The Influence of Chitosan on the Oral Bioavailability of Acyclovir-a Comparative Bioavailability Study in Humans
2015
Purpose The effects of chitosan hydrochloride on the oral absorption of acyclovir in humans were studied to confirm the absorption enhancing effects reported for in vitro and rat studies, respectively. Methods A controlled, open-label, randomized, 3-phase study was conducted in 12 healthy human volunteers. Zovirax 200 mg dispersible tablets co-administered with doses of 400 and 1000 mg chitosan HCl were compared with Zovirax only. Results The expected increased absorption of acyclovir was not observed. On the contrary, mean area under the plasma concentration-time curve (AUC0-12 h) and maximal plasma concentration (Cmax) decreased following concomitant chitosan intake (1402 versus 1017 and …
Tc-99m HMPAO Cerebral Scintigraphy A Reliable, Noninvaslve Method for Determination of Brain Death
1993
To determine the usefulness of cerebral blood flow imaging for the diagnosis of brain death, 4 female and 12 male patients, aged 19 to 69 years and suffering from various intracranial lesions, were studied. In addition to neurologic examination, electroencephalographic recording, and cerebral angiography, tomographic brain scintigraphy was performed using a SPECT system with a LEAP collimator after the intravenous administration of 555 MBq Tc-99m HMPAO. The radioisotopic scanning procedure revealed no intracranial perfusion in 14 of the 16 patients. Only minimal cerebellar blood flow was seen in one patient. In another, residual right-sided supratentorial flow was initially present but abse…
Contrast-enhanced transcranial Doppler ultrasonography in the diagnosis of brain death
2013
The diagnosis of brain death (BD) is based on clinical criteria including deep coma, brain stem areflexia and apnoea. Depending on different local guidelines, confirmatory technical tests are sometimes mandatory.1 Since the 1990s, transcranial Doppler sonography (TCD) has found its place in these circumstances and fulfils most of the criteria of an ‘ideal test’ in confirming BD. To confirm intracranial circulatory arrest (CA) with Doppler sonography, typical flow patterns must be recorded in bilateral intracranial and extracranial brain-supplying arteries.2 A completely absent intracranial flow signal is not a reliable sign to determine CA because this can be due to transmission problems. I…
Differences in incidence and survival of oral cavity and pharyngeal cancers between Germany and the United States depend on the HPV-association of th…
2017
Abstract Introduction The epidemiology of squamous cell oral cavity and pharyngeal cancers (OCPC) has changed rapidly during the last years, possibly due to an increase of human papilloma virus (HPV) positive tumors and successes in tobacco prevention. Here, we compare incidence and survival of OCPC by HPV-relation of the site in Germany and the United States (US). Materials and methods Age-standardized and age-specific incidence and 5-year relative survival was estimated using data from population-based cancer registries in Germany and the US Surveillance Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) 13 database. Incidence was estimated for each year between 1999 and 2013. Relative survival for 2002…
Cisplatinum in combination with 5-fluorouracil and citrovorum factor in the treatment of advanced colorectal carcinoma.
1992
A phase II trial of citrovorum factor, 500 mg/m2/week, plus 5-fluorouracil, 400 mg/m2/week on day 1, and cisplatin, 20 mg/m2/week on day 2, was carried out in a group of 40 patients with metastatic colorectal carcinoma. A partial response with a mean duration of 8.4+ months was achieved in 24% of patients, a minimal response with a mean duration of 5.4 months was obtained in 6% of patients, and a stabilization of 6.2 months was achieved in 41%. Ten patients (29%) progressed. A 38% partial response rate was seen in patients with advanced rectal carcinoma, whereas no response was obtained in patients with colon cancer. Interestingly, 5 partial responses were seen in 12 patients pretreated wit…
Changes in cerebellar activation pattern during two successive sequences of saccades
2002
The changes in the cerebellar activation pattern of two successive fMRI scanning runs were determined for visually guided to‐and‐fro saccades in 12 healthy volunteers familiar with the study paradigm. Group and single subject‐analyses revealed a constant activation of the paramedian cerebellar vermis (uvula, tonsils, tuber, folium/declive), which reflects constant ocular motor activity in both runs. A significant decrease in activation of the cerebellar hemispheres found in the second run is best explained by either a decrease in attention or the effects of motor optimization and learning. The significant, systematic changes of the cerebellar activation pattern in two successive runs were n…
Human cerebral microcirculation and oxygen saturation during propofol-induced reduction of bispectral index †
2011
† This study investigates the effects of propofol-induced changes in bispectral index (BIS) on cerebral microcirculation and oxygenation during craniotomies. † In 2 mm cerebral depth, an increase in propofol dosage resulted in increased oxygen saturation (srvO2 )w ithout reduction of capillary venous blood flow (rvCBF). † Difference in oxygen content (avDO2) and approximated cerebralmetabolicrateofoxygen (aCMRO2) decreased with an increase in propofol dosage in 2 mm cerebral depth. † Alterations in BIS showed no effect on rvCBF, srvO2 ,a nd haemoglobin amount (rvHb) or on avDO2 or aCMRO2 in 8 mm cerebral depth. † These findings suggest that the CBF/CMRO2 ratio is altered by propofol in a re…
General Factor of Personality Questionnaire (GFPQ): Only one Factor to Understand Personality?
2010
This study proposes a psychometric approach to assess the General Factor of Personality (GFP) to explain the whole personality. This approach defends the existence of one basic factor that represents the overall personality. The General Factor of Personality Questionnaire (GFPQ) is presented to measure the basic, combined trait of the complete personality. The questionnaire includes 20 items and is constituted by two scales with 10 items each one: the Extraversion Scale (ES) and the Introversion Scale (IS). The GFPQ shows adequate internal consistency and construct validity, while the relationships with the personality factors of other models and with psychopathology are as expected. It cor…
Predicting right-wing authoritarianism via personality and dangerous world beliefs: Direct, indirect, and interactive effects
2012
In an Italian sample (N=483, 78.23% women, mean age = 27.61 years old), we used structural equation modeling with latent variables and interactions to analyze the direct, indirect, and interactive effects exerted on right-wing authoritarianism by the Big Five factors of personality and by dangerous world beliefs. Openness, Neuroticism, and Conscientiousness exerted direct effects on right-wing authoritarianism; the first two relationships were partially mediated by dangerous world beliefs. Most importantly, the relationship between dangerous world beliefs and right-wing authoritarianism was moderated by Openness: dangerous world beliefs significantly influenced right-wing authoritarianism s…
Central activation by histamine-induced itch: analogies to pain processing: a correlational analysis of O-15 H2O positron emission tomography studies
2001
The aim of this study was to identify the functional cerebral network involved in the central processing of itch and to detect analogies and differences to previously identified cerebral activation patterns triggered by painful noxious stimuli. Repeated positron emission tomography regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) measurements using O15-labeled water were performed in six healthy right-handed male subjects (mean age 32 +/- 2 years). Each subject underwent 12 sequential rCBF measurements. In all subjects a standardized skin prick test was performed on the right forearm 2 min before each rCBF measurement. For activation, histamine was applied in nine tests in logarithmically increasing con…
