High-flow nasal therapy versus noninvasive ventilation in COPD patients with mild-to-moderate hypercapnic acute respiratory failure: study protocol f…
2019
Background Noninvasive ventilation (NIV) is indicated to treat respiratory acidosis due to exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Recent nonrandomized studies also demonstrated some physiological effects of high-flow nasal therapy (HFNT) in COPD patients. We designed a prospective, unblinded, multicenter, randomized controlled trial to assess the noninferiority of HFNT compared to NIV with respect to the reduction of arterial partial pressure of carbon dioxide (PaCO2) in patients with hypercapnic acute respiratory failure with mild-to-moderate respiratory acidosis. Methods We will enroll adult patients with acute hypercapnic respiratory failure, as defined by arterial…
Transcriptome profiling of citrus fruit response to huanglongbing disease.
2010
Huanglongbing (HLB) or "citrus greening" is the most destructive citrus disease worldwide. In this work, we studied host responses of citrus to infection with Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus (CaLas) using next-generation sequencing technologies. A deep mRNA profile was obtained from peel of healthy and HLB- affected fruit. It was followed by pathway and protein-protein network analysis and quantitative real time PCR analysis of highly regulated genes. We identified differentially regulated pathways and constructed networks that provide a deep insight into the metabolism of affected fruit. Data mining revealed that HLB enhanced transcription of genes involved in the light reactions of phot…
Stability-Based Model Selection for High Throughput Genomic Data: An Algorithmic Paradigm
2012
Clustering is one of the most well known activities in scien- tific investigation and the object of research in many disciplines, ranging from Statistics to Computer Science. In this beautiful area, one of the most difficult challenges is the model selection problem, i.e., the identifi- cation of the correct number of clusters in a dataset. In the last decade, a few novel techniques for model selection, representing a sharp departure from previous ones in statistics, have been proposed and gained promi- nence for microarray data analysis. Among those, the stability-based methods are the most robust and best performing in terms of predic- tion, but the slowest in terms of time. Unfortunately…
Rough Search of Vague Knowledge
2017
This chapter presents the theoretical basis of the vague knowledge search algorithmization of a rough method. It introduces some data granulation method which aggregates this data as rough sets of data or ways to search this data in the semantic networks. As a result of this method is the possibility of the rough sets description, analogically to sets in the classical theory of sets. We try to answer the question how the agent searching some knowledge can conceive the search of vague knowledge in the semantic networks: (1) if it can, accordingly to the semantic and the conceiving rules, describe the relationships between nodes in this semantic network which are identified as ways of searchi…
Numerical modelling of fatigue crack initiation of martensitic steel
2010
Numerical simulation of micro-crack initiation that is based on Tanaka-Mura micro-crack nucleation model is presented. Three improvements were added to this model. Firstly, multiple slip bands where micro-cracks may occur are used in each grain. Second improvement deals with micro-crack coalescence by extending existing micro-cracks along grain boundaries and connecting them into a macro-crack. The third improvement handles segmented micro-crack generation, where a micro-crack is not nucleated in one step like in Tanaka-Mura model, but is instead generated in multiple steps. Numerical simulation of crack-initiation was performed with ABAQUS, using a plug-in that was written specially for ha…
Numerical modelling of fatigue crack initiation and growth of martensitic steels
2010
This paper presents a numerical simulation of micro-crack initiation that is based on Tanaka-Mura micro-crack nucleation model. Three improvements were added to this model. First, multiple slip bands where micro-cracks may occur are used in each grain. The third improvement handles segmented micro-crack generation, where a micro-crack is not nucleated in one step like in Tanaka-Mura model, but is instead generated in multiple steps. High cycle fatigue testing was also performed and showed reasonably good correlation of proposed model to expe…
A new shoreline change assessment approach for erosion management strategies
2022
Shoreline evolution studies are fundamental to assess the rate of beach accretion or retreatment. In the last years, researchers developed many methods with several techniques belonging to different disciplines and backgrounds. Nowadays, the Shoreline Change Analysis (SCA) is the most widespread method to assess shoreline evolution. In fact, the SCA is needed to perform management strategies able to respond to current erosion or potential future erosion problems. This paper presents a new approach using an automatic method for SCA with accuracy and speed improvements. Indeed, in the framework of the management of coastal erosion and to develop an adaptation plan to coastal hazards it is nec…
New advances in the 3D characterization of mineral coating layers on paper
2008
Summary The surface characteristics of a large set of commercial lightweight coated paper grades are explored. The quantification of the 3D structure is revealed by atomic force microscopy, laser profilometry and X-ray microtomography. This comprehensive study demonstrates the suitability of different and modern methods for assessing critical coating layer properties, thus identifying the right tools for specific structural analyses. Based on the assessment of the top and bottom surfaces of 25 commercial lightweight coated samples, three main conclusions can be drawn: (1) the facet orientation polar angle is a function of roughness, (2) skewness did not describe the surface details affectin…
Detection of local specular gloss and surface roughness from black prints
2007
A combination of optical and tomographic imaging techniques for inspection of local surface roughness and specular gloss of black prints and coated paper are introduced. A diffractive optical-element-based glossmeter (DOG) and a low-coherence interferometer (LCI) were used to obtain local information about the print in terms of topographic and gloss maps. X-ray microcomputed tomography (μCT) was used to obtain 3D local structural information of the coated paper. Gloss and topographic maps were used to determine statistical gloss and roughness parameters. These parameters were useful when analysing the surface condition of prints and coated paper. We found an orientation-dependent gloss slop…
Electroplated Ni/Ni-Co multilayer coatings for higher corrosion-erosion resistance
2019
Erosion-corrosion behaviour of hierarchical structured hydrophobic nickel-cobalt coating, obtained by electrodeposition, was assessed. In situ electrochemical measurements were carried out to study the corrosion resistance and stability during erosion tests. The electrochemical behaviour was related to surface hydrophobicity and its hierarchical structure nature as well as its modification. The pure Ni showed the lowest erosion-corrosion resistance. A smoothing of the hierarchical structure and thus a reduction the hydrophobicity was highlighted. On the other hand, Ni-Co coating even if associated to a lower electrochemical stability showed a more stable hierarchical structure also at high …
