Atrial fibrillation: a geriatric perspective on the 2020 ESC guidelines

2021

Key Summary Points Aim To provide a geriatric perspective on the 2020 ESC Guidelines for the diagnosis and management of atrial fibrillation developed in collaboration with the European Association of Cardio–Thoracic Surgery (EACTS). Findings While the large majority of AF patients in real life are older, frail and cognitively impaired, these are mostly excluded from clinical trials, and physicians’ attitudes often prevail over standardized algorithms. On the basis of existing evidence, we suggest that (1) opportunistic AF screening by pulse palpation or ECG rhythm strip is cost-effective, and (2) whereas advanced chronological age by itself is not a contraindication to AF treatment, a Comp…

Delivery of Health Care by Spanish Dental Hygienists in Private and Public Dental Services during the COVID-19 De-Escalation Phase (June 2020): A Cro…

2021

Background: The first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic in Spain posed a major challenge for Spanish dental professionals. The objective of this work is to describe the dental hygienists’ work status and employment patterns during the de-escalation phase in order to analyse the standards of knowledge, compliance with official recommendations, and dental activities both in the public health service and in the private sector. Material and Methods: A cross-sectional questionnaire was answered by Spanish dental hygienists via WhatsApp, Facebook, and Instagram. The questionnaire was piloted before it was distributed and carried out during June 2020. Results: Here, 517 dental hygienists were surveyed…

Comparing neurocognitive impairment in schizophrenia and bipolar I disorder using the Screen for Cognitive Impairment in Psychiatry Scale

2014

AbstractThe purpose of this study was to compare the psychometric properties of the Screen for Cognitive Impairment in Psychiatry (SCIP) when applied to patients diagnosed with schizophrenia (n=126) or bipolar I disorder (n=76), and also to compare the cognitive impairment in both samples of patients and a control group (n=83) using the SCIP and a complete neuropsychological battery. The SCIP is a scale intended to quickly and easily assess cognitive impairment in patients with severe psychiatric disorders. The results showed firstly that, in terms of internal consistency, temporal stability, dimensional structure, and criterion-referenced validity, the SCIP provides reliable and valid scor…

Management of patients with Intestinal Bowel Disease and COVID-19: A review of current evidence and future perspectives

2022

Endothelial Cell Swelling and Brain Perfusion

1997

Background: Whereas the contribution of glial swelling to no-reflow conditions in the ischemic penumbra or during reperfusion after global ischemia is widely discussed, little is known about cell volume control of endothelial cells under reperfusion conditions. Methods: The effect of extracellular acidosis-a key mediator of secondary brain damage-on cell volume was studied in the GM7373 endothelial cell line. Experiments were performed at pH = 6.0 in the presence or absence of bicarbonate, and during exposure to inhibitors of specific transport systems such as ethyl isopropyl amiloride or 4,4'-diisothiocyanatostilbene-2,2'-disulfonic acid. Results: Endothelial swelling to 111.1 ± 3.4% was f…

Cationic lipide mediated transfer of c-abl and bcr antisense oligonucleotides to immature normal myeloid cells: Uptake, biological effects and modula…

1996

Uptake and biochemical and biological effects of antisense oligodeoxynucleotides (ODN) specific for c-abl and bcr genes were studied in normal immature myeloid cells. CD34-positive cells were purified by positive and negative selection and cultured in liquid culture for 7 days. These cells were then incubated with ODNs, either alone or in combination with cationic lipids. The uptake of ODNs was enhanced by the use of cationic lipids. In addition, very low concentrations of ODNs in combination with cationic lipids were capable of specifically inhibiting the expression of the c-abl gene. In contrast, no effects were seen on the expression of bcr. However, despite the effective blocking of c-a…

Hyperglycemia and oxidative stress in cultured endothelial cells – a comparison of primary endothelial cells with an immortalized endothelial cell li…

2012

Diabetes mellitus is a major risk factor for the development of cardiovascular disease and oxidative stress plays an important role in this process. Therefore, we investigated the effects of hyperglycemia on the formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and nitric oxide/cGMP signaling in two different endothelial cell cultures. Human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC) and EA.hy 926 cells showed increased oxidative stress and impaired NO-cGMP signaling in response to hyperglycemia. The major difference between the two different cell types was the dramatic decrease in viability in HUVEC whereas EA.hy cells showed rather increased growth under hyperglycemic conditions. Starvation led to…

Oral local drug delivery and new perspectives in oral drug formulation

2012

Modern pharmaceutical science has provided us with a wide range of substances to be administered with a wide large variety of dosage forms. Local drug delivery systems have been used for a long time; in particular, for the local therapy of diseases affecting the oral cavity. Although these diseases are often extremely responsive to local therapy, the mouth often presents various difficulties in the application of topical compounds (owing to saliva and the mouth's different functions), resulting in a short retention time of dosage forms with a consequent low therapeutic efficacy. To resolve these limitations, research today concentrates on the development of bioadhesive formulations. This re…

Efficacy of protection by latex gloves during orthodontic therapy.

2000

The wearing of gloves during orthodontic or dental treatment is generally indicated for reasons of hygiene and protection against infection. This study was aimed at determining the extent and localization of perforations caused by the various orthodontic treatment techniques and interrupting the infection barrier. The impermeability was tested by means of a water retention test according to European standard EN 455, Part 1, performed on 1600 Centramed (Centramed, Koblenz), Tekmedic and SafeEx non-sterile disposable latex gloves (both by Safe Med, Switzerland) and Safe Gan latex gloves with an additional acrylate coating (also by Safe Med). The perforation rate in unused gloves was between 0…

A New Score Unveils a High Prevalence of Mild Cognitive Impairment in Patients with Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease

2021

Patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) may show mild cognitive impairment (MCI). The neurological functions affected remain unclear. The aims were to: (1) Characterize the neuropsychological alterations in NAFLD patients; (2) assess the prevalence of impairment of neurological functions evaluated; (3) develop a new score for sensitive and rapid MCI detection in NAFLD; (4) assess differences in MCI features between patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver (NAFL) and nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH); and (5) compare neuropsychological alterations in NAFLD patients with cirrhotic patients with MCI. Fifty-nine NAFLD patients and 53 controls performed psychometric tests assessin…
