis respond to changing environmental conditions. Using various levels of basal maintenance costs and food availability to elucidat…
Parameterisation of bivalve functional traits for mechanistic eco-physiological dynamic energy budget (DEB) models
2013
Mechanistic models such as those based on dynamic energy budget (DEB) theory are emergent ecomechanics tools to investigate the extent of fitness in organisms through changes in life history traits as explained by bioenergetic principles. The rapid growth in interest around this approach originates from the mechanistic characteristics of DEB, which are based on a number of rules dictating the use of mass and energy flow through organisms. One apparent bottleneck in DEB applications comes from the estimations of DEB parameters which are based on mathematical and statistical methods (covariation method). The parameterisation process begins with the knowledge of some functional traits of a tar…
Temporal dynamic of biofilms enhances the settlement of the central-1 Mediterranean reef2 builder Dendropoma cristatum (Biondi, 1859)
2021
Research on marine invertebrate settlement provides baseline knowledge for restoration technique implementation, especially for biogenic engineers with limited dispersion ability. Previously, we determined that the maturity of a biofilm strongly enhances the settlement of the vermetid reef-builder Dendropoma cristatum . In order to elucidate which biofilm features support a higher settlement of this species, we analyse the structure and composition of a marine biofilm over time, through microscopic observations, eukaryotic and prokaryotic fingerprinting analyses and 16S rDNA Illumina sequencing. The vermetid settlement temporal increase matched with the higher biofilm extent on the substrat…
