"Valloittakaa meidät, tämä on elämänne tilaisuus!" : kriittinen media-analyysi Suomen huippumalli haussa -sarjasta
2011
A Hybrid Algorithm Based on WiFi for Robust and Effective Indoor Positioning
2019
Indoor positioning based on the Wireless Fidelity (WiFi) protocol and the Pedestrian Dead Reckoning (PDR) approach is widely exploited because of the existing WiFi infrastructure in buildings and the advancement of built-in smartphone sensors. In this work, a hybrid algorithm that combines WiFi fingerprinting and PDR to both exploit their advantages as well as limiting the impact of their disadvantages is proposed. Specifically, to build a probability map from noisy Received Signal Strength (RSS), a Gaussian Process (GP) regression is deployed to estimate and construct the RSS fingerprints with incomplete data. Mean and variance of generated points are used to estimate WiFi fingerprinting p…
Analysis of the Effect of Human Presence on a Wireless Sensor Network
2011
Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) are gaining an increasing industry wide adoption. However, there remain major challenges such as network dimensioning and node placement especially in Built Environment Networks (BENs). Decisions on the node placement, orientation, and the number of nodes to cover the area of interest are usually ad-hoc. Ray tracing tools are traditionally employed to predict RF signal propagation; however, such tools are primarily intended for outdoor environments. RF signal propagation varies greatly indoors due to building materials and infrastructure, obstacles, node placement, antenna orientation and human presence. Because of the complexity of signal prediction, these f…
Investigation of Multicomponent Sorption in Polymers from Fluid Mixtures at Supercritical Conditions: The Case of the Carbon Dioxide/Vinylidenefluor…
2008
The simultaneous sorption of carbon dioxide and vinylidene fluoride (VDF) in poly(vinylidenefluoride) from their supercritical (sc) mixtures was studied using an experimental method, already described in a previous publication, based on the gas-chromatographic determination of the equilibrium composition of the fluid phase in contact with the polymer. Argon was added to the system as a nonabsorbable molecular probe in the polymer to take into account the effect of the volume swelling on the measurement. Sorption behavior has been studied at 50 °C by changing the composition and the density of the supercritical phase. We have found that VDF dissolves in its polymer with concentrations much l…
Ajan henki lain kirjaimessa : suomalaisten lastensuojelulakien ja -asetusten ideologiat
2019
The Spirit of Time in the Letter of the Law. The Ideologies of Finnish Child Welfare Legislation analyses what kinds of ideologies are construed in child welfare legislation and how. It is based on a critical discourse analysis in the fields the work is situated in: language studies and social sciences. The results are applicable in the drafting and interpretation of language for professional use. In the First Child Welfare Act and Decree (1936), ideology is construed as an educational ideology in which the authorities are guided in, and largely required to take particular institutional and educational measures for child welfare when specified conditions are met. Children, young people, par…
A methodological approach to exploring the rhythm of classroom discourse in a cumulative frame in science teaching
2014
The purpose of this study was to characterise the nature and purpose of different types of classroom discourse and to explore how the rhythm of classroom discourse provides a cumulative frame for the teaching of science. The overall data consisted of a teaching sequence of eight lessons on the moment of force as taught to physiotherapy students at a Finnish University of Applied Sciences. Our in-depth multiple timescale analysis of two episodes illustrated in this study shows examples how cumulation was instantiated by the different types of classroom discourse. The methodology and findings of this study have implications both for teacher education and further research. peerReviewed
Discursive Strategies to Negotiate Power Relations in Disability Services Client Juries
2020
Collaboration with clients is an efficient way to develop social services. To strengthen the possibilities for clients to influence services, client juries are established. However, collaboration in the juries is perceived as difficult because of the power imbalance inherent in the client–social worker relationship. The aim of this study was to examine how the participants negotiated power relations in client jury meetings. The data consisted of four observed disability services client jury meetings. Analysis was performed using action-implicative discourse analysis, which aims to define different communicative problems, interactional strategies, and situated ideals of communicative practic…
Heteroglossic and multimodal resources in use : participation across spaces of identification in a Christian lifestyle sports community
2017
This dissertation examines how members of one particular youth community, Christian lifestyle sports enthusiasts in Finland, use language and other semiotic resources to construct participation in their community of practice (CoP). The CoP is organized around the late-modern activity culture of lifestyle sports. The participants also share the Christian faith and in their snowboarding camps organize Bible study sessions and engage in prayer and worship. The theoretical and methodological framework incorporates sociolinguistics, social semiotics, discourse studies and connective ethnography, including the exploration of both the digital and physical spaces of the community. The dissertation …
Business schools’ competitive strategies : whose goals, which aims?
2019
Purpose This study reviews the literature on business-school (b-school) competition and competitiveness to extend our understanding of b-schools’ competitive strategies. Design/methodology/approach Both content and network analysis were used in the examination of the scholarly discourse. Findings The analyses distinguish three literature streams. The first concentrates on resources, capabilities and competencies; the second focuses on measures of competitiveness; and the third includes competitive dynamics and strategy discourse. The analysis shows that the conceptions of competitiveness are quite coherent concerning resources, capabilities and competencies. However, in the “measures of com…
