Phantom Limb Pain in Daily Practice—Still a Lot of Work to Do!

Objectives. Effective treatment of phantom limb pain (PLP, pain felt in the part of the body of an amputated limb) is still difficult to achieve, and improved treatment is needed. It is therefore of paramount interest to understand the current practice of PLP therapy outside pain centers. Design. As a part of a nationwide survey, 537 amputees were asked 11 questions related to their treatment experiences and the pain relief. Furthermore, the patients' opinion about the quality of medical care was also asked. Results. Five hundred thirty-seven out of 1088 amputees returned the questionnaire (49.4%). Chronic subdural hematoma--craniotomy versus burr hole trepanation.

The authors present a series of more than 200 surgical procedures for chronic subdural hematoma in a 5-year-period. Clinical presentation and neurosurgical treatment were regarded with a special focus on the surgical technique. Between March 2003 and July 2008, 193 patients (113 male and 80 female, mean age 72.5 yrs [range 26–97 yrs]) suffering from chronic subdural hematoma were retrospectively analyzed. One-hundred-fifty-one craniotomies and 42 burr holes were performed. Forty-two craniotomy patients (27.8%) in contrast to 6 burr hole patients (14.3%) required surgical revision. Subthreshold low frequency repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation selectively decreases facilitation in the motor cortex

Objective: To investigate the modulatory effect of a subthreshold low frequency repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) train on motor cortex excitability. Methods: The study consisted of two separate experiments. Subjects received a 10 min long subthreshold 1Hz rTMS train. In the first experiment, (single pulse paradigm), cortical excitability was assessed by measuring the amplitude of motor evoked potentials (MEPs) before and after the rTMS train. To evaluate if repeated flicker-defined form (FDF) perimetry can detect visual field (VF) defects in glaucoma suspects with normal findings in achromatic standard automated perimetry (SAP).Patients with optic nerve heads (ONHs) or retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) findings clinically suspicious for glaucoma and normal SAP were enrolled. The concept of this article is that the symbolic relationships between human beings and animals serve as a model for the relationships between the majority and the ethnic minority. We postulate that there are two representations that serve to organize these relationships between human beings and animals: a domestic and a wild one. If the domestic animal is an index of human culture, the wild animal is an index of nature which man considers himself to share with the animal. Rare sacral space-occupying lesions, their surgical management and reconstructive measures involved

Nine cases of space-occupying lesions of the sacral bone are presented. The problems of the clinical diagnosis, which in many cases comes too late, are discussed together with the indications for surgical treatment in this special group of tumours. The main clues are provided by the changes in the X-rays as well as the more modern imaging techniques (CT and MRI). The surgical technique aims at a most radical tumour removal with preservation of the sacral nerve roots, after which stabilisation of the sometimes weakened pelvic girdle may be necessary. Understanding the role of saliva in aroma release from wine by using static and dynamic headspace conditions.

The aim of this work was to determine the role of saliva in wine aroma release by using static and dynamic headspace conditions. In the latter conditions, two different sampling points (t = 0 and t = 10 min) corresponding with oral (25.5 °C) and postoral phases (36 °C) were monitored. Both methodologies were applied to reconstituted dearomatized white and red wines with different nonvolatile wine matrix compositions and a synthetic wine (without matrix effect). This study investigates how men who have sex with men (MSM) use chat and dating sites based on theories of stigma-related offline behavior and online self-disclosure. We hypothesize that hidden MSM (those who self-label as heterosexual or who hide their same-sex sexual attraction from family, friends, acquaintances, or a female romantic partner) differ from open MSM in how they behave on gay chat and dating sites and in offline gay venues. Drawing on a survey of 12,002 MSM, we show that hidden MSM tend to mask their identity on gay chat and dating sites while avoiding offline gay venues.
