Electrical conductivity of glass fiber-reinforced plastic with nanomodified matrix for damage diagnostic
2021
The electrical conductivity of glass fiber-reinforced plastic (GFRP) with epoxy matrix modified by multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) was studied. The electrical conductivity of nanomodified lamina and multi-layered GFRP was investigated on several levels using a structural approach. Components of the electrical conductivity tensor for unidirectional-reinforced monolayer were calculated similarly as in micromechanics using the conductivity of the nanomodified matrix. The electrical conductivity of multilayer composite was calculated using laminate theory and compared with values measured experimentally for various fiber orientation angles. Calculated and experimental data were in good agree…
Beyond early: Decision support for improved typhoon warning systems
2015
International audience; Warnings can help prevent damage and harm if they are issued timely and provide information that help responders and population to adequately prepare for the disaster to come. Today, there are many indicator and sensor systems that are designed to reduce disaster risks, or issue early warnings. In this paper we analyze the different systems in the light of the initial decisions that need to be made in the response to sudden onset disasters. We outline challenges of current practices and methods, and provide an agenda for future research. To illustrate our approach, we present a case study of Typhoon Haiyan. Although meteorological services had issued warnings; relief …
Characteristics of being hospitalized as a child with a new diagnosis of type 1 diabetes: a phenomenological study of children’s past and present exp…
2015
Background: Our understanding of children and childhood has changed over the last few decades, which may have an impact on children’s conditions in hospitals. Children’s rights have been strengthened by the “Convention on the Rights of the Child” and ward regulations. The aim of this Norwegian study was to identify potential characteristics of children's lived experience of being hospitalized diagnosed with type 1 diabetes today and from a retrospective view in the period 1950–1980, despite the many obvious external changes. Methods: This study presents a further analysis of data from two previous phenomenological studies. The first had a retrospective perspective, and the second assumed a …
The marketplace vulnerability of low-income unbanked consumers : a developing country perspective
2018
Financial exclusion is recognised as an important element of socio-economic inequality where economically vulnerable groups are excluded from basic financial services. The issue of financial exclusion is mainly concentrated in the world’s developing countries. However, research on the issue of financial exclusion in the field of marketing as well as from the perspective of unbanked consumers is lacking. Although financial exclusion impedes low-income consumers’ welfare, there is a shortage of wellbeing related studies on low-income consumers in the context of developing countries. This doctoral dissertation aims to investigate the ways in which low-income unbanked consumers experience vulne…
“The Evils Which Have Arisen in My Country” : Mary Power Lalor and Active Female Landlordism during the Land Agitation
2021
The British journalist and author, Frederic Whyte, reminisced fondly about his childhood trips to County Tipperary, presenting an idealistic image of Mary Frances Power Lalor, one of the most active of Irish landowners during the later Victorian period. peerReviewed
Working the fields of big data : Using big-data-augmented online ethnography to study candidate–candidate interaction at election time
2017
The paper proposes big-data-augmented ethnography as a novel mixed-methods approach to studying political discussions in a hybrid media system. Using such empirical setup, the authors examined candidate–candidate online interaction during election campaigning. Candidate–candidate interaction crossing party boundaries is scarce and occurs in the form of negative campaigning via social media, with the shaming of rival candidates and engaging in battles with them. The authors posit that ethnographic observations can be used to contextualize the computational analysis of large data sets, while computational analysis can be applied to validate and generalize the findings made through ethnography…
Kaapin ovet selällään: vuorovaikutuksen heteronormatiivisuutta rikkomassa
2014
Sukupuolivähemmistöihin kuuluvat henkilöt joutuvat elämänsä aikana päättämään useasti, millaisia omaan suuntautumiseensa liittyviä kielellisiä tekoja (perfomatiiveja) he tekevät ja miten nämä vaikuttavat heidän elämäänsä. Käytännössä seksuaalivähemmistöön kuuluvan henkilön elämä on läpi elämän kestävää tasapai…
Construction of FTAs in the fictional world of Gilmore Girls
2010
Tutkielmassa tarkastellaan amerikkalaista televisiosarjaa Gilmoren tytöt (engl. Tutkimuskysymyksen asettelu on kaksiosainen: 1.

In this article, we apply critical discourse analysis and ethnography to examine conceptionsand experiences of inclusive interaction and language use in the context of eldercare in aretirement home. Our data consist of interviews with residents, nurses and managers intwo bilingual eldercare units, as well as ethnographic observations of communication andlanguage use in these units. Our analysis focuses especially on language ideologies andmetalinguistic aspects of inclusive language in the context of eldercare. On the basis of ouranalysis, we suggest that four elements are particularly central to elderly-centric language: 1)the quality, quantity and tone of interaction; 2) the practices of …
