Modulation of right motor cortex excitability without awareness following presentation of masked self-images.

2004

The neural substrates of self-awareness have been studied with a variety of neurophysiological and behavioral tools. In the present study, unconscious modulation of corticospinal excitability following presentation of self-images was probed with transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). TMS-induced motor evoked potentials (MEP) were collected from the contralateral first dorsal interosseus (FDI) muscle while subjects viewed masked pictures of their own face. MEP amplitudes were compared to those obtained when pictures of strangers were masked. Masked self-images induced a relative increase in corticospinal excitability when TMS was applied to the right primary motor cortex. These results dem…

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in exhaled breath as a marker of hypoxia in multiple chemical sensitivity

2021

Abstract In the history of diagnostics, breath analysis was one of the first method used until the breakthrough of biochemical testing technology. Today, breath analysis has made a comeback with the development of gas analyzers and e‐noses, demonstrating its power in its applicability for diagnosing a wide range of diseases. The physical basis of multiple chemical sensitivity (MCS), an emerging environmental disease, is difficult to understand because it is based on the scenario of chronic hypoxia, with a complex of chemical compounds that trigger the syndrome and result in multiple symptoms. The aim of this study was to investigate MCS by analyzing exhaled volatile organic compounds (VOCs)…

Immunologic findings in workers formerly exposed to 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin and its congeners

1998

One hundred ninety-two workers in a German pesticide factory who were exposed to polychlorinated dibenzodioxins and -furans (PCDD/PCDF) were investigated for former and present diseases and laboratory changes of the immune system. Moreover, in a subgroup of 29 highly exposed and 28 control persons, proliferation studies were performed. In addition to assays such as blood count, immunoglobulins, serum electrophoresis, monoclonal bands, surface markers, autoantibodies, and lymphocyte proliferation, two new methods, the rise of tetanus antibody concentration after vaccination and the in vitro resistance of lymphocytes to chromate, were used to diagnose the morphologic and functional state of t…

Two-year outcome in first-episode psychosis treated according to an integrated model. Is immediate neuroleptisation always needed?

2000

SummaryIn this multicentre study the two-year outcome of two groups of consecutive patients (total N = 106) with first-episode functional non-affective psychosis, both treated according to the ‘need-specific Finnish model’, which stresses teamwork, patient and family participation and basic psychotherapeutic attitudes, was compared. No alternative treatment facilities were available in the study sites. The two study groups differed in the use of neuroleptics: three of the sites (the experimental group) used a minimal neuroleptic regime whilst the other three (the control group) used neuroleptics according to the usual practice. Total time spent in hospital, occurrence of psychotic symptoms …

Automated Determination of Fluvoxamine in Plasma by Column-Switching High-Performance Liquid Chromatography

1992

Abstract A column-switching system with high-performance liquid-chromatographic separation and ultraviolet detection is described for automated determination of fluvoxamine in human plasma or serum. Samples were injected and the drug was retained in a clean-up column [20 x 4.6 mm (i.d.)] filled with C8 reversed-phase material (10-micron particles). After unwanted material was washed out, the drug was eluted and separated with an analytical chromatography column, 4.6 x 250 mm (i.d.), filled with Nucleosil 100 CN (5-micron particles) with an acetonitrile:methanol:0.01 mol/L phosphate buffer eluent (188:578:235 by vol) at a flow rate of 1.5 mL/min for < 20 min and detected by spectromet…

Automated Determination of Dextromethorphan and Its Main Metabolites in Human Plasma by High-Performance Liquid Chromatography and Column Switching

1996

An automated column-switching technique coupled to isocratic high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with fluorescence detection was developed for simultaneous determination of dextromethorphan and its three major metabolites, dextrorphan, hydroxymorphinan, and methoxymorphinan. After cleavage of conjugates by incubation with glucuronidasearylsulfatase at 37 degrees C for 15 h, plasma samples were injected directly into the HPLC system. Dextromethorphan and metabolites were retained on a cleanup column (10 x 4.6 mm internal diameter [ID]) filled with cyanopropyl (CN) material (Hypersil CPS, 10-microns article size) while interfering proteins and lipids were washed to waste. After colu…

Detection of gamma-hydroxybutyrate in hair: Validation of GC–MS and LC–MS/MS methods and application to a real case

2012

A gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and a liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) method were validated for quantifying endogenous and exogenous hair concentrations of gamma-hydroxybutyrate (GHB). The GC-MS method is based on overnight extraction of 25 mg hair in NaOH at 56 °C, liquid/liquid extraction in ethylacetate and trimethylsylil derivatization; analysis is by electron ionization and single ion monitoring of three ions. The LC-MS/MS method entails a rapid digestion of 25 mg hair with NaOH at 75 °C for 40 min, liquid/liquid extraction in ethylacetate and reconstitution of the extract in the LC mobile phase; negative ion electrospray ionization and multiple…

Tumori gastrointestinali stromali: Aspetti con tomografia computerizzata multidetettore (40-strati)

2006

Purpose. The purpose of this study was to describe the findings and evaluate the role of multidetector (40-slice) computed tomography (MDCT) in the preoperative assessment of gastrointestinal stromal tumours (GISTs). Materials and methods. Thirteen patients with histologically proven GIST (size: 4-30 cm; mean: 9 cm) underwent 40-slice MDCT after the ingestion of 1,000 ml of water. Images were obtained before and 70 s after intravenous injection of 120 ml of iodinated contrast agent. Two experienced radiologists reviewed the CT findings to evaluate lesion site, size, margins, attenuation, growth pattern, enhancement pattern, ascites, lymphadenopathy, direct invasion to adjacent organs and di…

Excimer laser photorefractive keratectomy for high myopia

1995

Abstract One hundred and thirty-three eyes of 103 patients had photorefractive keratectomy with a slit scan mode excimer laser for myopia ranging from −6.00 to −22.00 diopters (D). The epithelium was removed with 20% ethanol, and the ablation was done with a tapered profile surrounding the optical zone. Patients were divided into two groups based on preoperative myopia: Group A, −6.00 D to −12.00 D (88 eyes); Group B, −12.50 D to −22.00 D (45 eyes). In Group A, mean preoperative refraction was −9.59 ± 1.79 D. Mean postoperative refraction was −0.29 ± 1.47 D at one month, −0.85 ± 1.68 D at three months, −1.17 ± 2.04 D at six months, and −0.56 ± 0.74 D at one year. Anterior stromal haze was g…
