Temporal association between the influenza virus and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV): RSV as a predictor of seasonal influenza.
2016
SUMMARYEpidemiologists agree that there is a prevailing seasonality in the presentation of epidemic waves of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infections and influenza. The aim of this study is to quantify the potential relationship between the activity of RSV, with respect to the influenza virus, in order to use the RSV seasonal curve as a predictor of the evolution of an influenza virus epidemic wave. Two statistical tools, logistic regression and time series, are used for predicting the evolution of influenza. Both logistic models and time series of influenza consider RSV information from previous weeks. Data consist of influenza and confirmed RSV cases reported in Comunitat Valenciana (…
Jaunu alkilaizvietotu 4-fenil-2-pirolidonu sintēze un ķīmisko īpašību izpēte
2016
Jaunu alkilaizvietotu 4-fenil-2-pirolidonu sintēze un ķīmisko īpašību izpēte. Baškevičs V., darba vadītāji: Dr.chem. Maksims Vorona, asoc. prof. Anda Prikšāne. Bakalaura darbs. 32 lappuses, 18 attēli, 18 literatūras avoti. Latviešu valodā. Izstrādātas jaunas 5-alkilaizvietoto 4-fenil-2-pirolidonus iegūšanas metodes, izmantojot malonātu vai 2-fluormalonāta esteru Mihaela pievienošanu -alkil--nitrostirolam, kā arī nitroalkānu pievienošanu kanēļskābes metilesterim. Iegūtie starpprodukti tika hidrogenēti paaugstinātā spiedienā Reneja niķeļa katalizatora klātbūtnē, veidojot 5-alkil-4-fenil-3-karboksi-2-pirolidonu un 5-metil-4-fenil-3-fluoro-3-karboksi-2-pirolidona esterus, vai 5-alkil-4-fenil-…
N-acetyl-L-cysteine (NAC) inhibit mucin synthesis and pro-inflammatory mediators in alveolar type II epithelial cells infected with influenza virus A…
2011
64% of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) exacerbations are caused by respiratory infections including influenza (strains A and B) and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). They affect the airway epithelium increasing inflammatory and apoptosis events through mechanisms involving ROS generation, and induce the release of mucins from epithelial cells that are involved in the deterioration of the patient's health during the course of the disease. The antioxidant NAC has proved useful in the management of COPD reducing symptoms, exacerbations and accelerated lung function decline. It has been shown to inhibit influenza virus replication and to diminish the release of inflammatory and ap…
Cost analysis of a vaccination strategy for respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) in a network model
2010
[EN] In this paper an age-structured mathematical model for respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is proposed where children younger than one year old, who are the most affected by this illness, are specially considered. Real data of hospitalized children in the Spanish region of Valencia are used in order to determine some seasonal parameters of the model. Once the parameters are determined, we propose a complete stochastic network model to study the seasonal evolution of the respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) epidemics. In this model every susceptible individual can acquire the disease after a random encounter with any infected individual in the social network. The edges of a complete graph co…
Evaluation of a multiplex reverse transcriptase PCR ELISA for the detection of nine respiratory tract pathogens.
2003
A multiplex reverse transcription (RT) polymerase chain reaction combined with a microwell hybridization assay (m-RT-PCR-ELISA) was previously developed to detect nine different microorganisms: enterovirus (EV), influenza virus type A (IVA) and type B (IVB), respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), parainfluenzavirus type 1 (PIV1) and type 3 (PIV3), adenovirus (AV), Mycoplasma pneumoniae (Mpn), Chlamydia pneumoniae (Cpn) in a single test. These organisms do not usually colonize the respiratory tract of humans, but, if present, it may be assumed they are involved in respiratory disease. The m-RT-PCR-ELISA was tested on (i) culture supernatants of unknown contents, (ii) by determining the analytical…
Latvijas evaņģēliskā kristiešu draudze “Kristus Pasaulei”
2020

Respiratory syncytial virus infection in a Sicilian pediatric population: Risk factors, epidemiology, and severity
2008
Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is the leading cause of hospitalization for lower respiratory tract infections (LRTIs) in young children worldwide. This study evaluated the epidemiological and clinical patterns of RSV infection in infants hospitalized for LRTIs in Sicily. Over a 7-month period (October 1, 2005 to April 30, 2006), all children 6 months old, with a gestational age (GA) of >36 weeks, with a birth weight of >2.50 g, with previous hospitalizations due to LRTI, with smokers in the household, and with a history of breast-feeding (p < 0.05 for each). RSV infection was associated with a higher likelihood to be admitted to neonatal intensive care units and to longer hospitalization…
Transgenic expression and activation of PGC-1α protect dopaminergic neurons in the MPTP mouse model of Parkinson’s disease
2011
Mitochondrial dysfunction and oxidative stress occur in Parkinson’s disease (PD), but little is known about the molecular mechanisms controlling these events. Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-gamma coactivator-1α (PGC-1α) is a transcriptional coactivator that is a master regulator of oxidative stress and mitochondrial metabolism. We show here that transgenic mice overexpressing PGC-1α in dopaminergic neurons are resistant against cell degeneration induced by the neurotoxin MPTP. The increase in neuronal viability was accompanied by elevated levels of mitochondrial antioxidants SOD2 and Trx2 in the substantia nigra of transgenic mice. PGC-1α overexpression also protected against MP…
Involvement of estrogen receptors in the resveratrol-mediated increase in dopamine transporter in human dopaminergic neurons and in striatum of femal…
2011
Treatment with resveratrol (RSV) has been shown to protect vulnerable neurons after various brain injuries and in neurodegenerative diseases. The mechanisms for the effects of RSV in brain are not fully understood, but RSV may affect the expression of various gene products. RSV is structurally related to the synthetic estrogen, diethylstilbestrol so the effects of RSV may be gender-specific. Here we studied the role of RSV in the regulation of dopamine transporter (DAT) in the striatum using male and female mice. The basic levels of DAT in the striatum showed no sex difference, but the levels increased significantly by RSV (20 mg/kg i.p.) in female but not in male mice. Pretreatment of mice…
