The effects of agonists and antagonists of 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) receptors on the release of endogenous 5-HT from enterochromaffin cells were studied in the vascularly perfused isolated guinea-pig small intestine. The experiments were done in the presence of tetrodotoxin in order to exclude a neuronally mediated influence on 5-HT release. The 5-HT3 receptor agonist 2-methyl-5-HT increased 5-HT release, and this effect was antagonized by 1 nmol/l tropisetron. Nanomolar concentrations of tropisetron, MDL 72,222 and granisetron decreased 5-HT release. Biochemical evidence that the atypical antipsychotic drugs clozapine and risperidone block 5-HT(2C) receptors in vivo.

Clozapine and risperidone are two atypical antipsychotic drugs which bind, among other receptors, to 5-HT(2C) receptor subtypes. They inhibit the basal inositol phosphate production in mammalian cells expressing rat or human 5-HT(2C) receptors. This biochemical effect is indicative of inverse agonist activity at these receptors. There is evidence that 5-HT(2C) receptors are involved in the control of the activity of central dopaminergic system. The beta-adrenergic agonist 1 (zilpaterol) is used as production enhancer in cattle. Binding experiments of separated enantiomers on recombinant human beta(2)-adrenergic and mu-opioid receptors and functional studies showed that the (-)-1 enantiomer accounts for essentially all the beta(2)-adrenergic agonist activity and that it exhibits less affinity toward the mu-opioid receptor than (+)-1, which is a mu-opioid receptor antagonist. X-ray crystallography revealed the absolute configuration of (-)-1 to be 6R,7R.

Whether the placenta is a target tissue for estrogens and progesterone, and their putative mechanism of action, is still a controversial question in the literature. The effect of progesterone and estradiol on 3′,5′-cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) and inositol phosphates generation in human term placenta was investigated. The discovery of a temple at Agrigento in the neinties of the last Century and the recent detection of a sacred building at Lilibeo should contribute, according with their discoverers, to fill the lack of evidences concerning the Isis cult between the East and West part of Sicily. Questo saggio propone una riflessione sulla contraffazione dei prodotti alimentari, sulle frodi alimentari e sulle "agromafie" facendo riferimento, in alcuni casi, a reati di natura economica, in altri a settori del mercato controllati dalla criminalità organizzata anche attraverso la presenza di colletti bianchi. Nella prima parte del lavoro verranno individuate le modalità d'azione della criminalità economica all'interno del mercato della contraffazione e delle frodi alimentari. Nella seconda parte, saranno proposti alcuni esempi di contraffazione e di frodi alimentari.
