The effects of armed conflict on schooling in Sub-Saharan Africa

In the past decades, most of the countries in sub-Saharan Africa have been affected by armed conflicts. By means of a time-series cross-sectional (TSCS) database, we attempt to measure the impact of war on a sample of 43 countries in Africa from 1950 to 2010. These conflicts, and especially civil wars, are shown to have a strong negative effect on the educational performances of the countries studied. The rate of children not attending school, as well as secondary school enrollment rates, seems particularly sensitive to periods of conflict. La presencia de un conjunto significativo de fusayolas entre los ajuares de la necrópolis de la Edad del Hierro de Olival do Senhor dos Mártires (Alcácer do Sal, Portugal) plantea cuestiones de gran interés sobre los límites entre la función de estos elementos y su significado simbólico y escatológico. En este estudio se abordan esas cuestiones, analizando por un lado las características físicas, tecnológicas y morfológicas de las piezas, y por otro los posibles códigos simbólicos y religiosos que las convierten en elementos integrales del ajuar funerario en distintas comunidades del sur peninsular.

Influencia de la litología en los procesos de erosión en <i>badlands</i>. Los casos de Anna (Valencia) y Petrer (Alicante)

By means of experiments with simulated rainfall the hydrological and erosional behaviour of degraded surfaces (badlands) developed on two different parent materials (marls and clays) is studied. On the Keuper clays, the ponding (4'07") and runoff (6' 36") initiation is delayed, the infiltration rates (38.63 mm h<sup>-1</sup>) are high, and the runoff coefficient (11.2 % after 30 minutes and 19.4 % after 60 minutes) and the erosion rates (13 g m<sup>2</sup> h<sup>-1</sup>) are low. Online Estimation of the Mechanical Parameters of an Induction Machine Using Speed Loop characteristics and Recursive Least Square Technique

This paper presents a novel approach for estimation of mechanical parameters, inertia and friction coefficient of an Induction Machine (IM) using speed loop characteristics and Recursive Least Square (RLS) estimator. Using the 5th order dynamic equation for Induction Machine and the forgetting factor based RLS algorithm the technique herein proposed employs the speed of the machine and the torque as the inputs for the estimator. Results obtained compares the estimated parameters with the actual parameters under multiple step varying and exponentially varying scenarios. Upon analyzing the results, the validity and the effectiveness of the proposed identification technique is confirmed
