Familial combined hyperlipidemia (FCHL) is the most frequent genetic hyperlipidemia. FHCL is associated with high prevalence of cardiovascular disease. In this study we selected 208 patients affected by FHCL and evaluated the efficacy of the lipid-lowering statin therapy using different statins available in the market. The results show that the percent of patients reaching the therapeutic goal ranges from 19.7 % (LDL-C <100 mg/dL) to 50.9% (LDL-C <130 mg/dL) and from 16.9 % (non HDL-C <130 mg/dL) to 46.6 % (non HDL-C <160 mg/dL) according to the different ATPIII-NCEP-guidelines cut offs. In conclusion the statin monotherapy is only partly effective in the management of FCHL therapy

Vascular structure of the earliest shark teeth

Here we use synchrotron tomography to characterise dental vasculature in the oldest known tooth-bearing sharks, Leonodus carlsi Mader, 1986 and Celtiberina maderi Wang, 1993. Three dimensional reconstruction of the vascular system and microstructure of both taxa revealed a complex and dense network of canals, including horizontal, ascending and secondary bifurcated canals, as well as histological features consistent with an osteodont histotype. Odontogenic calcificant cystic tumor : a report of two clinical cases

Odontogenic Calcificant Cystic Tumor (OCCT) is an infrequent injury. It arises from odontogenic epithelial rests present in the maxilla, jaw or gum. Gorlin and col. described the OCCT for first time as an own pathological entity in 1962. Clinically, the OCCT represents 1% of the odontogenic injuries. It is possible to be found from the first decade to the eighth decade. It affects in same proportion the maxilla and the jaw, being the most common in the dented zones, with greater incidence in the first molar area.
