The habitat monitoring under article 17 of the 92/43/eec Directive in Italy: the contribution of vegetation science
2016
The 4th National Report ex Art. 17 of the 92/43/EEC Directive in Italy (period 2013-2018) will try to fill a number of gaps still affecting the former versions of the Italian Reports, where territorial data were still missing for large parts of the country and the assessment was mostly based on the use of the expert opinion. Similar inconsistencies also emerged in other European countries (State of nature in the EU, EEA 2015). In order to reach this aim, a nationally shared protocol for monitoring the vegetation-based Annex I Habitats is currently under development. The most prominent issues addressed by the ongoing project are: i) fixing standardized, updated and scientifically grounded me…

The role of universities in knowledge production has changed. Although most higher learning still takes place in universities, knowledge is increasingly produced in collaborative networks comprising partners from different sectors (Välimaa, J., V. Papatsiba, and D. M. Hoffman. 2016. “Higher Education in Networked Knowledge Societies.” In Re-becoming Universities, The Changing Academy – The Changing Academic Profession in International Comparative Perspective. Vol. 15, edited by D. M. Hoffman and J. Välimaa, 13–39. Dordrecht: Springer). In addition, the focus of universities’ personnel policies has shifted from supporting professional inclusion and exclusion towards supporting the national d…
Minervan miehet : tieteellisen antikvariaatin kirjanvälitystoimintaa akateemisissa verkostoissa
2020

2015
Tämän tutkielman taustalla on työelämässä havaitut ongelmat tietokantojen rakenteiden ylläpitoon. Tavoitteena on löytää ratkaisumalli, joka mahdollisimman hyvin ratkaisisi havaitut ongelmat. Tietokannan rakennetta muokkaavien SQL–lauseiden järjestelmällinen tallentaminen version hallintaan näyttää ratkaisevan ongelmia, vaikkakin rinnakkaisen kehitystyön osalta kaikkia ongelmia ei saaturatkaistua. This study is based on problems acknowledged during development work of databases. Study tries to find solutions to these problems. It seems that storing database structure altering SQL batches into version controlling system will solve some of the problems. However parallel development of database…
Multidisciplinary Peer-Mentoring Groups Supporting Knowledge Sharing in Doctoral Education
2021
Obtaining a doctoral degree requires acquisition of different types of skills and knowledge. The aim of this article is to explore multidisciplinary peer-mentoring groups (PMGs) facilitated by senior academics as a knowledge sharing practice in doctoral education. Drawing from interviews with participants of PMGs at a Finnish university, we found that the participants perceived that cultures and practices of doctoral education in departments and faculties, as well as limited support from supervisors might hinder knowledge sharing. They highlighted that a flat hierarchy and confidential atmosphere supported by the multidisciplinary group composition promoted knowledge sharing and emotional s…

Assessing the conservation priority of freshwater lake sites based on taxonomic, functional and environmental uniqueness
2022
Aim We propose a novel approach that considers taxonomic uniqueness, functional uniqueness and environmental uniqueness and show how it can be used in guiding conservation planning. We illustrate the approach using data for lake biota and environment. Location Lake Puruvesi, Finland. Methods We sampled macrophytes and macroinvertebrates from the same 18 littoral sites. By adapting the original “ecological uniqueness” approach, we used distance-based methods to calculate measures of taxonomic (LCBD–t), functional (LCBD–f) and environmental (LCEH) uniqueness for each site. We also considered the numbers and locations of the sites needed to protect up to 70% of total variation in taxonomic, fu…
