+++

The oxydoreduction potentials are determined for a number of wines of champagne before and after the second prise de mousse fermentation.

Vocational teachers’ pathways in the course of a curriculum reform

2011

Teachers face continuous changes, many of which significantly influence their professional identities and work practices. This study investigates Finnish vocational teachers’ pathways in the course of a curriculum reform. The data were obtained by interviewing 14 vocational teachers twice, i.e. at the initial and later stages of the reform. This study used a narrative approach to analyse the interviews as whole and also to illustrate variations between teachers. The teachers were found to exhibit distinctive pathways through the reform: an empowerment pathway, a critical but adaptive pathway, an open and expectant pathway, a successful transformation pathway, and a struggling pathway. The p…

Data from: The joint evolution of the Myxozoa and their alternate hosts: a cnidarian recipe for success and vast biodiversity

2018

The relationships between parasites and their hosts are intimate, dynamic and complex; the evolution of one is inevitably linked to the other. Despite multiple origins of parasitism in the Cnidaria, only parasites belonging to the Myxozoa are characterized by a complex life cycle, alternating between fish and invertebrate hosts, as well as by exceptionally high species diversity. This inspired us to examine the history of reciprocal interactions and adaptive radiations in myxozoans and their hosts by determining the degree of congruence between their phylogenies and by timing the emergence of myxozoan lineages in relation to their hosts. Recent genomic analyses suggested a common origin of …

Data from: Food limitation constrains host immune responses to nematode infections

2016

Trade-offs in the allocation of finite-energy resources among immunological defences and other physiological processes are believed to influence infection risk and disease severity in food-limited wildlife populations. However, this prediction has received little experimental investigation. Here we test the hypothesis that food limitation impairs the ability of wild field voles (Microtus agrestis) to mount an immune response against parasite infections. We conducted a replicated experiment on vole populations maintained in large outdoor enclosures during boreal winter, using food supplementation and anthelmintic treatment of intestinal nematodes. Innate immune responses against intestinal p…

Confucian Bioethics: Informed Consent in the Context of the Traditional Chinese Worldview

2017

The text refers to bioethics in China, in particular Confucian bioethics, and shows the medicine and bioethical issues in a broader cultural context. Traditional Chinese beliefs and customs affect the conceptualization and implementation of the various bioethical problems. The aim of the article is to analyse the problem of informed consent and cultural differences in its understanding and enforcement. Due to the very difterent perception of the relationship between the individual and the group in China, compared with individualistic cultures (Western Europę, North America, Australia) Chinese bioethicists revaluated the concept of informed consent by introducing a competitive concept of com…

Determination of the Optimal Saddle Height for Leisure Cycling (P188)

2008

Several studies have been done on road racing cycling and triathlon to determine the optimal saddle height (LINF) in terms of efficiency. However, cycling is becoming nowadays not only a popular sport but also a mass mean of transport were comfort takes priority over efficiency. The aim of this study is to determine an optimal saddle height (LINF) to improve comfort in leisure cycling. Five male subjects (height mean=172.2 cm, std=1.34 cm; crotch height mean=81.25cm, std=0.88cm) tested 9 prototypes of the company ORBEA with 3 levels of LINF. The test consisted in one hour cycling in lab conditions and four different techniques were used to evaluate the LINF: 3-D movement analysis was used t…

Exploring nursing competence to care for older patients in municipal in‐patient acute care: A qualitative study

2019

Aim To identify critical aspects of nursing competence to care for older patients in the context of municipal in-patient acute care. Background An increasingly complex and advanced primary healthcare system requires attention to the extent of nursing competence in municipal services. However, competence in complex and advanced care settings must be explored using perspectives which acknowledge the complexity of nurses' performance. Design A phenomenological hermeneutic, qualitative approach with individual in-depth interviews was used. COREQ reporting guidelines have been applied. Methods A sample of eight nurses and two physicians employed in municipal in-patient acute care units (MAUs) we…

Role of FODMAPs in Patients With Irritable Bowel Syndrome.

2015

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a condition characterized by abdominal pain, bloating, flatus, and altered bowel habits. The role of dietary components in inducing IBS symptoms is difficult to explore. To date, foods are not considered a cause but rather symptom-triggering factors. Particular interest has been given to the so-called FODMAPs (fermentable oligo-, di-, and monosaccharides and polyols). We aimed to summarize the evidence from the most common approaches to manage suspected food intolerance in IBS, with a particular interest in the role of FODMAPs and the effects of a low FODMAP diet. We reviewed literature, consulting PubMed and Medline by using the search terms FODMAP(s), fru…
