The Ptolemy and Zbăganu constants of normed spaces
2010
Abstract In every inner product space H the Ptolemy inequality holds: the product of the diagonals of a quadrilateral is less than or equal to the sum of the products of the opposite sides. In other words, ‖ x − y ‖ ‖ z − w ‖ ≤ ‖ x − z ‖ ‖ y − w ‖ + ‖ z − y ‖ ‖ x − w ‖ for any points w , x , y , z in H . It is known that for each normed space ( X , ‖ ⋅ ‖ ) , there exists a constant C such that for any w , x , y , z ∈ X , we have ‖ x − y ‖ ‖ z − w ‖ ≤ C ( ‖ x − z ‖ ‖ y − w ‖ + ‖ z − y ‖ ‖ x − w ‖ ) . The smallest such C is called the Ptolemy constant of X and is denoted by C P ( X ) . We study the relationships between this constant and the geometry of the space X , and hence with metric fix…

Impact of work aspects on communication, emotional intelligence and empathy in nursing
2019
ABSTRACT Objective: to assess the impact of the type of contract and seniority of nursing staff on their attitudes towards communication, emotional intelligence and empathy. Methods: the instruments measuring attitudes towards communication, empathy and emotional intelligence. The study sample was composed of 450 nurses from 7 hospitals. To explore the effect of the variables studied, one-factor ANOVA test, Pearson correlations and hierarchical multiple linear regression models were performed according to the type of contract. Results: there are statistically significant differences between the variables studied according to the type of contract. More specifically, the nursing staff with pe…
Agent +014 health program: gamification applied to the education of adolescents with diabetes according to the Precede-Proceed model and from a salut…
2021
Transformative Teaching and Learning Through Engaged Practice : Lecturers’ and Students’ Experiences in a University and Underserved Community Partne…
2018
peer-reviewed The Community Wellness, Empowerment, Leadership and Lifeskills (CWell) program is a two-year community-driven program developed in partnership between an underserved-community in Limerick City, and staff at the University of Limerick (UL), Ireland. This paper explores the transformative teaching and learning experiences that arose throughout the duration of the progam for the lecturers and students. Data were collected through interviews and focus groups with lecturers and students involved in the program. Students supported the notion of “learning differently” and focused around prior learning and attitude to learning, learning about learning and impact of learning. Lecturers…
Community Participation in Urban Suburbs: The Italian Case of Z.E.N. Slum of Palermo
2015
Based on Kurt Lewin’s Action Research theory, the paper focuses on an Action Research project issued in Southern Italy, in the disadvantaged suburb of Palermo (Sicily), called Z.E.N., sadly famous as a dangerous and “criminogenic” urban slum, in order to stimulate social participation and to develop social change. The principal goal was the empowerment of ordinary inhabitants, obtaining their collaboration through participation, giving them acquisition of knowledge for a real social change.
A multi-phase multi-objective genome-scale model shows diverse redox balance strategies in yeasts
2021
Yeasts constitute over 1500 species with great potential for biotechnology. Still, the yeastSaccharomyces cerevisiaedominates industrial applications and many alternative physiological capabilities of lesser-known yeasts are not being fully exploited. While comparative genomics receives substantial attention, little is known about yeasts’ metabolic specificity in batch cultures. Here we propose a multi-phase multi-objective dynamic genome-scale model of yeast batch cultures that describes the uptake of carbon and nitrogen sources and the production of primary and secondary metabolites. The model integrates a specific metabolic reconstruction, based on the consensus Yeast8, and a kinetic mod…
&ldquo;Out of the Can&rdquo;: A Draft Genome Assembly, Liver Transcriptome and Nutrigenomics of the European Sardine, <em>Sardina p<…
2018
Clupeiformes, such as sardines and herrings, represent an important share of worldwide fisheries. Among those, the European sardine (Sardina pilchardus, Walbaum 1792) exhibits significant commercial relevance. While the last decade showed a steady and sharp decline in capture levels, recent advances in culture husbandry represent promising research avenues. Yet, the complete absence of genomic resources from sardine imposes a severe bottleneck to understand its physiological and ecological requirements. We generated 69 Gbp of paired-end reads using Illumina HiSeq X Ten and assembled a draft genome assembly with an N50 scaffold length of 25579 bp and BUSCO completeness of 82.1% (Actinopteryg…

Competence Aspects of Responsible State Institutions
2014
One of the specific features of the law on IGOs relates to the fact that competence of state institutions of EU Member States for prosecution of the infringements of IGOs is envisaged within their jurisdictions. Therefore, in the case of IGOs, their infringements will be prosecuted both by right-holders of IGOs and state institutions of EU Member States. Considering these both prosecution possibilities, right-holders of IGOs have a choice either to prosecute infringements of IGOs themselves, i.e. bringing a case to a court if out-of-court settlement procedures were not successful or were not even chosen, or to apply to a state institution having competence to prosecute infringements of IGOs…
