Solution synthesis of nanoparticular binary transition metal antimonides

2011

The preparation of nanoengineered materials with controlled nanostructures, for example, with an anisotropic phase segregated structure or a regular periodicity rather than with a broad range of interparticle distances, has remained a synthetic challenge for intermetallics. Artificially structured materials, including multilayers, amorphous alloys, quasicrystals, metastable crystalline alloys, or granular metals, are mostly prepared using physical gas phase procedures. We report a novel, powerful solution-mediated approach for the formation of nanoparticular binary antimonides based on presynthesized antimony nanoparticles. The transition metal antimonides M-Sb (M = Co, Ni, Cu(2), Zn) were …

Can the introduction of Xenopus laevis affect native amphibian populations? Reduction of reproductive occurrence in presence of the invasive species

2010

Biological invasions are regarded as a form of global change and potential cause of biodiversity loss. Xenopus laevis is an anuran amphibian native to sub-Saharan Africa with strong invasive capacity, especially in geographic regions with a Mediterranean climate. In spite of the worldwide diffusion of X. laevis, the effective impact on local ecosystems and native amphibian populations is poorly quantified. A large population of X. laevis occurs in Sicily and our main aim of this work was to assess the consequences of introduction of this alien species on local amphibian populations. In this study we compare the occurrence of reproduction of native amphibians in ponds with and without X. lae…

Genistein effect on cognition in prodromal Alzheimer's disease patients : the GENIAL clinical trial

2022

Background: Delaying the transition from minimal cognitive impairment to Alzheimer’s dementia is a major concern in Alzheimer’s disease (AD) therapeutics. Pathological signs of AD occur years before the onset of clinical dementia. Thus, long-term therapeutic approaches, with safe, minimally invasive, and yet efective substances are recommended. There is a need to develop new drugs to delay Alzheimer’s dementia. We have taken a nutritional supplement approach with genistein, a chemically defned polyphenol that acts by multimodal specifc mechanisms. Our group previously showed that genistein supplementation is efective to treat the double transgenic (APP/PS1) AD animal model. Methods: In this…

Anaerobic respiration of Bacillus macerans with fumarate, TMAO, nitrate and nitrite and regulation of the pathways by oxygen and nitrate

1995

In Bacillus macerans, anaerobic respiratory pathways and the regulation of facultatively anaerobic catabolism by electron acceptors were analysed. In addition to fermentative growth, B. macerans was able to grow anaerobically by fumarate, trimethylamine N-oxide, nitrate, and nitrite respiration with glycerol as donor. During growth by fumarate respiration, a membrane-bound fumarate reductase was present that was different from succinate dehydrogenase. The end product of nitrate and nitrite respiration was ammonia. No N2 or NO and only traces of N2O could be detected. O2 repressed the activity of nitrate and fumarate reductases and the fermentation of glucose, presumably at the transcription…

Comparison of Three Techniques for Lipid Removal from Seal Blubber: Gel Permeation, Acid Treatment, and Dialysis with Semipermeable Membrane

2000

Abstract Harbor seal blubber samples were analyzed for PCDD/Fs and PCBs by splitting the initial extract into three aliquots and applying three different techniques for lipid removal (the first step of sample cleanup methodology for GC-HRMS analysis): gel permeation chromatography (GPC), sulfuric acid treatment, and dialysis through semipermeable membrane. Correlation coefficients of analyte concentrations obtained from three sets of replicate samples ranged from 0.965 to 0.994. In addition, a number of seal blubber samples were processed without pre-extraction using only the dialysis technique. The analyte concentrations in these samples correlated well with the analyte concentrations obta…

Preconcentration of aluminium by micellar-enhanced ultrafiltration

1993

Abstract Traces of aluminium were preconcentrated in water samples by forming a complex with lumogallion, and successfully accumulated in the micellar phase obtained from cationic or non-ionic surfactants and filtered through 10 000 molecular weight cut-off ultrafiltration membranes. Studies indicated that, at pH 5.9, with 1 X 10 −3 M lumogallion and 2 X 10 −2 M cetyltrimethylamonium bromide, quantitative retention of aluminium present at μg ml −1 concentration levels was achieved. A micellar-enhanced fluorimetric procedure was employed to analyse the permeate solutions, whereas nitrous oxide-acetylene flame atomic emission spectrometry was used to determine aluminium in the retentate. The …

Attenuated Total Reflection-Fourier transform infrared analysis of the fermentation process of pineapple

2005

Abstract A direct and reagent free procedure has been developed to monitor the fermentation process of pine apple nectar using Attenuated Total Reflectance Fourier-transform mid-infrared spectrometry (FT-IR) and multivariate analysis. A classical 4 2 design for standards was employed for calibration using the information in the spectral range from 907 to 1531 cm −1 of the first order derivative spectra after mean centering of infrared data. The root mean square error of calibration (RMSEC) of 0.040, 0.021, 0.063 and 0.074% w/w were obtained for glucose, fructose, saccharose and ethanol, respectively, and a mean relative validation error of 2.9, 2.1, 2.6 and 3.6% was achieved for glucose, fr…

Ultra high performance liquid chromatography-time-of-flight high resolution mass spectrometry in the analysis of hexabromocyclododecane diastereomers…

2014

An efficient ultra high performance liquid chromatography (UHPLC)-time-of-flight high resolution mass spectrometry (TOF-HRMS) method was elaborated for the determination of hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD) diastereomers in fish samples and compared against UHPLC-Orbitrap-HRMS and UHPLC-triple quadrupole (QqQ) tandem MS (MS/MS) techniques. The TOF-HRMS analyzer was operated at high resolution (>10000 full width at half maximum (FWHM)) with scanning the m/z range from 600 to 700, to achieve picogram quantitation limits. The effects of various operational parameters on the instrumental response were systematically investigated. Evaluation of the influence of sample clean-up procedure steps on sig…

Investigation on sol–gel synthesized Ag-doped TiO2 cermet thin films

2005

Abstract Undoped TiO 2 and Ag–TiO 2 (up to 23 at.% Ag) cermet thin films and polycrystalline powders have been prepared by sol–gel process. Their structure, composition, surface morphology and optical properties have been investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), differential thermal analysis (DTA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) and ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy (UV–VIS spectroscopy). It has been observed that while Ag does not form a solid solution with TiO 2 , it promotes the anatase to rutile phase transformation. The transformation temperature decreases from 827 °C for undoped TiO 2 to about 650 °C fo…
