Cultural and communicational traits of oral health care: results of a Finnish case study.

2006

This paper aims to describe the cultural and communicational traits of Finnish oral health care. First, employees' views and experiences regarding their organization and their position within it are investigated and, second, relations between different individual and organizational factors are analyzed. Finally, a conceptual framework of organizational coherence is constructed. The paper shows that data collection (n = 58, 84 percent response rate) was carried out in 2002 at a Finnish dental clinic by using a semi-structured questionnaire. The data were analyzed statistically by using, among other things, non-parametric tests and a structural equation model (LISREL) and qualitatively by usin…

Efficacy and safety of lomitapide in homozygous familial hypercholesterolaemia: the pan-European retrospective observational study

2021

Abstract Aims Lomitapide is a lipid-lowering agent indicated as an adjunct therapy for adult homozygous familial hypercholesterolaemia (HoFH). This study evaluated the medium-term effectiveness and safety of lomitapide in a large cohort of HoFH patients in Europe. Methods and results In a multicentre retrospective, observational study including 75 HoFH patients treated with lomitapide in a real-world clinical setting from 9 European countries, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) changes, adverse events (AEs), and major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) were assessed. After a median 19 months (interquartile range 11–41 months) of treatment with a mean dosage of 20 mg of lomitapide…

Emotional eating as a mediator between anxiety and cholesterol in population with overweight and hypertension

2016

Although the relationship between cholesterol and mood states (especially anxiety) has been well studied, few researches have included the role of eating styles in this relationship. This study explored the associations among eating styles, negative emotional symptoms, and levels of cholesterol (and other medical variables) in a population with hypertension and overweight or obesity, analyzing the possible mediation mechanisms involved. A cross-sectional study was conducted in 68 adults with hypertension and overweight/obesity, and stepwise multiple regression analysis and mediation analyses were carried out to test the hypothesis that eating styles mediate the relationship between negative…

Cytokeratin-18 fragments predict treatment response and overall survival in gastric cancer in a randomized controlled trial

2018

Background:Gastric cancer is common malignancy and exhibits a poor prognosis. At the time of diagnosis, the majority of patients present with metastatic disease which precludes curative treatment. Non-invasive biomarkers which discriminate early from advanced stages or predict the response to treatment are urgently required. This study explored the cytokeratin-18 fragment M30 and full-length cytokeratin-18 M65 in predicting treatment response and survival in a randomized, placebo-controlled trial of advanced gastric cancer. Methods:Patients enrolled in the SUN-CASE study received sunitinib or placebo as an adjunct to standard therapy with leucovorin (Ca-folinate), 5-fluorouracil, and irinote…

Lomitapide affects HDL composition and function

2016

Abstract Background Lomitapide reduces low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-C) but also high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C) levels. The latter may reduce the clinical efficacy of lomitapide. We investigated the effect of lomitapide on HDL-C levels and on cholesterol efflux capacity (CEC) of HDL in patients with homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (HoFH). Methods and results Four HoFH patients were treated with increasing dosages of lomitapide. Lomitapide decreased LDL-C (range −34 to −89%). Total HDL-C levels decreased (range −16 to −34%) with a shift to buoyant HDL. ABCA1-mediated CEC decreased in all patients (range −39 to −99%). The changes of total, ABCG1- and SR-BI-me…

Role clarity, fairness, and organizational climate as predictors of sickness absence: a prospective study in the private sector.

2005

Aims: The majority of the research on the effects of the psychosocial work environment on sickness absenteeism has focused on components of job strain and social support among public sector employees without stratification by socioeconomic status. The authors examined less-studied work-related psychosocial predictors of sickness absence in the private sector by socioeconomic status. Methods: Questionnaire data on psychosocial factors at work were used to predict the rates of recorded short (1 - 3 days), long (4 - 21 days), and very long (over 21 days) sickness absences among 3,850 white- and blue-collar male and female employees in a large-scale enterprise. Multivariate Poisson regression …

Four Wellbeing Patterns and their Antecedents in Millennials at Work

2018

Literature suggests that job satisfaction and health are related to each other in a synergic way. However, this might not always be the case, and they may present misaligned relationships. Considering job satisfaction and mental health as indicators of wellbeing at work, we aim to identify four patterns (i.e., satisfied-healthy, unsatisfied-unhealthy, satisfied-unhealthy, and unsatisfied-healthy) and some of their antecedents. In a sample of 783 young Spanish employees, a two-step cluster analysis procedure showed that the unsatisfied-unhealthy pattern was the most frequent (33%), followed by unsatisfied-healthy (26.6%), satisfied-unhealthy (24.8%) and, finally, the satisfied-healthy patter…

Effects of phytosterol ester-enriched low-fat milk on serum lipoprotein profile in mildly hypercholesterolaemic patients are not related to dietary c…

2010

Phytosterols (PS) are recommended to reduce LDL-cholesterol. However, the influence of cholesterol and fat intake on the lipid-lowering effect of PS in mildly hypercholesterolaemia is unclear. Thus, the aim of the present study was to evaluate whether the efficacy of PS is related to the composition of saturated fat and dietary cholesterol intake. Additionally, serum carotenoid content was analysed to evaluate to what extent it was undermined by PS. This was a 3-month randomised, parallel trial with a three-arm design. Patients were divided into three groups: healthy diet (n 24), healthy diet + PS (n 31) and free diet + PS (n 29), receiving 2 g/d of PS. Healthy and free diets were character…

Homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia with severe involvement of the aortic valve—A sibling‐controlled case study on the efficacy of lipoprotein a…

2020

Background Homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (hoFH) can cause severe atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) in early infancy. Diagnosis and initiation of effective lipid-lowering therapy (LLT) are recommended as early as possible to prevent ASCVD-related morbidity and mortality. Methods The clinical courses of a pair of siblings with an identical hoFH genotype, who exhibited major similarities of their clinical phenotype were analyzed in a case-control fashion including the family. Results The older sibling was diagnosed with hoFH at the age of 4. Untreated LDL-cholesterol (LDL-C) was 17 mmol/L (660 mg/dL). LLT including lipoprotein apheresis (LA) was initiated and has been s…

Reduced penetrance of autosomal dominant hypercholesterolemia in a high percentage of families: importance of genetic testing in the entire family.

2011

Abstract Background Autosomal dominant hypercholesterolemias (ADHs) are characterised by increased plasma levels of total and LDL cholesterol, predisposing to premature atherosclerosis. ADHs comprise several diseases with undistinguishable phenotype, caused by mutations in different genes: LDLR, APOB and PCSK9. Genetic studies are usually performed in patients with altered cholesterol levels. However, some persons carrying pathogenic mutations are normocholesterolemic and there are no further studies about this subject. We have studied the frequency of families and individuals carrying ADH mutations who do not present the disease in Spanish population. Methods We have analysed genes known t…
