Pre-service teachers and guided inquiry-based science teaching with simulations
2017
The aim of this dissertation was explore the beliefs and practices of pre-service primary teachers on using simulations as a part of guided inquiry-based lessons. Even though research has shown that using simulations to learn science offers certain learning benefits compared to other forms of instruction, their use in Finnish schools is still rare compared to the international average. Teacher training has the potential to promote the use of simulations in primary classrooms. Internationally, research has been called for the role of teachers in learning and teaching with simulations. As a part of this dissertation, an intervention was designed to accustom a group of pre-service teachers to …
Retinal Straylight Before and After Penetrating Keratoplasty in an Eye with a Post-Herpetic Corneal Scar
2008
Let Me Hack It: Teachers’ Perceptions About ‘Making’ in Education
2020
Making in education is an emergent practice focusing on learners as creators of things in a collaborative fashion while promoting knowledge construction through technology, design, and creative self-expression. Teachers’ (n=33) opinions about making were studied using an online questionnaire after they had attended an online course for professional development about making in education. The results suggest that there exists a group of educators who consider making as a promising approach in education and want to promote its use in schools. peerReviewed
Predicting response to interpersonal counselling (IPC) from case formulation : a systematic comparison between recovered and unchanged depressive cas…
2019
We sought to explore how the process between the counsellor and patient for arriving at a case formulation may predict the outcome of manualized interpersonal counselling (IPC) for depression in primary care. Qualitative content analysis and applied conversation analysis (CA) were used to achieve depth in the understanding of case formulation process among five patients who recovered and five who were unchanged according to quantitative post-treatment change rates derived from Clinical Outcomes in Routine Evaluation– Outcome Measure (CORE-OM). Interaction in the case formulations for the recovered group was generally characterized by a joint construction effort between the counsellor and th…
Pre-attentive change detection of emotional facial expressions : effects of depression and a short psychological intervention - and ERP study
2012
Tämän tutkimuksen tavoitteena oli tutkia aivojen esitietoista muutoksenhavaitsemiskykyä mittaamalla tapahtumasidonnaisia herätevastepotentiaaleja (ERP) elektroenkefalografiassa (EEG), käyttäen ärsyk-keenä emotionaalisia kasvonilmeitä. Tutkimuksessa verrattiin kahden ryhmän: masentuneiden sekä ei-masentuneiden - ERP vasteista. Lisäksi tutkimme psykologisen lyhyt intervention vaikutuksia koehen-kilöiden ERP vasteisiin. Tutkimuksessa käytettiin ärsykkeinä seitsemään universaalia kasvonilmettä, viidessä eri koeasetelmassa. Yhdessä koeasetelmassa kaikilla seitsemällä kasvonilmeelle oli yhtä suuri todennäköisyys esiintyä (p=0.14). Neljässä muussa koeasetelmassa käytettiin niin sanottua oddball pa…
Reflections on dialogicity : Challenges and suggestions by mathematics student teachers
2021
Research related to dialogic teaching has been gaining ground in recent decades. On a theoretical level, researchers have described how sociocultural approaches are linked to dialogic teaching. In addition, empirical studies have explained how dialogic teaching manifests itself in educational dialogue and classroom interactions. However, studies addressing how the dialogic theory and practice could be linked meaningfully in teacher education and professional development programs in subject teacher education and related praxis are still limited. Especially in the case of math teacher education, the reported professional development programs are limited in number. Whereas the tendency has bee…
Students' dialogic and justifying moves during dialogic argumentation in mathematics and physics
2022
In this study, we focus on dialogic argumentation among students in a whole class setting in mathematics and physics in lower secondary school. By drawing on previous studies on the structure of argumentation and dialogic interactions, we suggest that transparency of student reasoning and students' engagement with each other's ideas are two key aspects in dialogic argumentation. We examine what levels might exist in these key aspects and how they can exist simultaneously. We collected data by video recording mathematics and physics lessons in lower secondary school, and created a coding scheme for students' dialogic and justifying moves. By using the coding scheme, we recognized different k…
The Potentials of Tangible Technologies for Learning Linear Equations
2020
Tangible technologies provide interactive links between the physical and digital worlds, thereby merging the benefits of physical and virtual manipulatives. To explore the potentials of tangible technologies for learning linear equations, a tangible manipulative (TM) was designed and developed. A prototype of the initial TM was implemented and evaluated using mixed methods (i.e., classroom interventions, paper-based tests, thinking aloud sessions, questionnaires, and interviews) in real classroom settings. Six teachers, 24 primary school students, and 65 lower secondary school students participated in the exploratory study. The quantitative and qualitative analysis revealed that the initial…
Mathematics Learning through Arts and Collaborative Problem-Solving : The Princess and the Diamond-Problem
2016
In this paper, we examine a mathematics education course which focused on collaborative mathematical problem solving in art topics. The students of the course were Finnish primary school pre-service teachers. During the course students investigated tessellations, reflected on their experiences and designed workshops for pupils. The course meetings were video recorded. Students’ work contained elements of mathematical problem solving and gave them experiences of working collaboratively. The topic of tessellation was found suitable for this purpose. peerReviewed
Tilpasset opplæring for elever med dyskalkuli : en matematikklærer sin beskrivelse
2016
Masteroppgave matematikkdidaktikk – Universitetet i Agder 2016 The main topic of the thesis is how to adapt teaching to students with dyscalculia. In this thesis, the term dyscalculia is accounted for as one of several concepts for students who struggle particularly with mathematics. There is currently a lack of consensus among scientists about which concepts to be used for students with mathematics difficulties and what is meant by the different terms. In the thesis, there is therefore a separate chapter which presents an overview of the literatures use of concepts for students who have learning difficulties in mathematics. The thesis research questions consist of a main question and two s…
