Employability and Disability: New Challenges towards Equal Opportunities
2014
Abstract It is a fact that once passed the stage of compulsory education, the transition of a disabled child towards adult life and the world of employment is an increasing source of worry for parents. It is a process that terrifies parents and guidance is required as much for parents as for pupils to access useful employment or worthwhile activities and the adult world, besides personal autonomy and independence. This communication analyzes the different educational and occupational alternatives for disabled pupils. The employment of this group is recognized as key to enabling the disabled to participate fully in society and to achieve personal independence. It can also be the axis of an o…
What, where, when and how : Finnish children’s perceptions of learning in preschool
2021
To be able to support young children in learning to learn—an ability that requires adapting often-unprecedented changes in society—teachers need to be aware of the ways in which children understand learning. In this qualitative study, 177 micro-interviews conducted with 41 Finnish children were analysed using an abductive method to understand their perceptions of learning in a preschool. Learning was perceived as learning to do or know things. Academic skills and contents, followed by motoric skills and sports, arts and crafts, socio-emotional skills and everyday skills, were mentioned as the learning contents. In addition, intentional teaching, teacher-initiated exercises, practising, cogn…
Two Solutions to an Unsolvable Problem: Connecting Origami and GeoGebra in a Serbian High School
2014
Our “Visuality & Mathematics — Experiential Education of Mathematics Through the Use of Visual Art, Science, and Playful Activities” Tempus Project started in 2012 with the cooperation of eight European universities and scientific institutions, in order to develop Serbian mathematics education with technological equipment and interactive, experience-centered, and art-related content. The general objectives of this two-year-long project are justified by the findings of the PISA 2012 survey as well, which show that 15-year old Serbian students' mathematics performance is significantly below the OECD average. For the improvement of the Serbian students' mathematical literacy and abilities, wha…
Health science student teachers’ perceptions of teacher competence:a qualitative study
2020
Background. Health science teacher competence is multifaceted and continuously changing according to national and international healthcare standards. Organizational restructuring and emphasis on cost effectiveness is changing the scope of health science teachers' practical work and their role in healthcare (worldwide). Aim. This study aimed to describe student teachers' perceptions of the competencies needed to work as an educator in the healthcare field. Objective of study was to gain new knowledge which can be used in the development of teacher education programs in nursing science and to define a broader definition of the health science educators. Methods. A qualitative study was conduct…
Teachers’ Focus of Attention in First-grade Classrooms: Exploring Teachers Experiencing Less and More Stress Using Mobile Eye-tracking
2021
This study investigated teachers’ focus of attention and stress in first-grade classrooms. Teachers’ (n = 53) focus of attention was recorded in fall and spring with a mobile eye-tracking device, and the teachers reported stress via questionnaires. Correlation analysis was used to examine association between teacher stress (exhaustion, cynicism, and inadequacy) and focus of attention. Then, one teacher reporting more stress and one reporting less stress were selected for a case study to examine variations in their focus of attention. The results showed positive associations between teachers’ perceived inadequacy and overall focus of attention (whole eye-tracking recording) both in fall and …
The Nigerian Education and the Opportunities ahead for Mobile Learning
2018
: Information technology is providing opportunities to improve education and therefore, research is needed to identify what gaps exist and how these gaps can become opportunities for technology integration such as mobile learning. This paper suggests that successful integration of technology towards improving quality education should be driven by the existing challenges which are contextually peculiar for every country. The case of the Nigerian education was examined alongside practices and policies. The study used secondary data from Nigeria Education Data Survey (NEDS). This paper highlights three major problems that Nigeria faces in basic education, namely: large number of out of school …
The Critical Role of Morale in Ukraine’s Fight against the Russian Invasion
2020
The role of morale, also known as esprit de corps, in a high technology environment of the 21st century warfare, is poorly understood. The purpose of the study is to seek evidence for the proposition that the Ukraine’s population and military forces morale has neutralized the asymmetric difference in the military force of the two countries. The academic and practical implications have the potential to refocus military practice. An exploratory qualitative research method using theoretical sampling was used in this study. The study finds significant evidence for high morale as a balancing factor in the asymmetric differences of Russia and Ukraine, which explains Ukraine’s success against grea…
Calcium efflux from human erythrocyte ghosts
1970
The passive Ca efflux from human red cell ghosts was studied in media of differing ion compositions and compared to the ATP-dependent Ca efflux. Cells were loaded with(45)Ca during reversible hemolysis, and the loss of radioactivity into the non-radioactive incubation medium was measured, usually for 3 hr at 37°C. Analysis of the efflux curves revealed that(45)Ca efflux followed the kinetics of a simple two-compartment system. In the concentration range between 0 and 1MM Ca in the external solution ([Ca(++)] o ), the rate constant of passive Ca efflux (k min(-1), fraction of(45)Ca lost per minute into the medium) increased from 0.00732 to 0.0150 min(-1). There was no further increase at hig…
Towards a European public sphere? A Comparative Study of the Facebook Activities of Danish and Spanish Members of the European Parliament
2019
This comparative study examines the everyday Facebook activities of all Danish and Spanish members of the European Parliament (MEPs), and the extent to which there is a real political conversation between citizens and European representatives. Through content analysis, it analyzes the Facebook practices of a significantly under-studied population (MEPs) during a non-campaign period (January 15 to February 15, 2017) while most of recent research has overwhelmingly focused on campaign periods. The results show that both Danish and Spanish MEPs are generously present and active on Facebook, but that they are less popular than their national counterparts. The study shows that Danish MEPs use Fa…
Seed dormancy and germination of an endangered coastal plantEryngium maritimum(Apiaceae)
2013
INTRODUCTION Eryngium maritimum L. is a littoral species growing on sand dunes and shingle beaches. Although it is listed among the species widespread in western and southern Europe, overall its population is declining (Van der Maarel & Van der Maarel-Versluys, 1996). The species is included in the Red Data Book of Latvia (Fatare, 2003) and is protected in several other European countries. In northern Europe and in the Baltic Region it grows near the limits of its current area of distribution and therefore is at a greater risk of extinction because in small and isolated populations there is a risk of inbreeding depression. For example, in Eryngium alpinum partial self-incompatibility causes…
