Adriamycin Permeability of the Rat Bladder under Different Conditions

1983

Abstract Fifty female Sprague-Dawley rats were treated with 1.4 or 2.4 mg. adriamycin intravesically. Radioimmunological measurement of serum concentrations were performed up to 3 hours post-instillation in normal bladder mucosa, cystitis, and after electrocoagulation, under different filling conditions, as well as with the use of a detergent (Tween 80). The serum concentrations achieved were markedly higher after electrocoagulation or cystitis; altogether they reached only 1/6,000 of the instilled concentration. These studies on the rat bladder suggest that perioperative instillation of adriamycin to prevent recurrence is not contraindicated shortly before or after transurethral resection …

The lyon clinical olfactory test: validation and measurement of hyposmia and anosmia in healthy and diseased populations.

2011

; International audience; The LCOT is a self-administered test designed to assess olfactory deficits. Altogether, 525 subjects contributed to the validation. Elderly participants were well represented in this sample. In a validation study (study 1), 407 healthy and 17 anosmic volunteers between 15 and 91 years of age underwent threshold, supraliminal detection, and identification testing. Cutoff values for normosmia and hyposmia were calculated and applied in a second study in a group of patients with smell complaints and in a group of Alzheimer patients with age-matched controls. Incidence of smell deficit was estimated at 5.6% in the healthy population of study 1, and at 16% in the elder…

<p>Multimodal Evaluation of Visual Function in Geographic Atrophy versus Normal Eyes</p>

2020

Purpose To comprehensively evaluate visual function in eyes with geographic atrophy (GA) as compared to normal eyes. Patients and Methods Sixty-three eyes from 63 patients ≥50 years old were recruited for this observational study; 31 were identified as normal macular health eyes and 32 with GA. Visual function was tested with best corrected visual acuity (BCVA), low luminance visual acuity (LLVA), low luminance deficit (LLD), reading speed, macular integrity microperimetry, fixation stability, and contrast sensitivity function (CSF). Anatomic function was evaluated with spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) and fundus autofluorescence (FAF). Quality of life and vision were a…

EQ-5D-3L for Assessing Quality of Life in Older Nursing Home Residents with Cognitive Impairment

2020

Background: Quality of life (QoL) is recognized as an important patient-reported outcome measure. Assessing QoL in older people with cognitive impairment is a challenge due to discrepancies in the collection of data via proxies versus self-report. This study aimed to assess the psychometric properties of the self-reported EQ-5D (including the EQ index and EQ visual analog scale (VAS)) in nursing homes residents with cognitive impairment and to analyze its validity based on scales included in the comprehensive geriatric assessment. Methods: Cross-sectional, multicenter study analyzing the feasibility, acceptability, reliability, and validity of the EQ-5D based on 251 self-administered questi…

An automatic system for helping health consumers to understand medical texts

2015

Medical texts (reports, articles, etc.) are usually written by professionals (physicians, medical researchers, etc.) who use their own language and communication style. On the other hand, these texts are often read by health consumers (as in the case of medical reports) who do not have the same skills and vocabularies of the experts and can have difficulties in text comprehension. To help a health consumer in understanding a medical text, it would be desirable to have an automatic system that, given a text written with medical (technical) terms, translates them in simple or plain language and provides additional information with the same kind of language. We have designed such a system. It …

Cognitive impairment in patients suffering from relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis with EDSS ≤ 3.5

2003

Objectives – Previous papers have mainly demonstrated the presence and the frequency of cognitive impairment in patients suffering from relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis. The purpose of this study was to investigate subjects with the relapsing-remitting form of the disease and mild clinical disability (EDSS ≤ 3.5), so as to quantify this deficit when the illness does not yet interfere with daily living and the ability to work. Methods – Fifty patients and 50 healthy controls were submitted to a wide neuropsychological battery, including Wechsler Memory Scale – I- (WMS), Benton Visual Retention Test – D- (BVRT), Raven Coloured Progressive Matrices (RCPM), Kohs’ test (KT), Judgement of L…

Effects of juvenile hormone analogues upon soldier differentiation in the termite Reticulitermes santonensis (Rhinotermitidae, Heterotermitinae).

2018

Under the influence of juvenile hormone analogues (JHAs), termite workers are induced to differentiate into soldiers. In Reticulitermes santonensis, such induced differentiation is often incomplete, resulting in intercaste production. The morphology of the structures most affected during differentiation was analyzed descriptively and biometrically in normal workers, presoldiers, and soldiers, and in experimental intercastes. We observed that intercastes form a morphological and biometrical continuum between workers and presoldiers (presoldier intercastes), and between presoldiers and soldiers (soldier intercastes). We also compared the biochemistry of the normal individuals and of the inter…

Oral myiasis in mentally challenged patient: a case report

2011

Myiasis is the infestation of live human and vertebrate animal with Dipterous larvae which feed on host’s dead or living tissue. This condition is a result of neglected approach towards oral hygiene along with mental and physical challenges of patient. A case of oral myiasis in the maxillary anterior region in an 18 years old female with neurologic defi-cit caused by the larvae (maggots) is reported. The management consists of manual removal of larvae by topical application of turpentine oil, oral therapy with Ivermectin and surgical debridement of oral wound.

Rechte und Pflichten des Radiologen bei der Indikationsstellung und Anwendung radiologischer Verfahren

2008

A radiological examination or an interventional procedure is a medical invasion of the patient's freedom and does not constitute an offense of causing bodily harm there is a medical indication, when the patient has given consent after being adequately informed, and the intervention is carried out in accord with the valid rules of medical conduct. During the assessment of possible contraindications, the radiologist must also evaluate the indicationy, i.e., he or she must decide if the medical question can be answered by the requested radiological examination. The indication must be viewed the more critically the greater the risk for a complication is. A radiological diagnosis with the use of…
